FORTY-TWO Only one thing could drag Ursula out of despair. "There's an army camped at the entrance to the pass! Lord Vauquelin has returned!" Ursula raised her head to see the wide-eyed boy before he shouted the news again. "How many?" Pan demanded, grabbing the boy's arm. "More than us," the boy said, twisting free. "I dunno." With a nod, Pan despatched two men to investigate. Bernard had gone with them, like he'd planned all along. No wonder he hadn't cared what she wore to the wedding. He'd never intended to attend. The men returned within the hour, bringing word that the army was less than a hundred strong, with only a couple of knights.
