Chapter Seventy One: Deep Layers

464 Words
Mila’s POV The safe house was silent except for the soft hum of the terminal. Lines of code scrolled endlessly across the screen, a digital labyrinth holding secrets she had only begun to understand. Xavier leaned close, fingers poised over the keyboard. “If we’re lucky, Eden’s firewall hasn’t been updated since the lab collapse,” he said, voice low, eyes sharp. Mila nodded, forcing herself to focus. The residual echo of the clone still lingered — a soft whisper at the edge of her mind, occasionally flaring with fragments of knowledge. She ignored it, grounding herself in the present. “Look,” Xavier said, pointing to a folder deep in the network hierarchy. It was labeled simply: LAYER 03 – SUBJECTS & PROGRESS. Her stomach twisted. “More… clones?” He hesitated. “Possibly. Or… experiments. They’ve cataloged everything — identities, skills, neural compatibility… even behavioral responses.” Mila swallowed hard. Clicking through the files, she gasped. Hundreds of entries — some familiar, some not. Names she recognized, faces she didn’t. And then she froze. > SUBJECT 12: Status ACTIVE – Neural Sync: Full SUBJECT 17: Status ACTIVE – Neural Sync: Partial Her pulse raced. She scrolled faster. Each file detailed a life meticulously monitored, manipulated, and sometimes erased. The thought that she had been only one among many — part of something far larger — made her chest tighten. Suddenly, a folder titled PROJECT EDEN – LEADERSHIP & CONTROL appeared. Her eyes widened. “Xavier… look at this.” He leaned closer, brow furrowed. “This… this names people I know. People I trusted.” Mila felt a chill crawl down her spine. Friends, colleagues, even allies in the corporate world — somehow, Eden had infiltrated everything. And her own father’s files were among them. > They weren’t just watching me… she whispered. They were planning. They were controlling. And we never knew. Xavier’s fingers flew over the keys, pulling deeper logs, tracing connections between the labs, the clones, and the shadowed leaders of Eden. “This is bigger than Mnemosyne,” he said quietly. “Much bigger. And far more dangerous.” Mila’s jaw tightened. “Then we uncover it all. Every secret. Every subject. Every file.” A warning flashed across the screen: SECURITY BREACH DETECTED – INTRUDER IN NETWORK. Xavier’s eyes widened. “They know we’re in. They’re tracing us. Fast.” Mila exhaled, eyes blazing with determination. “Then we don’t stop. Not now. Not ever. We’re closer than we’ve ever been.” And as the network pulsed around them, alive with encrypted secrets and hidden eyes, Mila felt the full weight of Eden pressing in — but she also felt power. Knowledge was their weapon. And for the first time, she and Xavier were ready to strike.
