The day at the hospital passed in a blur for Ethan. Each patient, each procedure, felt like a distant echo as his thoughts kept drifting back to Olivia. He found himself distracted, a little less focused than usual, though he did his best to push it aside. As a doctor, he was used to compartmentalizing his emotions. But today, it wasn’t easy. By the time his shift ended, the sun was beginning to set. He drove home, his mind replaying the words he had spoken to Olivia earlier. "I don’t want to pretend anymore." He hadn’t expected to say that, not so soon, but he couldn’t deny the truth of it. He didn’t want to pretend, not when what he felt for her was real. When he got home, he found Lily in the living room, playing with her dolls on the floor. She looked up when she heard him enter and smiled widely.
"Hi, Daddy!" she chirped, rushing over to give him a hug. "I made a new family for my dolls!"
Ethan smiled and crouched down to her level. "A new family, huh? What does it look like?"
Lily's eyes sparkled as she explained, "This one is just like us! There’s the mommy, the daddy, and me! And the mommy looks like Olivia, and the daddy looks like you!"
Ethan froze for a second, the weight of Lily’s innocent words settling in his chest. He’d known that Lily was starting to form attachments to Olivia, but hearing it put so plainly… it hit harder than he expected.
“That’s nice, sweetie,” he said, his voice softer than usual. “But remember, Olivia’s not really part of our family. She’s just here to help.”
Lily’s face fell slightly, but she nodded. “But she’s nice. I like her. She makes me laugh.”
Ethan didn’t have the heart to argue with her. He had seen how comfortable Lily had become with Olivia. It was easy to see why Olivia had a natural warmth, a kindness that drew people in. Including Lily. After a few more moments of playtime, Ethan decided to check in with Olivia. He grabbed his phone, hesitated for a second, then sent her a simple message.
Ethan: I was thinking about you. How was your day?
He pressed send, then sat down with Lily for dinner. He tried to push his growing thoughts about Olivia to the back of his mind, but the truth was, it wasn’t easy. And the more time he spent with Lily, the more he realized that he wanted something more than just this arrangement.
Across town, Olivia was in her small apartment, trying to unwind after a long day at work. Her mind, too, kept drifting back to Ethan. It had been a couple of days since their conversation, and though she had tried to focus on her tasks, she couldn’t stop thinking about him. She had told him she needed time, but what she needed more than time was clarity. As she sat down with a cup of tea, her phone buzzed, and she saw Ethan’s message pop up. She hesitated for a moment, chewing on her lower lip. She had been thinking about him too, but she wasn’t sure if she was ready to dive back into this… whatever it was. She typed a quick response:
Olivia: It was good. Busy, but I managed. How about you?
She pressed send and set her phone down. She couldn’t help but feel a little nervous about what Ethan might say next.
A few moments later, her phone buzzed again.
Ethan: I missed you today. I thought about what you said. I just... I really want to make this work. If you feel the same way.
Olivia’s heart skipped a beat. His words hit her like a wave. She had expected more casual conversation, not this. She stared at the screen for a long moment, her mind swirling with doubt and longing. She was scared. Scared of letting herself fall for someone she didn’t know fully. Scared of repeating past mistakes. But at the same time, there was a pull. A connection with Ethan that felt undeniable. She took a deep breath, her fingers shaking as she typed her response.
Olivia: I don’t know, Ethan. I really don’t. But I can’t stop thinking about you either.
She pressed send, then placed the phone face down on the table. Her heart was racing. What had she just done?
The next morning, Ethan woke up to the sound of Lily calling for him from her room. After quickly getting ready, he headed to her room to find her sitting up in bed, clutching her favorite stuffed animal.
"Good morning, Daddy!" she said brightly, her eyes sparkling.
"Morning, kiddo," he replied with a smile, leaning over to kiss her forehead. "Ready for another day at school?"
Lily nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! Can we ask Olivia to come play with me later? She promised!"
Ethan’s smile faltered slightly. Olivia had promised to visit, but he didn’t know where they stood yet. He didn’t want to disappoint Lily, but the reality of what Olivia had said still weighed heavily on him.
"I’ll ask her, alright? Let’s get you ready first."
As Ethan helped Lily get dressed and ready for school, his mind wandered again to Olivia. He needed to see her, to talk to her face-to-face. They couldn’t keep avoiding what was between them. After dropping Lily off at school, he decided to text Olivia once more.
Ethan: Can we meet today? I need to talk to you.
Meanwhile, Olivia was already on her way to work when she saw Ethan's message. Her heart skipped, and she quickly typed a response:
Olivia: Sure. When and where?
Ethan: How about coffee at the café we always go to?
Olivia didn’t hesitate this time. She typed back:
Olivia: Sounds good. See you soon.
Later that day, at the café, the familiar hum of conversation and clinking of cups filled the air. Ethan arrived first and found a small table by the window. He ordered coffee for both of them, the anticipation making his stomach twist with nervous excitement.
A few minutes later, Olivia walked in, her expression uncertain but hopeful. She spotted him right away and walked over, sitting across from him. They exchanged a brief, uncertain smile before both of them reached for their coffee cups.
Ethan took a deep breath.
"Olivia… I’ve been thinking about us. I don’t want to rush things, but I can’t ignore what’s happening between us. I know it’s complicated, but I want to give us a chance. If you’re willing to try."
Olivia’s heart fluttered at his words, but a part of her hesitated. She had to be sure this wasn’t just a fleeting feeling, a moment of weakness.
"I don’t know, Ethan," she said softly. "But I’m willing to try, too."
Their eyes locked, and for the first time, the weight of their unspoken feelings hung in the air between them, fragile, yet undeniable.
The air between Olivia and Ethan was thick with the weight of their shared, tentative confession. As the silence stretched, both of them sipped their coffee, the comforting warmth of the drink doing little to ease the tension. Finally, Olivia put her cup down and looked up at Ethan.
"I think we need to be careful," she said quietly. "This isn’t just about us anymore. Lily’s involved, and we can’t just throw ourselves into something without thinking about her."
Ethan nodded slowly, acknowledging her concern. "I know. That’s why I’ve been hesitant. I’ve thought about it too. But the way she looks at you… the way she talks about you… it’s like you’re already part of her life."
Olivia felt her heart tug at the thought of Lily. She hadn’t expected to get so attached to the little girl, but it was impossible to ignore the bond they had formed over the past few weeks. "She’s an amazing little girl. And I care about her too," Olivia said, her voice soft but firm.
"I know," Ethan responded, his eyes steady on her. "I’m just asking if we can take a chance. I don’t want to risk losing what we have, what we could have. I want to make this work. With you. With Lily."
The sincerity in his voice made Olivia’s heart race. She looked down at her hands, feeling the weight of his words settle in her chest. Was she ready to take this leap? She didn’t want to hurt Lily. And she didn’t want to end up heartbroken, especially not after everything she had been through.
"I’m not saying yes," Olivia said after a moment of thought, "but I’m willing to try. We take it slow. See where it goes."
Ethan’s expression softened, and he reached across the table, his fingers brushing hers lightly. "Thank you. That’s all I’m asking for."
The days that followed were filled with tentative steps forward. Olivia continued her routine of working, caring for Lily, and trying to make sense of her feelings for Ethan. Each day, they spent more time together. Whether it was taking Lily to the park or having dinner at Ethan’s place, their bond grew stronger. But despite the growing closeness, Olivia couldn’t shake the feeling of uncertainty. She wanted this. She wanted Ethan, and she wanted to be there for Lily but she wasn’t sure if she was ready to open herself up completely. One afternoon, after picking up Lily from kindergarten, Olivia walked into Ethan’s house. She had been over several times before, but today it felt different. There was a quietness in the air, like something was on the verge of changing.
As she set down her things, Ethan came into the living room from the kitchen, holding a plate of cookies.
"I made these," he said, offering them to her with a hopeful smile.
Olivia couldn’t help but laugh. "You? Baking?"
Ethan shrugged, looking sheepish. "I thought I’d give it a try. They’re not half bad."
She picked one up, taking a small bite. "Not bad at all," she admitted, her eyes meeting his. "I didn’t expect this from you."
Ethan’s gaze softened as he watched her. "There’s a lot about me you don’t know yet," he said quietly, his voice carrying an edge of vulnerability. Olivia looked down at the cookie in her hand, the warmth of the moment pulling at her heart.
"I don’t know if I’m ready for all of it," she whispered. "I’m scared, Ethan."
Ethan crossed the room and sat beside her, his presence steady and comforting. "I get it. But you don’t have to be ready all at once. We’ll go at your pace. No rush."
Her heart beat faster as she realized how much she wanted this, how much she wanted him. She let out a breath, leaning back against the couch, her fingers absently tracing the edge of the plate.
"Okay," she said finally. "We’ll go slow."
Just then, Lily came running into the room, her face lighting up when she saw Olivia. "Olivia!" she cried, climbing up on the couch and snuggling between them. "I’m hungry!"
Olivia smiled, feeling a rush of warmth flood her chest. She glanced at Ethan, who was watching her with a soft smile of his own. It was moments like this: simple, quiet moments that made her feel like maybe, just maybe, she could belong here.
"I’ll get you some lunch, kiddo," Olivia said, leaning in to give Lily a kiss on the cheek.
Later that Night.
After dinner, as they were cleaning up, Olivia and Ethan found themselves alone in the kitchen. The quiet hum of the evening settled over them, and they shared a lingering look.
"I’ve been thinking about something," Ethan said, his voice low. "What if we take this to the next level? Not just with Lily, but with us. You and me. We don’t have to keep hiding it anymore."
Olivia’s pulse quickened at the suggestion, and she turned to face him. "What do you mean?"
Ethan moved closer, the intensity in his eyes making her breath catch. "I mean, we’re already a family in some ways. Why not make it official? Why not make this real?"
The words hung in the air between them, and for a moment, Olivia wasn’t sure how to respond. Could she really let herself fall for him completely? Could she allow herself to open up and trust him?
Before she could say anything, Lily’s voice echoed from the living room. "Mommy! Daddy! Come quick! There’s something on TV!"
Olivia chuckled softly, the tension breaking as she looked at Ethan. "We’ll talk later," she said, her voice gentle but uncertain.
Ethan nodded, but the smile never left his face. "I’ll wait."
