Chapter 4

Yvonne had already woken up during the argument. Shawn let go of me and walked quickly to the hospital bed. "Daddy…" Yvonne shrank back in terror. But he grabbed Yvonne by the slender back of her neck, dragged her into the bathroom, and shoved her into the bathtub full of water. "Shawn, you lunatic, let her go! She's your daughter!" I lunged at him like a madwoman, only to be pinned down hard by his bodyguards. Water splashed everywhere, and Yvonne's feeble flailing cut through my heart like a knife. I broke down, begging frantically, "I'm sorry! I was wrong! Shawn, I'll apologize to her! You let my Yvonne go! Please!" Shawn looked at me in my despair, his eyes ice-cold. "I can't bring myself to hurt you, but I need to make you see what price you pay for harming my child!" As soon as he finished speaking, his bodyguard picked up a dumbbell used for rehabilitation and swung it straight at my daughter's small body. A faint sound of shattering bone echoed, and bright red blood instantly spread out from beneath the water, turning the entire bathtub crimson. Julia whispered to me in smug satisfaction, "See? I won." "Shawn Quinn, you beast! She's your daughter! I will never forgive you!" Screaming until my lungs burned, I shoved the bodyguards aside in a frenzy, lunged to the bathtub, fished out my soaking-wet daughter—blood pouring nonstop from the back of her head—and sprinted out of the ward, screaming for a doctor. Seeing this, Shawn froze slightly, a flicker of confusion and hesitation crossing his face. "Did I… go too far?" Julia immediately clutched her stomach and moaned in pain. "Shawn, you raised that bastard child for years. You've already done more than enough. Everything you did today is just to protect our child. You didn't do anything wrong." Shawn's guilt was instantly replaced by the unquestionable logic of "protecting his own flesh and blood." "I didn't do wrong. She never should have laid a hand on you." He calmed down and helped her go see a doctor. As for me, I slumped on the floor outside the emergency room, my whole body covered in my daughter's blood. Three full hours passed before the door to the emergency room finally swung open. Yvonne was out of danger, but she had a skull fracture, a severe concussion that would take time to heal, and had suffered devastating psychological trauma. Overwhelmed with guilt, I stayed by her bedside and never left her for a moment. When she woke up, she weakly squeezed my hand, all the light gone from her eyes. "Mommy, does Daddy hate me that much? I don't want Daddy to like me anymore. Can we just leave this place, please?" I had not dared to leave before, largely because Yvonne loved her daddy so much. Even though he had brushed her off again and again, craving a father's love is only human nature. Now, there was nothing left in Yvonne's eyes but fear. My heart ached so badly I could barely stand it, and I held her tight. "Okay. Mommy will take you away. We'll leave here forever." I changed our flight time, didn't even go home, and took my daughter straight to the airport. Meanwhile, after Shawn returned to the company, a sharp, stabbing pain suddenly shot through his body. He frowned, remembered how I had repeatedly reminded him to get a medical checkup, and sent his assistant to arrange it. He picked up his phone and sent me a message. Shawn: I went for a checkup like you asked. Message not sent. You are no longer friends with this contact. Shawn froze, his face instantly turning ice-cold. He used a servant's phone to call me, but I did not answer. Holding back his anger, he sent me another message. Shawn: Jennifer, how dare you block me! I'll give you three days. If you don't come apologize to me, I swear you will regret it! Three days later, there was still no word from me. Shawn was finally too furious to sit still and went to the biological research institute in person to ask the head of the institute to undo the "curse" he believed I had put on him. But the head only replied in confusion: "Dr. Jennifer Young? She resigned ten days ago. She's preparing for a divorce, and she even finished all the paperwork to transfer her child to another school. Didn't you know?" "What?" Shawn stared in shock. Before he could process what he had heard, his phone started ringing wildly. He answered it on instinct, and only heard his assistant's panicked voice on the other end, "Mr. Quinn! Your physical examination report came back. You have acute renal failure. You need a kidney transplant as soon as possible. "The doctor said both Madam and Miss Quinn did HLA matching for you, and the only perfect match is your biological daughter—Yvonne Quinn."
