Chapter Seventy Four: The Puppets Master

446 Words
Xavier’s POV The safe haven was quiet, but the tension in the room was suffocating. Monitors hummed softly, casting pale blue light across the walls. Every second mattered — Eden’s network was alive, adaptive, and watching. “Layer by layer,” Mila muttered, her fingers flying over the terminal. “We start from the bottom and work up. Every node, every connection, every file.” I leaned over, scanning the incoming data streams. “We need to know who’s actually pulling the strings,” I said. “Mnemosyne, the clones, the operatives — they’re all pieces. But who’s holding the board?” Mila’s eyes widened as she pulled up a directory labeled EXECUTIVE OVERSIGHT – PROJECT EDEN. Files opened, revealing encrypted communications, financial transfers, and even personal logs. Names we’d never expected appeared — influential scientists, corporate leaders, and… familiar faces. She froze. “Xavier… this one… it’s my father’s signature. And it’s tied directly to Eden’s funding and operations.” I felt the air thicken. “You’re saying your father…?” Mila shook her head, disbelief etched across her features. “I don’t know. Maybe he doesn’t even know. But the digital footprint is there. Everything we’ve fought… every experiment… he’s linked to it.” Her voice dropped, almost a whisper. “He’s either a puppet master… or he’s being used as one.” The screen flickered, and a new alert popped up: SECURITY BREACH DETECTED – TRACE INITIATED. Eden was already aware of their intrusion. I clenched my fists. “They’re onto us. That’s too fast. Someone must be inside the system.” Mila’s fingers hesitated above the keyboard. “No. This isn’t just about stopping the operatives anymore. We need to know the real leadership. Who’s controlling everything. Because until we do… Eden’s network will always be one step ahead.” I leaned back, eyes narrowing. “Then we expose them. Every last one.” Mila’s jaw set, determination blazing. “And if my father is part of it?” I reached for her hand, steadying her. “Then we bring him back. Or stop him. Whatever it takes.” A long silence fell between us. The gravity of what we’d discovered weighed heavily — Eden wasn’t just experiments or clones. It was an entire network of influence, manipulation, and power, and someone close to Mila was tangled in it. But one thing was clear: > We weren’t just fighting for survival anymore. We were fighting to uncover the truth. The monitors hummed again, waiting, watching, as if the network itself sensed the coming storm. Mila leaned in, eyes fierce. “Then let’s find the real puppet masters… and pull their strings.”
