Chapter 4

After taking the medicine, I crouched alone in the most inconspicuous corner of the hospital corridor. I dug my fingers hard into my arm. Even after I broke the skin and blood began to seep out, I didn't stop right away. It was a method I had come up with myself. Pinching my arm hurt, of course. But that pain was far less intense than the agony caused by my illness, the kind that seemed to cut deep into my body. At least it could temporarily distract me and make the pain a little easier to bear. Only when one bloody mark after another appeared on my arm, new wounds overlapping old ones, did I finally stop. An elderly couple sat on a bench not far away. They watched me for a while before lowering their voices to talk. "That girl looks even younger than our daughter. She's so seriously ill, yet she doesn't even have anyone here with her. When the end comes... I'm afraid there may not even be anyone to arrange her funeral." The other old man sighed. "Poor child." I bit down hard on my lip. After the skin split, I could taste blood in my mouth too. But at least the pain in my body finally eased a little. I turned my attention back to my phone. The screen was filled with messages from Damian. He had been sending them nonstop since the night before. By now, there were already hundreds of messages in our chat. Every single one asked the same thing. What compensation did I want? I fell silent for a moment. The elderly couple had just said that when I died, there might not even be anyone to take care of my funeral. But suddenly, I realized there seemed to be a perfectly suitable person right in front of me. So I dialed the number I had long since memorized by heart. The call was answered almost immediately. Damian got straight to the point. "Decided what you want?" I took a deep breath. The taste of blood rose in my throat again. I forced it back down and said, "If you insist on compensating me... Damian, when I die, buy me a coffin." The other end of the line suddenly went silent. A few seconds later, Damian let out a mocking laugh. "Evelyn. Someone as ruthless as you, with a survival instinct tougher than a cockroach's, usually lives a very long time. But if you really do die before me one day, don't worry. I'll give you a very grand funeral. I'll make sure all of Washington, D.C. mourns for you." I was very satisfied with that answer. So I happily hung up. When I left the hospital, I saw the elderly couple from earlier again. I walked to the parking lot and started my car. Soon, I noticed that they had missed their bus. For some reason, I suddenly rolled down the window and called out to them, "Get in. I'll give you a ride." I drove them to their residential complex. When they got out, both of them thanked me over and over. I was just about to drive away when a voice I hated suddenly came from nearby. "Evelyn actually does good deeds?" I turned my head. Several of Damian's friends had just come out of the karaoke bar next door. Mia was clinging tightly to Damian's arm. The way she looked at me was anything but friendly. I didn't want to waste time talking to them. So I simply rolled up the window and prepared to leave. But Mia quickly walked over. She reached out and pressed her hand against my car window. There was a smile on her face, but her eyes were ice-cold. "Evelyn. I only recently found out that you and Damian had so much history together. Yesterday didn't make you feel uncomfortable, did it?" I had no interest in watching her keep up the act. So I tried to close the window again. But she kept gripping the edge, stopping me from raising it. "Wait. I still have something to give you." My patience finally ran out. "Stop pretending to be nice in front of me. Get lost." But after hearing that, Mia suddenly let go. Just as I was about to start the car, she pulled a small urn from her bag. Smiling, she said, "I heard your parents' ashes were lost in the flower shop yesterday. I was afraid you wouldn't have anything left to remember them by. So this morning, I went to the ruins of the shop myself. I collected some ashes from inside." The smile on her face was incredibly sweet. But what she did next was vicious. She reached her hand through the car window. Then, right in front of me, she poured all the ashes from the urn onto the driver's seat. Afterward, she deliberately put on a surprised expression. "Oh! Why didn't you catch them?" Her face was clearly full of malicious delight, yet she still pretended to be innocent. "I really didn't mean to. You'll forgive me, right?" In that instant, a surge of fury suddenly rose in my chest. I even forgot about the pain in my body for the moment. Good. This time, she was the one who had come looking for trouble. The others standing outside the karaoke bar still had no idea what had happened. They were even praising Mia. "Mia, you're way too kind. That woman is so vicious, and you still went out of your way to bring her something." Mia turned around smugly. She walked toward the brand-new Rolls-Royce parked up ahead. When she reached the car, she even deliberately jingled the keys in her hand. I rolled down my window again and called out to her, "Mia. I have a gift for you too." Mia turned around. Her eyes were full of provocation. "Evelyn, what are you going to give me?" I fastened my seat belt. Then I looked at her and said, one word at a time, "I'm sending you to your death." The moment the words left my mouth, I slammed my foot down on the accelerator.
