The sound of Lily’s laughter echoed through the apartment as Olivia and Ethan made their way into the living room. The little girl was sprawled out on the floor, pointing at the television with wide, amused eyes.
"Look! That dog is just like Mr. Fluffles!" she exclaimed, referencing her favorite stuffed animal.
Ethan chuckled, sitting down beside her. "Except this one is real, sweetheart."
Lily pouted dramatically. "But Mr. Fluffles is real to me."
Olivia smiled, watching their interaction. It was moments like this that made her heart warm. Seeing Ethan so effortlessly playing the role of a loving father. She had been hesitant, unsure if she should truly open up to him, but every day made it harder to resist. She took a seat on the couch, tucking her legs beneath her as she observed them. Ethan looked up at her, catching her gaze. His eyes softened, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. Lily, oblivious to the tension between them, reached for Olivia’s hand and tugged her down to sit beside them.
"Olivia, come closer!" she demanded.
Laughing, Olivia scooted forward, feeling the warmth of Ethan’s arm brush against hers. The tiny contact sent shivers down her spine, and she silently cursed herself for reacting so strongly. Lily’s eyes flickered between the two adults and then suddenly, she gasped dramatically.
"Wait!" She pointed at them with an accusing finger. "You two are sitting like a real mommy and daddy!"
Both Olivia and Ethan stiffened at her innocent observation. Olivia felt her cheeks heat up, while Ethan cleared his throat, attempting to mask his amusement.
"Uh...Lily..." Ethan started, but the little girl had already made up her mind.
"You should just marry Olivia, Daddy! Then she can be my real mommy!"
Olivia choked on air. Ethan’s eyes widened.
"Lily!" Ethan scolded, but his voice carried a light, teasing edge. "You can’t just tell people to get married."
"Why not?" Lily blinked, completely unbothered. "You like Olivia, don’t you? And Olivia likes you!"
Ethan hesitated for a second before glancing at Olivia, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Well… that’s something only Olivia can answer."
Olivia shot him a glare, her heart pounding. "Don’t drag me into this!"
Lily giggled, looking between the two of them. "I know you like each other. Grown-ups are just silly!"
Ethan smirked, leaning back against the couch. "You might be onto something, kiddo."
Olivia groaned, hiding her face in her hands as Lily continued to giggle.
The Next Morning
Olivia woke up feeling oddly restless. She had barely slept after last night’s conversation. Ethan’s teasing smirk, Lily’s innocent matchmaking and it all replayed in her mind. What was she even doing? She was supposed to be playing a role. Nothing more. But somehow, the lines had blurred. Shaking off her thoughts, Olivia got dressed for work and headed to the kitchen. Ethan was already there, flipping pancakes while Lily sat at the counter, happily kicking her legs.
"Good morning, Olivia!" Lily beamed.
"Morning, sweetheart." Olivia kissed the top of her head before pouring herself a cup of coffee.
Ethan glanced over his shoulder. "Sleep well?"
"Not really," she admitted, shooting him a look. "I wonder why."
Ethan grinned, flipping another pancake. "If you’re talking about last night, I’d say Lily has a point. We do make a good team."
Olivia rolled her eyes, taking a sip of her coffee. "You love messing with me, don’t you?"
"Absolutely," Ethan replied without hesitation.
Before Olivia could retort, Lily perked up. "Olivia, are you staying for the whole day today?"
Olivia hesitated. "I actually have to go to work soon, sweetheart."
Lily pouted. "Oh… but you’ll be back later, right?"
"Of course," Olivia reassured her.
Ethan leaned against the counter, watching her. "I can drive you to work."
Olivia shook her head. "That’s okay. I’ll take a cab."
"You’re refusing a free ride?" Ethan raised an eyebrow. "That’s a first."
"I just… need some space to think," Olivia admitted honestly.
Ethan studied her for a moment before nodding. "Alright. But I’ll pick you up after work."
Olivia hesitated, but eventually, she gave in. "Fine."
Lily cheered. "Yay! Daddy’s picking up Mommy!"
Olivia choked on her coffee. "LILY!"
Ethan just laughed.
Later That Day – At the Hospital
After dropping Lily off at kindergarten, Ethan made his way to the hospital for a routine check-up with his doctor. As he sat in the waiting room, his thoughts drifted to Olivia. Was she really thinking about them? About what he had said? He had never expected to fall for her like this, but now that he had, he wasn’t sure he could go back to pretending. Just then, the doctor called his name, pulling him out of his thoughts. He stood up and followed the nurse inside.
Meanwhile – Olivia at Work
At the office, Olivia found herself staring at her computer screen, unable to focus. Her coworker, Sandra, nudged her.
"Hey, you okay? You’ve been zoning out all morning."
Olivia sighed.
"Just… thinking about something."
Sandra smirked.
"Does that ‘something’ happen to be a someone?"
Olivia groaned, rubbing her temples.
"Is it that obvious?"
Sandra laughed.
"Oh, honey, it’s painfully obvious."
Olivia shook her head.
"I don’t know what to do, Sandra. This wasn’t supposed to happen."
Sandra leaned in, her expression turning serious.
"Then let me ask you something. Do you want this to happen?"
Olivia hesitated.
Did she?
She thought about Ethan’s warm smile, the way he made her laugh. The way he always looked at her like she was the most important person in the world. And then there was Lily; sweet, innocent Lily, who had already found a place in her heart. Maybe… maybe she did want this. But could she take that risk?
Later That Evening
As Olivia stepped out of her office, she spotted Ethan’s car waiting by the curb. He rolled down the window and flashed her a smile.
"Need a ride?" he asked playfully.
She sighed but smiled as she climbed in.
As they drove in comfortable silence, Ethan suddenly spoke. "So… have you thought about what I said?"
Olivia turned to him, her heart pounding.
"I have."
Ethan glanced at her, his grip on the steering wheel tightening. "And?"
Olivia took a deep breath, gathering her courage.
"Let’s take that chance."
Ethan’s lips curled into a slow, hopeful smile. "You sure?"
Olivia reached over, intertwining her fingers with his. "Yeah. I’m sure."
And just like that, something shifted between them. Something real. Something worth fighting for.
The car ride home was filled with a comfortable silence. Olivia kept stealing glances at Ethan, feeling her heart race after her bold confession. She had just told him she was willing to take that chance. To explore whatever was growing between them. And yet, now that the words were out there, she felt nervous. Ethan, however, seemed completely at ease. A small smile played on his lips as he focused on the road, one hand still holding hers.
"Are you hungry?" he asked casually.
Olivia blinked, caught off guard. "Uh… I guess a little."
"Good." He made a sudden turn down a familiar street.
It didn’t take long for Olivia to realize where they were going.
"The diner?" she asked, recognizing the small, cozy restaurant they had visited a few times before.
Ethan nodded. "I figured we could have a little celebration."
She raised an eyebrow. "A celebration for what?"
Ethan grinned. "For you finally admitting that you like me."
Olivia groaned, pulling her hand away. "I never said that!"
"You implied it," Ethan teased as he parked the car.
She rolled her eyes but couldn’t help the small smile forming on her lips.
Inside the Diner
The moment they stepped inside, the familiar aroma of freshly brewed coffee and grilled burgers filled the air. It was a warm and welcoming place, perfect for a casual dinner. They slid into their usual booth near the window, and Olivia absentmindedly tapped her fingers against the table. Ethan leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table.
"So, since you’re taking a chance on me, does that mean I can officially start wooing you?"
Olivia nearly choked on her water. "Wooing me?"
He smirked. "Yeah. You know, dates, flowers, grand romantic gestures. The whole deal."
She narrowed her eyes at him. "You’re ridiculous."
"And yet, here you are, having dinner with me," Ethan pointed out smugly.
Before Olivia could fire back a response, the waitress arrived to take their order. After ordering their food, Olivia leaned back in her seat and sighed. "You know, this whole thing is insane."
Ethan tilted his head. "Because we started as a fake couple?"
"Exactly." Olivia shook her head. "This was never supposed to be real. I mean, I agreed to help you for Lily's sake, and now… now things feel..."
"Real?" Ethan finished for her.
She hesitated before nodding. "Yeah. Real."
Ethan studied her for a moment, then reached across the table, gently taking her hand again. "Is that really such a bad thing?"
Olivia stared at their intertwined fingers, feeling her pulse quicken.
"...No," she admitted softly.
Ethan's smile widened, but before he could say anything else, his phone buzzed. He frowned and pulled it out of his pocket. The moment he saw the caller ID, his expression darkened. Olivia immediately noticed the shift. "What is it?"
Ethan hesitated before sighing. "It's Jessica."
Olivia felt her stomach drop.
"What does she want?"
Ethan clenched his jaw. "I don’t know. But I guess I’m about to find out."
With that, he answered the call.
Ethan’s grip tightened around his phone as he pressed it to his ear. His stomach churned as Jessica’s voice came through the line.
Jessica: “Ethan, we need to talk.”
His jaw clenched. It had been weeks since her last attempt to insert herself back into their lives.
Ethan: “What do you want, Jessica?”
Across the table, Olivia sat quietly, observing his reaction. The warmth they had shared just moments ago was now replaced by a tense, unreadable expression on Ethan’s face.
Jessica: “Not over the phone. Can we meet?”
Ethan exhaled sharply, rubbing his temple. He didn’t want to play this game with her. Not again.
Ethan: “If this is about Lily...”
Jessica: “It is.”
Those two words were enough to make Ethan’s heart pound. He hated that she had even a sliver of control over his emotions when it came to Lily.
Before he could respond, Jessica added, “It’s important. I wouldn’t be calling if it wasn’t.”
Ethan hesitated. Every part of him screamed not to trust her. But Lily was involved, and that changed everything.
Ethan: “Fine. Where?”
Jessica sighed in relief. “Tonight. At the café near your place.”
Ethan wanted to argue, to tell her no. But instead, he muttered a stiff, “I’ll be there.” and ended the call.
He placed his phone face down on the table, his mind spinning. Across from him, Olivia studied his expression carefully.
“Jessica?” she asked, her voice steady but tinged with concern.
Ethan nodded, running a hand through his hair. “She wants to meet. She said it’s about Lily.”
Olivia frowned, sensing the inner turmoil beneath his composed expression. “Do you think she wants custody?”
Ethan let out a humorless laugh. “She doesn’t have a case. She walked away, Olivia. She never fought for Lily, never showed up when it mattered. Legally, she has no claim.”
“Then why do you look so worried?”
Ethan sighed. “Because Jessica always has an angle.”
Olivia reached across the table and placed her hand over his. “Do you want me to come with you?”
Ethan looked up, surprised by the offer. He hadn’t expected Olivia to get involved in something this personal. A small part of him wanted to say yes. Having her there would make things easier. But at the same time, he knew this was something he had to handle himself. He squeezed her hand gently.
“I appreciate that. But I need to do this alone.”
Olivia nodded, though she still looked uncertain. “Just… be careful, okay?”
Ethan managed a small smile. “I will.”
But deep down, he had a feeling this wasn’t going to be a simple conversation.
Later That Night – The Café
Ethan arrived at the café a few minutes early, his hands stuffed into his pockets as he spotted Jessica sitting at a corner table. She looked the same as always; elegant, poised, and infuriatingly unreadable. He walked over, pulling out a chair across from her.
“Talk.”
Jessica stirred her coffee lazily. “No pleasantries, Ethan?”
“I don’t have time for games, Jessica. If this is about Lily, then say whatever you came to say.”
She sighed, setting her spoon down. “I want to see her.”
Ethan’s entire body tensed.
“No.”
Jessica expected that answer, but she wasn’t backing down. “You can’t just shut me out forever.”
“You shut yourself out,” Ethan snapped. “You left, Jessica. You made that choice.”
Jessica flinched at that, but she quickly recovered.
“I know I made mistakes. But I’ve changed, Ethan. I want to be in her life.”
Ethan leaned forward, his voice low and sharp.
“And what happens when you get bored again? When things don’t go the way you want? You think you can just come back and pick up where you left off?”
Jessica’s expression softened, her voice quieter now.
“I know I can’t undo the past. But I want to try.”
Ethan exhaled slowly, trying to keep his emotions in check. He didn’t trust her. He didn’t believe a single word she was saying. But he couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t over. Jessica had returned. And she wasn’t going away anytime soon.
