Mia Sullivan happily picked up the bouquet and held it out for Damian to see.
Her eyes were full of anticipation as she asked, "Damian, look. Aren't these your favorite?"
Damian lightly brushed a finger over one of the stems.
Then he lowered his head and smelled the flowers.
"The scent is really faint. I can barely smell anything. They don't seem that nice anymore."
He deliberately drew out his words, smiling as he teased Mia.
Mia didn't believe him.
She immediately lowered her head and leaned closer to smell the bouquet.
"They smell great! You're lying to me again!"
She didn't notice that while she was smelling the flowers, Damian had been looking at me the entire time.
The next second, the wind chime at the entrance suddenly rang with a crisp sound.
"Damian! Happy birthday!"
Several men walked in, laughing.
But the instant they saw me, the smiles on their faces froze.
Their eyes followed me as I moved.
Every one of them looked wary.
Then they all turned to Ryan, as if asking him what exactly was going on.
I walked over with the lemonade I had prepared earlier.
To my surprise, the moment I approached, several of them raised their hands at the same time as if to shield themselves.
The way they reacted made it seem as though they were afraid I was bringing them sulfuric acid instead of lemonade.
Back when Damian and I were constantly taking revenge on each other, I had admittedly played a few tricks on them too.
But as far as I was concerned, those had all been minor things.
I hadn't expected that even after so many years, their bodies would still instinctively tense up whenever I came near.
One of them secretly shot Ryan a look and asked under his breath, "What the hell is going on?"
Ryan shrugged without answering.
I set down the lemonade.
"Enjoy."
With that, I turned to leave.
But Mia suddenly tugged at the hem of my clothes.
"Could you take a picture for us?"
"No."
I gently removed her hand and refused outright.
I was just about to walk away when a figure suddenly stepped in front of me.
I looked up.
Damian was standing there.
His expression had darkened.
"What? You don't think we've spent enough money here today? Name your price. How much would it take to buy you..."
He deliberately paused there.
It was as though he were waiting for me to get angry.
But when he saw that I barely reacted, he coldly finished, "...to take a picture for us."
I merely gave him an indifferent glance.
I didn't answer.
Then I tried to walk around him.
The next second, Damian suddenly kicked me in the shin.
The sharp pain sent me crashing straight to the floor.
Immediately afterward, a black-and-gold card struck me across the face.
The edge of the card scraped over my skin, leaving a bloody cut on my cheek.
Damian looked down at me.
"There's enough money on that card to buy your life."
I endured the pain and got back to my feet.
Then I stared hard at Damian.
Mia hurried over with a smile and stepped between us, trying to ease the tension.
"Damian, don't be like that..."
Then she turned to me.
"I'm sorry, ma'am. My fiancé might be drunk."
But there was no smell of alcohol on Damian at all.
He wasn't drunk.
He simply wanted to make trouble for me.
Just like he had for those ten years in the past.
Maybe life in New York had been too easy for him these past few years.
So easy that he had forgotten what kind of person I used to be.
If anyone hurt me, I always made sure to retaliate.
I crouched down and picked up the black-and-gold card from the floor.
Then I walked back over to Damian.
Someone nearby immediately laughed.
"Damian, this woman hasn't changed at all. The second money's involved, she does exactly what she's told."
Damian looked noticeably more pleased when he heard that.
With complete confidence, he held his phone out to me.
He probably really thought I had become obedient now.
I didn't take the phone.
The next second, I reached out and grabbed Damian by the chin.
Then I picked up a thorny flower stem from beside me and shoved it straight toward his mouth.
I didn't stop until I smelled blood.
Then I picked up two drinks from the table and poured them straight into his mouth.
"Your mouth is filthy. I don't mind washing it out for you."
After saying that, I lifted my foot and kicked the man who had mocked me.
"i***t. When it's not your turn to speak, keep your mouth shut."
Everything happened too quickly.
No one around us had time to react.
For a moment, the only sound in the flower shop was the rain outside.
Ryan leaned against a corner and sighed helplessly.
"Why did you have to provoke her?"
Only then did Mia finally react.
She clenched her fists and stormed over to me.
"Even if we were the ones who were wrong just now, you didn't have to go that far!"
She grew angrier with every word.
Then she raised her hand to slap me.
"Ah!"
But before her hand could come down, I had already grabbed her wrist.
The next second, I slapped her across the face.
The sharp c***k echoed through the entire flower shop.
Mia immediately screamed.
Damian spat the blood from his mouth.
The smile on his face vanished completely.
"You can come after me, and I can let it go. But you dared to hurt my fiancée. Looks like you really don't want to live."
With that, he pulled Mia, whose face was already red and swollen, into his arms.
Then he asked her quietly, "Want me to smash this place up for you?"
Mia covered her face.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
In the end, she nodded.
Almost the very next second, several bodyguards dressed in black rushed in through the door.
They began smashing the shop with clubs.
Flowerpots shattered one after another.
The hanging lights were smashed as well.
Before long, the floor was covered in soil, glass, and all kinds of debris.
Cold wind and rain kept blowing in through the broken openings.
Rainwater splashed across my face.
Damian walked over to me.
He reached out, grabbed my chin, and forced me to look up at him.
"This wasn't your fault to begin with. But no one gets to hurt her. Write down whatever compensation you want and send it to me. No matter how much it is, I'll pay."
I forcefully knocked his hand away.
The next second, I suddenly started coughing violently.
I couldn't spare any attention for Damian.
I immediately crouched down and frantically searched through the wreckage scattered across the floor.
After searching for a long time, I finally spotted the white medicine bottle.
My eyes immediately lit up.
But the next second, Damian kicked the bottle away.
The cap popped off.
All the pills inside rolled into the muddy water.
Damian took another two steps forward.
The sole of his shoe came down directly on the pills.
Several of them were crushed instantly.
He looked down at me and sneered.
"Pretending to be sick for sympathy? You were already using that trick ten years ago."
With that, he wrapped an arm around Mia and turned to leave.
All I could do was kneel in the freezing muddy water.
I kept searching through it with my hands for the pills that had already been crushed.
In the end, I managed to find only a few relatively intact fragments.
I shoved them into my mouth.
Without even any water, I swallowed them down.
The medicine didn't just help stabilize my emotions.
More importantly, it eased the pain.
When my illness first began, I only needed half a pill.
But now, even ten pills at once could barely suppress the pain completely.
I was almost out of medicine.
And my life was probably almost over too.
