Chapter 5: Unanswered questions.
Eric Pov
That damn perfume is all I can smell. Its disgusting like it perforated my whole house he will burn those close. Why do needy women use such ghastly smells?
I went to the kitchen and looked at the table. Well so much for dinner, I really had made it myself. The secret most don’t know is that I have a passion for it. Nothing fancy but down to earth cooking: stews, pastas, entrees, casseroles, even lasagna. I loved to make the comfort foods. Granted I didn’t need to eat but it sure was fun. Humans greatest discovery was mixing flavors.
Sighing I rinsed the lids and then put them back over the food placing them in the fridge maybe later someone would be able to eat them.
Footsteps from the hall could be heard they were coming this way. I guess he was willing to wait instead of going straight to playroom. That was fine with me I wanted to know what the hell was going on.
“In here Alex, we need to talk”
I sat at the island on the opposite side of the sink admiring the countertop. it was a beautiful pink granite. I had gone thru hell to find it only when you sat in front of it could you see the pink. Most people thought it was white but no one every really got close to it either.
“Why is Rose here Eric? Do you know what she does for a living or do you always invite assassins to your private homes?” His voiced held no anger if anything he sounded tired.
“While no I didn’t know she was one till around dinner it was not the reason I had invited her. Why don’t you tell me how you know Kay?” There may have been some resentment in my voice, but I couldn’t help it. She is supposed to be my mate!
Alex sat down next to Eric and pushed the file to him.
“We have a deep past if you want to call it that. More like we have a sort of happily f****d up past. I was taking my turn patrolling our territory seven years ago and found her scent. I knew immediately that she was my mate. However, I couldn’t find her.” He chuckled softly. This was the first time I heard him laugh.
“I started talking more turns patrolling so that I could try and find her. Her scent would randomly show up and then like magic just disappear. This went on for months and was driving my wolf and me crazy. She finally let me find her four years ago. We were together and I made her my Luna.” His voice was raspy and cold as he said this.
“What happened?” If they were mates and he wasn’t dead, then how was she my second chance mate?
“Things didn’t work out. My pack the entire pack surprisingly rejected her as Luna. I have no idea why and no one would tell me. Just some ominous bullshit about you will see blah blah blah… Later her parents got involved. It ended in a bloody mess.” He was looking far off at something and I could only assume he was remembering something.
“Why doesn’t she like children mentioned in her presence? She had a very adverse reaction earlier to me telling her my brother had a daughter.”
Alex looked down in his hands and rested his forehead on the counter. He was wrestling with something inside probably felt like he had to protect her secret. Sweet really but he didn’t know that I myself was ready to stab him with that silver knife if I didn’t get the answers I wanted.
“pffff…. She’s against it because its to painful. I doubt she’s let herself feel anything since…. It happened…I know she blames me and hell I do to. I should have done more, tried harder, not been such a selfish asshole.” He looked at me his eyes void of emotion. “We need to hurry up and get in there she hasn’t been in cuffs or chains in three years. I don’t see her as someone willing to let this go either. “
I stood and started walking to the playroom. “Did you put her in chains Alex?” I growled out.
“No, her family did. After she was in them, they decided it was a good idea to torture her for information and when she refused, they used hallucinogens.”
I opened the door not waiting for Alex to follow and went to the bed. There was a small lamp beside it I turned it on so I could see her. Well that and I really wanted a reason to be near her, touch her, smell her. She has the sweetest smell of honey suckles it was the most amazing smell I had ever smelt.
I looked at her and she was asleep. She really was the worst assassin ever how does she sleep so much. I chuckled to myself softly.
Kay’s Pov
I got tired of waiting and the room smelt so good. Lavender, it smelt wonderful.
I was awoken by a soft chuckle.
I didn’t dare open my eyes. There are two smells in the room one was Mate and the other was Eric. I still didn’t understand why there were working together or even if they were.
“I know your awake Rose might as well open your eyes and talk to us.” Mate said.
Ugh the audacity wasn’t he full of himself the little prick. It irks me that he still knows something so simple. In the last three years I felt no earth-shattering pain, so I knew he had been with no other. I smiled knowing that he felt some from me though.
“What do you want MURDER?” I spat. Looking up at the ceiling.
“Kind of rich coming from a professional isn’t it?”
“Everyone I take out had it coming for one horrible crime or another. What about you all you victims guilty…oh wait- “
“IT WASN’T MY FAULT! I TRIED! DAMN IT I LOST YOU BOTH IN THE PROCESS!” He yelled his eyes shinning black. Wolf.
“You didn’t try hard enough did you? You didn’t stop your pack either funny little coincidence isn’t it?” I tried to lift myself up so that I could look him in the eye.
“My pack had nothing to do with it. They didn’t even know, hell I didn’t even know did I kay?” Venom laced his voice.
I shrugged my shoulders. “They weren’t worthy, and you proved that you are not either. It was your delta’s wife by the way. She found them and told them everything. I’ll never know what I did to cause her to betray me like that but don’t worry she is on my list to.”
Alex’s face paled and his mouth hung open. He didn’t know, this only made me feel a little better.
I raised my eyebrow. “Really now Alex l would close my mouth. You wouldn’t want flies, now would you?”
He immediately shut his mouth and looked at me. “Whatever your family gave you that made you believe he is dead… he is alive, and I have proof if you are willing to listen.”
“There was too much blood Alex there is no way.”
“Kay there was no blood. I arrived after you escaped the only blood was those of your family. I searched everywhere and didn’t find him. The only thing I did find that smelled of him was a letter. They sent him to one of your cousins on the high council.”
That didn’t make any sense. I smelt his blood, all over my mother’s clothes. “you checked everybody? Even my evil b***h of a mother Alex?” I whispered. My emotions were threatening to take over.
“Especially your mother. There was no blood besides her own. She had a knife wound on her hand from cutting something and the other wounds. His blood wasn’t there. He is still alive.”
I was starting to have trouble breathing. Each breath was a painful burn and my lungs were on fire I couldn’t get enough oxygen.
I told you he was alive child. Why did you not listen to me? My connection with him is still strong. He is strong. Let’s find our boy and bring him home please we need this. We need him. Look at your mate love you can tell if he is lying. Ask to speak with his wolf they can not lie. Let him help us. You can kill him after we get our sunshine back. Luna spoke as if comforting a child and I felt like one. How could I be wrong? Why did I not search for him? I let revenge eat at me and ignored Luna for so long. I was a child. A bitter vindictive child.
“Show me the proof.” I said my voice uneven tears were threatening to fall.
Alex left the room and I started at the door in his absence. My thoughts consuming me. Regret, shame, anger.
Eric’s Pov
I sat there watching listening.
My chest hurt seeing her in pain. It’s a strange thing the mate bond. No matter when you meet them your immediate love them and want to protect them.
She flung words at Alex and he took it in stride.
Whatever she blamed him for it was obvious he blamed himself more. Anguish was in his eyes.
I too wonder who the deltas wife is and why she betrayed an alpha and wife. Something wasn’t right there. That’s not how packs work. How as a whole pack able to reject a Luna? What did they know that they wouldn’t even tell there Alpha?
When Kay started hyperventilating, I laid my hand on her thigh to calm her. She still hadn’t noticed me, and I wanted her to know she was safe. Her breathing finally slowed as Alex went to go get her proof that she required.
I had a hint of who “He” is and why she couldn’t handle hearing about them. They had a child together. She believed the child dead and her first mates’ fault. Or at least partially at fault.
Alex’s Pov
I stood in the room trying to catch my breath. She was hurting and it was magnified in my chest. The pain, anger, guilt. She was willing to let it eat her up. I went to the nightstand and grabbed my USB. It had everything I had gathered the last five years.
It wasn’t easy talking to her but at least she didn’t break threw the cuffs and attack me. He wondered if Eric’s presence had anything to do with it. He sat there calming thru the whole thing absorbing information and giving Kay comfort when she needed it.
I wanted to smash his face in for touching her but that would have got me nowhere. Why was he so damn interested in her? Why was he f*****g touching her?
I found myself in the doorway watching them. Kay was still deep in her head most likely having a discussion with Lilith. Her she wolfs a beautiful gray and purple wolf three times the size of even an alpha king. She was magnificent though strong, fast, a damn good hunter. Her wolf let no one best her showing no mercy for anyone even me.
Eric had his hand on her thigh caressing her with his thumb. My vision went red and then I heard it. Her breathing was even normal even. What the hell only a mate’s touch could do that.
“What are you guys to each other?” I asked. Oh man oh man I really don’t want the answer to this. Wolf do I want the answer? You already know, don’t you? Its why you are so quite…
Eric looked at her to see if she heard. Suddenly she looked at him like she was noticing him for the first time. She followed his hand with her eyes humor behind them.
“Well that explains how I was able to calm down so fast. You’ve heard everything so far haven’t you Eric?” he asked amusement playing on her face.
“Indeed. It does explain some questions I had earlier but not all.” He stated.
“I will tell him if you tell him.” She teased.
Why is she playing with him? When did she even become playful for three years she has been venom and vinegar no chance for nicety?
Eric sighed “Might as well.” He looked me in the eye with a strange intensity. “I’m her second chance mate.”
What? But I am not dead…
“I’m his second chance mate too. “She said it lightly trying to soften the blow.
“But I am not dead Kay.”
