The mysterious Girl: Part 2 Chapter 1 - The Vanishing The air in Black Hollow had changed. It was no longer the peaceful town James Dawson had spent his entire life in. No, now it was a place on edge—a place where fear lingered behind every door, and every shadow seemed to hold a secret. The first disappearance had been quiet. A simple truck driver—Frank Albright, 42. His rig was found abandoned on the side of Route 27, the engine still running, and his keys left in the ignition. His truck had been traveling from nearby Gables, but when the sheriff arrived, there was no sign of Frank. Just an empty truck. No body, no struggle. The second disappearance—Samantha Palmer, a teacher at Black Hollow High School. Her classroom was found as though nothing had changed. Her desk was still piled with papers, the whiteboard still covered in last week’s lesson. But Samantha was gone. No one had seen her leave. No sign of a struggle. By the time the third person vanished, people had started to whisper. James Dawson sat at his desk in the small office he had converted from an old bedroom. His face was pale, eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. His fingers were frozen mid-type on his old laptop. His attention had long since strayed from the police report he was trying to read. The words blurred before his eyes, but his mind kept returning to the single sentence in the report that had caught his eye: “No physical evidence. No signs of struggle. The missing persons seem to have vanished without a trace.” James clicked the zoom button on his laptop, zooming in on the most recent police report. The date: April 15th. Another disappearance. Then, his phone rang. He stared at the screen—unknown number. He almost didn’t answer. But something told him it was important. He picked up. “Dawson.” Static. Then, the faint sound of a whisper, low and threatening: “James.” He froze. His pulse quickened. The voice sounded distorted, like it was coming from a far-off place, a place where it didn’t belong. “Who is this?” James asked, his grip tightening on the phone. The voice lingered a moment longer. “She is not what you think she is.” The line went dead. James set the phone down slowly, staring at the screen. His heart raced. What the hell did that mean? Suddenly, he heard footsteps behind him. Lila. She stood in the doorway, her face pale, her expression unreadable. Her once calm eyes—those glowing emerald eyes—were now filled with a strange uncertainty, a fear that had never been there before. “You heard, didn’t you?” James asked, his voice strained. Lila nodded. She stepped into the room, her gaze flickering to the report still open on the screen. “It’s happening again, isn’t it?” James didn’t answer. Instead, he looked down at the police report, his mind racing. It wasn’t just a random string of disappearances. There was a pattern. There had to be. And it all pointed to something darker than anything he’d ever seen before. Then, from the other room, a voice broke the tension. “Dad? Lila?” It was Ethan. The door to the office opened, and Ethan stepped inside, his eyes wide with excitement. But as soon as he saw the expression on their faces, his own demeanor shifted. “What’s going on?” “Something’s wrong,” James muttered. “Something’s changed.” Claire entered, rubbing her eyes. She’d been up late last night, trying to understand what was happening in the town. She hadn’t gotten much sleep either. Her face was drawn with worry, but her resolve was unshaken. “I can feel it too,” Claire said, her voice low. “Whatever’s happening—it’s not just the town. It’s you, Lila. Something’s happening to you.” Lila’s heart skipped a beat. “What do you mean?” Before Claire could respond, the room suddenly grew cold. A chill that seemed to suck the air out of the room. The wind outside picked up, rattling the windows, and the lights flickered. Lila gasped, her body shuddering as she felt an overwhelming sense of wrongness flood her mind. She wasn’t sure if it was the phone call, the energy in the room, or the terrifying vision that had suddenly taken root in her mind, but something was coming. Something she couldn’t control. Then, the phone rang again. This time, it was different. The voice on the other end was clearer. And this time, it sounded familiar. “Lila, you need to listen.” Lila’s breath caught in her throat. She recognized the voice. It was the voice of the Gatekeeper, the ancient figure who had helped them defeat the Devourer. “Where are you? What’s happening?” Lila asked, her voice trembling. There was a long pause on the other end. Then, the Gatekeeper’s voice returned, heavy with urgency. “The Phantom King has awakened. And it is coming for you.”
