Chapter Seventy Three: Safe Haven

459 Words
Mila’s POV The service tunnel stretched endlessly beneath the city, damp and echoing with the sound of their footsteps. Water dripped from the ceiling, splashing onto the concrete floor, mixing with the metallic tang of blood and sweat. Xavier led the way, flashlight cutting through the darkness, eyes scanning every corner. Mila followed, breathing heavy but steady, her senses sharpened from the neural merge and the adrenaline of the fight. > We’re not safe yet, she reminded herself. Behind them, Eden’s operatives would regroup, sending reinforcements. Their safe house had been destroyed, their location compromised. But for now, the tunnel was theirs — a fragile, temporary sanctuary. “Do you think… they’ll stop?” Mila asked quietly, voice bouncing off the concrete walls. Xavier shook his head. “No. Eden doesn’t stop. They adapt. They plan. And they never forget.” She glanced at him, eyes fierce. “Then we have to be faster. Smarter.” The tunnel opened into an old maintenance room — dust-covered, abandoned. Xavier pulled a panel from the wall, revealing a hidden passage lined with emergency supplies, weapons, and communications equipment. > Who set this up? Mila thought, suspicion flickering. “Someone knew we’d need a place like this,” Xavier muttered, scanning the room. “Safe, secure, and out of Eden’s immediate reach. But not permanent. We can’t linger here long.” Mila nodded, setting down the terminal. Her mind raced through the files, the names, the hidden layers of Project Eden. One detail nagged at her: a subdirectory labeled LAYER 07 – FUTURE OPERATIVES / SUBJECT STATUS: CLASSIFIED. > They’re still creating more, she whispered under her breath. Xavier glanced at her, reading the thought in her eyes. “And you think they might already have another… copy?” Her jaw tightened. “Not just one. Maybe several. Mnemosyne was just the beginning. Eden isn’t done experimenting. Not with me… not with anyone who might resist.” He frowned. “Then we prepare. Find the others, expose Eden, and cut their network from the inside out.” Mila took a deep breath, grounding herself. The clone’s echo was faint now, retreating, but its presence reminded her of what she had survived. > If Eden thinks they can control me, they’re wrong. She turned to Xavier, eyes blazing. “We start with Eden’s network, layer by layer. And we finish it — before they finish us.” Xavier nodded, a wry, determined smile forming. “Then let’s not waste time.” The tunnel was dark, but the safe haven provided a fragile light — a chance to regroup, plan, and strike back. Outside, Eden’s shadow lingered, watching, waiting. Inside, Mila and Xavier were ready. > This time, they wouldn’t get a second chance.
