Chapter Five: Trial by Flame

1138 Words
The morning sky was thick with ash-colored clouds. Light peeked through in pale streaks, but the sun didn’t shine the way it did in the human world. At the Ash Citadel, even morning felt like night. Drums pounded in the distance—slow, heavy beats that echoed across the stone walls. It was the sound of tradition. Of judgment. Today was the Rite of Ember. And Kyle was the one being judged. He stood inside the Flame Ring, an ancient circle carved deep into the center of the Citadel. Flames danced along the outer rim, rising and falling like the breath of some great beast. The stones beneath his feet were warm, and the air shimmered with heat. Fae from every corner of the kingdom filled the viewing balconies. Their eyes burned with curiosity, anger, and fear. Some whispered his name as if it were poison. Others watched in silence. But Kyle didn’t look at them. He stood tall, his dark hair pulled back, his armor clean but simple. The only thing he wore of power was the fire-shaped pendant Eva had returned to him. He didn’t wear it for show. He wore it for strength. Up on the high dais, seated in thrones made of obsidian and fire, the council watched. At the center was Rhyen—Kyle’s older brother, now acting prince. Rhyen’s face was calm, almost bored, but his silver eyes were sharp. Cold. “Kyle of House Ashbane,” Rhyen said loudly, so everyone could hear. “You are accused of breaking our most sacred law. You freed a cursed fire spirit. You left your post. You walked among mortals. You may have even consorted with dark magic.” A ripple of gasps moved through the crowd. Kyle didn’t flinch. “You’ve requested the Rite of Ember,” Rhyen continued. “A trial of memory. Of truth. If you lie, the flames will mark you. If you speak truth, the fire will reveal it.” “I do not fear truth,” Kyle said clearly. “Let the fire test me.” A cloaked Seer stepped forward. Her eyes were hidden, but power radiated from her like smoke. She carried the Ember Chalice—a metal cup glowing with orange light. “This will show your memories,” she said softly. “You cannot choose which ones. The flame sees all.” Kyle took the chalice in both hands. It was hot—so hot it burned his palms. He closed his eyes and thought of Eva. Her green eyes. Her voice in the dark. Her kindness, even when he’d tried to push her away. He drank. The potion was fire and smoke. It slid down his throat like lava. His knees buckled. And then—everything changed. First Memory: A Promise of Mercy A boy, no older than seven, ran through a garden filled with glowing flowers. Moonblooms and fire roses filled the air with light. His mother, Queen Eloria, stood nearby. She knelt down and placed a small crown of fireflies on his head. “Kyle,” she said gently. “One day, people will ask you to turn away from pain. To ignore those who burn. Promise me, you won’t.” The young boy nodded. “I promise, Mother.” The vision faded. Kyle’s arms lit up with flame. The fire didn’t hurt—it warmed him, like a blanket around his soul. The Seer’s voice echoed: “Truth. This was his beginning. He learned to protect the broken.” Second Memory: The Disobedience Now older, Kyle stood before a cage made of crystal and ice. Inside was a fire spirit, barely alive, its eyes glowing with fear. It whispered, “Help me.” Behind him, guards shouted for him to stop. The council’s orders were clear: the spirit must be destroyed. But Kyle raised his blade. He cut through the chains. The spirit screamed, then flew free, rising into the sky like a shooting star. Suddenly, Kyle’s legs trembled. Fire wrapped around his chest. He groaned in pain, collapsing. The Seer said, “Truth. He disobeyed. But his choice was compassion, not cruelty.” Third Memory: A Secret Meeting Darkness. Rain. A figure in a hood stood with Kyle beneath a twisted tree. “You think your exile was about that fire spirit?” the figure hissed. “No. Your brother saw the light in you. He feared it. You were never meant to rule.” A knife flashed. Blood fell. The vision faded. Kyle gasped. His skin burned along his ribs, deep and angry. The Seer said, “Truth. He was not exiled for justice. He was exiled to silence him.” The crowd erupted into shocked whispers. Some stood. Others sat frozen. Rhyen’s jaw tightened. His hands curled around the arms of his throne. Fourth Vision: A Future Not Yet Written Eva stood in a glowing room. Her dress was made of white flame, her eyes filled with sadness. She reached out to him. “You must choose,” she whispered. “Your crown… or me. If you rise, I fall.” Smoke swirled between them. Kyle tried to grab her hand, but she slipped through his fingers like mist. Then darkness. Kyle collapsed to the ground. The Ember Chalice rolled from his hand. His body was shaking, his skin marked with burns, but he was alive. The Seer stepped forward. “He told no lies,” she announced. “Every memory was true.” Gasps filled the courtyard. Some fae looked at each other with wide eyes. Others turned toward Rhyen. The acting prince said nothing. His face was pale, his mouth a tight line. Later that night, the Citadel was filled with whispers. The fire in the halls burned lower. Nobles spoke quietly behind closed doors. Some began to wonder if Kyle should be brought back into power. Others feared what his return would mean. The council was divided. But Kyle… Kyle was resting. He lay in a quiet chamber, surrounded by old flame wards and healing runes. His burns would heal. But something else had awakened inside him—something deeper. Something older. Far away, Eva sat beside the Moonwell in the forest. The pendant Kyle had given her now glowed faintly in her hands. She held it close to her heart. The Seer had visited her again—this time in a dream. “The fire has spoken,” the Seer had said. “He passed the trial. But his real test has only begun.” Eva didn’t know what that meant. But she could feel it in her bones. Something was coming. Something big. She placed the pendant over her neck and whispered into the wind, “Kyle… I hope you’re safe.” And far away, in his dreams, Kyle heard her voice.
