Chapter Nine — The Line He Shouldn’t Have Crossed Zayden didn’t want to open up. But he did. A little. And that scared him more than anything Helena ever did. Because Ariana hadn’t pried. She hadn’t pushed. She’d just sat there. Still. Steady. Present. It disarmed him. So, of course, he did the one thing he always did when he felt vulnerable— He attacked. --- “You think staying quiet makes you strong?” he said the next morning, pacing the length of the hallway outside his office. Ariana stared at him, arms crossed. “I think it keeps me from saying things I’ll regret.” He scoffed. “Right. Because pretending to be unbothered is so noble.” “You want me to be unbothered,” she replied. “That’s the only version of me you’ve ever tolerated.” He turned to her sharply. “No. I want you to stop acting like you know me. You don’t.” “And you don’t know yourself,” she shot back. “You’re so afraid of being seen, you hide behind cruelty.” He froze. A flicker of something dangerous crossed his face. “Careful, Ariana,” he said lowly. “You’re not entitled to understand me.” “No,” she said softly. “But I’m your wife. And whether you like it or not, I’m the only one still standing here when everyone else gave up.” That struck a nerve. He stepped closer. Too close. “I didn’t ask you to stay.” “No,” she whispered. “You didn’t. But you didn’t ask me to leave either.” The tension between them snapped like a live wire. Zayden’s hand brushed her arm — not hard, not cruel, but enough to make her heart stutter. “Don’t tempt me,” he said, voice low and hoarse. Ariana held his gaze. “Then don’t look at me like you already are.” His jaw clenched. Then he did something unexpected. He stepped back. Turned away. And said nothing more. --- That night, Ariana sat alone in the garden. Eleanor found her there. Her voice soft, knowing. “You challenged him, didn’t you?” Ariana looked down. “He keeps pushing everyone away. I pushed back.” Eleanor smiled sadly. “Good. Just don’t lose yourself in the fight.” “Too late,” Ariana whispered. “I think I already started to care.” --- Back inside, Zayden stood at the window… staring at her through the glass. She looked like she didn’t belong in his world of shadows and sharp edges. And yet— She was the only thing keeping it from collapsing.
