The moon hovered low over the Ember wild Forest, casting a soft silver glow over the tops of ancient trees. The cool breeze rustled the leaves like whispers in the night. Eva stood alone on the balcony of the small fae lodge Kyle had brought her to. Her fingers curled around the railing as she stared into the darkness beyond the treeline.
She could feel the change in the air.
It wasn’t just the wind. It was deeper—like something had shifted beneath her skin. Her dreams had grown stranger since their kiss. The warmth between her and Kyle no longer felt like a simple emotion. It burned, wild and unfamiliar. Every time he touched her, something stirred inside her chest—something powerful, something alive.
Kyle hadn’t spoken about it much. He tried to act like everything was normal. But Eva could see the tension in his shoulders, the way he stared at the fire longer than he used to, as though searching for answers in the flickering light.
Tonight, she couldn’t sleep. Not with so many questions in her heart.
She heard footsteps behind her and turned to find Kyle approaching, a blanket draped over his shoulder. His golden hair was messy from sleep, and his eyes were soft with concern.
“You’re cold,” he said, wrapping the blanket around her shoulders.
“I couldn’t sleep,” Eva replied, offering a faint smile. “Too many thoughts.”
“About us?” he asked, leaning against the railing beside her.
She hesitated before nodding. “You’ve changed since we came back from the mountain. And so have I.”
Kyle looked out at the trees. “I know.”
He paused, then added, “It’s the bond.”
Eva looked at him sharply. “What do you mean?”
“The fire in my blood recognizes you. I didn’t understand it at first. But I do now. We’ve been bound, Eva. Not just by magic—but by something older, deeper. You saved my life. You reached into the flame and pulled me out. That leaves a mark.”
She took a step closer. “So it’s real? What I feel—it’s not just me?”
Kyle turned to face her fully. “No, it’s not just you. I feel it too. Every moment I’m near you, it’s like something inside me hums. Like your soul is calling to mine.”
Eva’s heart skipped a beat. “And what does it mean?”
He reached up and brushed a strand of hair from her face. “It means we’re connected now. More than lovers. More than allies. It’s something sacred in the old fae lore—a soulfire bond. Few believed it still existed.”
Eva searched his face. “But I’m not fae. I’m just… human.”
“You’re not just anything,” he said fiercely. “And the bond chose you anyway. That’s what makes it powerful. That’s what makes it dangerous.”
Eva frowned. “Dangerous?”
Kyle looked away. “There are some in my court who will see our bond as a threat. The Council has long feared outsiders gaining power over the royal bloodline. And you… you’ve already changed me.”
“I didn’t mean to,” she said quietly.
“I’m glad you did,” he replied, his voice soft. “But they won’t be.”
They stood there for a long time in silence, the night pressing in around them.
Finally, Eva asked, “So what happens next?”
Kyle’s expression darkened. “The Council is watching. And soon, my mother—the Queen—will call me back to the Ember Court. When she finds out about our bond, she’ll demand answers.”
Eva swallowed hard. “Will she try to break it?”
He nodded slowly. “If she can. But I won’t let her.”
“Kyle…” she began, but he turned and gently placed his hand over her heart.
“This beats for both of us now. No matter what they say, no matter what they do—I won’t give you up.”
Tears welled in Eva’s eyes. “Promise me.”
“I swear it,” he said. “By flame and fate.”
The next morning, Eva woke to the sound of wings beating against the sky. She rushed to the window and saw a large firehawk circling above the lodge. A scroll, sealed with the royal crest, dangled from its talons.
Kyle stepped onto the balcony beside her, catching the hawk’s message with a gloved hand.
He broke the seal and read silently, jaw tightening.
“She knows,” he said.
Eva’s stomach turned. “Your mother?”
“She’s summoned me to court. Tonight.”
“And me?”
Kyle hesitated. “She didn’t mention you. Which means I’ll have to fight to bring you.”
Eva grabbed his arm. “I’m not letting you walk into that alone.”
“She’ll try to use your presence against us.”
“Then let her try,” Eva said firmly. “I’m stronger than they think.”
He looked at her with admiration. “You are.”
They left the lodge that afternoon, riding a glowing path of ember light back toward the heart of the Ember Court. As they traveled, the air grew warmer, the trees taller, and the presence of magic stronger.
By the time they reached the golden gates of the palace, the sun had begun to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the land.
Fae guards stepped forward, weapons drawn. Their eyes flicked to Eva, full of suspicion.
“She is with me,” Kyle said sharply.
The guards hesitated, then stepped aside.
The palace hadn’t changed—it was still a towering marvel of flame glass and living stone—but to Eva, it felt colder now. Like it was watching her, judging her.
Inside the throne room, dozens of nobles had gathered, dressed in robes of red, gold, and black. They turned as Kyle entered, their gazes falling on Eva like arrows.
On the throne sat Queen Elenya, radiant and terrifying in her fire-gold gown. Her eyes, sharp and ancient, landed on Eva first.
“You return with the mortal,” she said, her voice cool.
Kyle stepped forward. “I return with my bondmate.”
Gasps echoed around the hall. The Queen’s jaw tightened.
“You speak of an old myth,” she said. “A soulfire bond has not been witnessed in over five hundred years.”
“I felt the fire,” Kyle replied. “She felt it too.”
Eva took a breath and stepped beside him. “It’s real. We didn’t choose it. But we won’t deny it.”
Queen Elenya’s gaze was unreadable. “And if I tell you that such a bond is forbidden?”
“Then I would ask,” Kyle said carefully, “why the flame chose her at all.”
Silence fell.
At last, the Queen turned to her Council. “Bring the Seer. Let the truth be seen.”
An hour later, in a private chamber lit by sacred fire, Eva sat before the Seer—a blind fae woman with silver hair and glowing eyes. Kyle stood behind her, tense.
The Seer touched Eva’s forehead gently, her voice a whisper. “Show me what lies beneath.”
A warm pulse spread through Eva’s body, followed by visions—her childhood, her mother’s songs, the first time she healed a wounded bird, the first time she touched Kyle’s face.
Then the Seer gasped.
“She carries it,” the Seer said. “The flame lives in her now. And it is ancient. Older than even our Queen.”
Queen Elenya’s face went pale.
“Then the bond is true,” the Seer finished.
Elenya stood slowly. “Then it must be protected. But also… watched.”
Eva’s stomach twisted. She had passed the test—but not without cost.
Kyle took her hand as they left the chamber. “We survived the first step.”
She nodded, trying to stay strong.
But in her heart, she knew the hardest part was still ahead.
