Flames in the Dark

924 Words
The night air was thick, hot, and heavy with the scent of rain and pavement. I could still feel Lucien’s presence from earlier—like a shadow pressing against my skin, teasing me, warning me. Every instinct told me to run, to stay away, but every heartbeat, every thrum of tension, pulled me closer to him. I was walking through the empty streets near the festival area, sketchbook clutched against my chest, when I felt it again—the pull. That undeniable, magnetic pull that made my stomach twist and my pulse race. “You’re impossible to ignore,” he said, his voice low, smooth, and deep, from the shadow behind me. I jumped, spinning around. Lucien stood there, just a few feet away. His coat was damp from the drizzle, hair falling slightly over his forehead. Gold eyes glimmered in the faint streetlight. My breath hitched. “You scared me,” I whispered, heart hammering. “I meant to,” he said with a smirk that made my knees weak. “Keeps you alert.” I rolled my eyes but couldn’t stop noticing how close he was. Close enough that I could feel his heat, close enough that my fingers itched to brush against him. “Why do you keep following me?” I asked, trying to sound angry, but my voice betrayed me—shaky, breathless. “Because I can’t stay away,” he said simply, stepping closer. His hand lifted, brushing a strand of wet hair from my face. Sparks ran down my arm at the light touch. My breath hitched. “Because every moment apart makes the pull stronger. And I can’t risk losing you.” “I… I don’t even know what I am to you,” I murmured. My pulse screamed as he tilted his head, eyes scanning mine like he was trying to read my soul. “You’re mine,” he whispered, voice low, rough. “Claimed the moment I saw you. And the bite… it will seal what’s already started.” I swallowed hard, body trembling. His gaze was gold, intense, unrelenting, and I couldn’t look away. My hands itched to touch him, to feel his skin against mine. But the danger around us was real. Shadows shifted, and I could sense them—the rivals, lurking, waiting. Lucien leaned in, so close that his lips almost brushed mine. My heartbeat jumped. I wanted to close the gap, wanted to let the tension ignite, but I froze. “Not yet,” he whispered, just above my lips. “Soon. But not yet.” The air between us was electric, crackling with desire and heat. Every instinct screamed to move, to give in, to taste the pull that had been growing since our first night. I could feel it in every nerve, every pulse, every breath. Before I could react further, a sound—a low growl—echoed from the shadows. Lucien stiffened instantly, eyes glowing gold, teeth flashing. He stepped in front of me, protective, alpha, untouchable. “They’re here,” he said, voice low, tense. “Rival pack. They’ve followed us. They’ll try anything to take you… to take me.” I shivered, not from cold, but from the heat of him, from the danger, from the impossible pull between us. My pulse raced, and my lips tingled from being so close. “Lucien…” I breathed. “Yes?” he said, jaw tight, eyes fierce. “I… I don’t know if I can do this,” I whispered. Every part of me was alive with desire and fear. “You already are,” he said, voice low, rough. “And soon… you won’t fight it. You’ll want it. You’ll want me.” He leaned closer again, lips brushing my ear, teeth grazing the skin just slightly. My stomach twisted, and my fingers curled against my sketchbook. The pull—the tension—the desire—it was too much. “You’re insane,” I whispered, half-pleading, half-breathless. “No,” he said, hand brushing my cheek. “I’m exactly what you need. And soon… you’ll feel it too.” Suddenly, a shadow moved across the alley. My heart jumped. Lucien reacted instantly, pushing me behind him, body tense, eyes gold and glowing. In one swift motion, the danger disappeared, retreating, but the warning remained. “See?” he said, still pressed close to me. “You’re never safe. Not here, not anywhere. But you’re mine. And I won’t let anyone hurt you.” My chest burned, lips tingled, knees weak. I wanted to step into him, wanted to let the tension explode into fire, but the danger… it was real. I had to wait. Had to survive. And yet… my mind couldn’t stop imagining the taste of his lips, the brush of his hands, the pull of his power. He whispered again, almost teasing: “Soon, it will be impossible to resist. Every touch, every glance, every heartbeat will call to you. And you won’t fight it… I promise.” My heart thundered. My breath hitched. The city seemed to vanish around us. Shadows and heat, desire and danger, pulled me into a world I couldn’t resist. Then he stepped back, disappearing into the night with one last glance. Gold eyes piercing mine. Sparks of heat lingering in the air. And I was left trembling, alive, aching, and terrified. One thought ran through me louder than anything else: I was already his. The bite in the dark had begun. And I wanted it.
