7 THE NEIGHBORHOOD The area that Woodstock grew up in was a safe middle-class neighborhood, like most in Werchet. None of Woodstock’s work friends occupied his block, although they would visit. His best friend Smitty lived across the street. Before they got their drivers’ permits, they used to wander the streets all night. Woodstock and Smitty did their share of mischief, but nothing too bad. They rang people’s doorbells and ran, made prank calls on the phone, and toilet-papered yards. A female classmate of theirs they didn’t much care for was one of their victims. One Saturday evening, with the breeze blowing from the west, Woodstock and Smitty snuck into her yard under the moonlight.
