Shadows That Bite

983 Words
The city was quieter tonight, but the shadows felt heavier. Every street corner seemed alive, whispering warnings I couldn’t ignore. I clutched my sketchbook tighter, walking faster, but my mind kept replaying Lucien’s eyes—the gold that burned like fire, the warmth of his hand near mine. I shouldn’t be thinking about him. And yet… I couldn’t stop. A sudden movement from the alley behind me made me spin. My heart jumped. He was there. Lucien. Always there when I didn’t expect him. “You shouldn’t be wandering alone,” he said, stepping closer. His coat brushed mine, and sparks of heat ran down my spine. “I thought I was supposed to stay away,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “You can’t,” he said softly, almost a growl. “Not when you’re already marked.” I shivered at the word. “Marked… by you?” “By what you are. By what you’ll become,” he said. His eyes softened for a moment, but the gold in them never faded. It was mesmerizing. Dangerous. I wanted to look away, but I couldn’t. “You’re insane,” I whispered. “No,” he said, voice low, pulling me slightly closer. “I’m exactly what you need.” My lips tingled, almost aching from the near touch of his. My pulse thundered. The world around us—the festival lights, the music, the crowd—faded into nothing. Only him. Only this tension, this pull, this dangerous craving I couldn’t control. Then a sound cut through the night—a low growl, unmistakable and close. Lucien’s head snapped to the shadows, muscles taut, eyes sharp, teeth glinting. “Stay close,” he said, wrapping a protective arm around me. “They’re near.” “Who?” I whispered, fear and thrill mingling. “Rival pack,” he said, his voice harsh. “They know about you. They’ll come for you. They’ll come for me. Tonight, if we’re not careful.” I swallowed hard, my body pressed against him, feeling the warmth of his chest, the strength in his arms. My mind screamed to step back, but another part—a part that craved him—wanted to lean in, wanted to feel more, wanted to test the pull that had been building since the first night. “Lucien…” I breathed. “Yes?” he said, his jaw tight, eyes locked on mine. “You… want me,” I whispered. His lips brushed the corner of mine—soft, teasing, just a whisper of contact—and I gasped. Electricity shot through me. My heartbeat raced, faster than it had ever gone before. “Yes,” he said, voice low and almost dangerous. “I want you. And soon, you’ll want me too.” A movement in the dark snapped both our heads around. Shadows shifted unnaturally. Lucien’s hand gripped mine firmly, pulling me behind a trash bin, hiding us from the street. He pressed close, body tense. My breath hitched from the proximity, and the tension was unbearable. “Don’t move,” he whispered, teeth flashing in a faint grin. “Or they’ll see you.” I could feel the wildness in him now—not just human warmth, but predator instincts, alpha presence, and danger. My pulse pounded. Desire and fear tangled inside me, impossible to separate. “They’re gone… for now,” he said finally, eyes scanning the street before turning back to me. “But you’re not safe. Not yet. Not ever. And every moment you feel safe… is a lie.” I shivered. “Why me?” “Because I can’t let you go,” he said, stepping closer again. “Because I’ve waited a long time for someone like you.” The heat of his body, the intensity in his gaze, the whisper of his breath near my ear—it was too much. My fingers brushed his hand. My lips almost touched his. Just inches. My chest burned, my stomach twisted. I wanted to close the gap. I wanted to feel the full spark. But before anything could happen, a howl cut through the night. Claws scraped concrete. I screamed. Lucien reacted instantly, moving between me and the shadows, body coiled, eyes gold and glowing. In one fluid motion, the threat retreated, but the danger remained. He pulled me close, holding me as if the world could never touch us here. “Do you feel it?” he whispered. “The bond? The pull? It’s already started. You can’t ignore it. And you won’t want to.” “I…” I swallowed hard, my voice caught in my throat. “I don’t know if I can handle this.” “You’ll handle it,” he said, his lips brushing my hair, almost brushing my temple. “Or you’ll learn to run, but it won’t save you. Not from me. Not from this life. Not from the bite that already claimed you.” I shivered again, the thrill and fear mixing, and realized one thing: there was no going back. Every heartbeat, every look, every brush of his hand was pulling me deeper into a world I didn’t understand—but one I couldn’t resist. The street was empty again, but the night felt alive. Every shadow could hide danger, every sound a warning. And yet… I wanted him. More than I should. More than I was supposed to. Lucien stepped back, disappearing into the shadows with a final glance over his shoulder. Gold eyes burning into mine. “Be ready,” he said. “Because once it starts… nothing will ever be the same.” I was left trembling, wet from the drizzle, heart racing, lips tingling. The city was quiet now, but my mind screamed with one truth: I had been marked. And the bite in the dark had begun.
