Episode Three: Growing Closer

2429 Words
It had been a week since Olivia had agreed to help Ethan with the "fake mom" routine, and the arrangement was starting to feel less like a charade and more like something real. The small moments of connection, the laughter shared with Lily, and the easy way Olivia stepped into their lives had all begun to blur the lines between pretense and something more. Olivia arrived at Ethan’s house that morning to pick up Lily for her usual after-school ice cream treat. The sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a warm golden hue over everything. She knocked softly on the door, the sound echoing in the quiet of the house. Lily’s voice floated from inside. “Mommy! You’re here!” Ethan opened the door with a smile, though it was a bit strained. His eyes were tired, but they softened when he saw Olivia. “Hey,” he greeted her, stepping aside so she could enter. Olivia smiled back, her heart fluttering slightly at the warmth in his gaze. She had gotten used to the routine of spending time with Lily, but today felt different. She was beginning to look forward to their outings more than she’d care to admit. “Hey yourself,” she replied, trying to sound casual as she stepped inside. Lily was already pulling on her jacket, her tiny hands working with determination. “I want chocolate ice cream today!” she exclaimed, her voice full of excitement. “You got it, kiddo,” Olivia said with a wink. She turned to Ethan. “You coming with us, or do you have a ‘doctor’ emergency?” Ethan chuckled softly, though there was an edge to his voice. “No, just work. But I’m actually glad you’re going with her. I need to catch up on some stuff.” Olivia hesitated for a moment before replying, feeling the shift in the air between them. “You sure you don’t want to come? We can leave room for the ‘grumpy dad’ vibe too.” Ethan raised an eyebrow, amused. “I’m not grumpy,” he said, though his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes. Olivia smiled gently, but her tone was playful. “You’re grumpy, but I’ll let it slide. Lily and I will go have our sugar-filled fun. You’ll survive.” As she left with Lily, Ethan lingered in the doorway for a few seconds longer than necessary, watching them walk down the driveway. His mind was filled with thoughts he wasn’t quite ready to unpack, but the pull he felt toward Nora was undeniable. He just wasn’t sure where it was leading. Later That Day At the ice cream shop, Olivia and Lily settled into a booth by the window, enjoying their sugary treats. Lily’s face was covered in chocolate smudges as she gleefully recounted her day at school, leaving Olivia in stitches as she listened. “Mommy, I made a picture for you today! It’s a flower,” Lily said proudly, holding up the piece of paper with crayon scribbles. Olivia took the picture, her heart melting at the sight of the colorful mess. “It’s beautiful, sweetie. I’ll hang it on my fridge when I get home.” Lily’s eyes lit up. “You’ll really put it on your fridge?” “Of course,” Olivia said, nodding seriously. “It’s the best picture I’ve ever seen.” They shared a smile, and for a brief moment, it felt like the most natural thing in the world. Ethan’s voice broke through her thoughts as he suddenly appeared at the counter. He had come in after finishing up work, but Olivia hadn’t expected to see him. “Hey,” Ethan said, walking over to the booth. “I couldn’t resist. I figured I’d join you guys after all.” Lily immediately slid over to make room for him, her eyes wide with excitement. “Yay! Daddy’s here! Can I get more sprinkles?” Ethan laughed. “I think you’ve had enough sugar for today, kiddo.” Olivia, still a little surprised by his sudden appearance, looked up at Ethan. “You sure about this? We were just getting into the sugar rush.” He shrugged, sitting down next to Olivia. “Why not? Looks like fun.” Lily beamed, clearly happy to have them both there. As Ethan slid into the booth next to Olivia, she couldn’t help but notice how easy it felt to have him there, how natural their conversation flowed, as if they were more than just temporary partners in this strange little arrangement. She had expected to feel more like an outsider, but instead, she felt a part of their family. A Moment Alone Later that evening, after the ice cream had been devoured and Lily was tucked into bed, Olivia found herself sitting on the couch in Ethan’s living room, the sound of the television murmuring in the background. Ethan was in the kitchen, cleaning up after dinner. Olivia hadn’t expected to stay so long, but there was something comforting about being there, a quiet sense of belonging she hadn’t anticipated. When Ethan finally emerged from the kitchen, he paused in the doorway, looking at her. There was a hesitation in his gaze, as if he wanted to say something but wasn’t sure how to begin. “You okay?” he asked gently. Olivia looked up, meeting his gaze. “Yeah, just… it’s nice here. I’m glad you asked me to come along today.” He smiled, though it was a bit uncertain. “You’re not just saying that because you’re ‘helping’ with Lily, are you?” Olivia shook her head, her heart giving a little flutter. “No. I mean, I am helping, but it’s more than that. I like spending time with you both.” Ethan felt a jolt of warmth at her words. He wasn’t used to this being vulnerable, letting someone in. But with Olivia, it felt like the right thing to do. “I’m glad. I wasn’t sure how this was going to go, but I’m really… enjoying it.” Olivia smiled, her expression softening. “Me too.” They shared a quiet moment, the comfortable silence stretching between them, before Ethan finally spoke again. “I guess we’re kind of a family now, huh?” The words hung in the air, and for a moment, Olivia wasn’t sure if she had heard him right. He looked at her, his expression earnest. “Well, a fake one,” she said, trying to lighten the mood with a small smile. Ethan chuckled, but there was a depth to his gaze that made Olivia’s heart skip a beat. “Yeah, I guess so. But… maybe not forever.” Olivia’s breath caught. Did he mean…? Before she could respond, the sound of Lily calling out from upstairs interrupted the moment. “Miss Olivia! Are you coming to tuck me in?” Olivia laughed, grateful for the distraction. “I’d better go before she demands a bedtime story.” Ethan stood up, a soft smile tugging at his lips. “I’ll let you handle that. I’ll be right behind you.” As Olivia walked toward the stairs, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this simple moment tucking Lily in, spending time with Ethan wasn’t just part of the plan anymore. It was something real, and the question that hung in her mind as she headed upstairs was simple: Could she let herself fall for this makeshift family? Olivia walked up the stairs to Lily's room, her heart still pounding from the quiet moment she’d shared with Ethan downstairs. She shook her head lightly to clear her thoughts. She had no business getting caught up in her feelings for Ethan. This was supposed to be temporary a favor, a favor that benefited them both. But the way he had looked at her, the way their words had hung in the air between them, made her question her own resolve. Lily’s room was bright and colorful, filled with stuffed animals, toys, and books stacked haphazardly on shelves. The scent of lavender lingered in the air, likely from the little sachets Ethan used to keep the room smelling fresh. Lily was sitting on the bed, the covers pulled up to her chin, waiting eagerly. “Miss Olivia! You’re here!” Lily exclaimed, her eyes wide with excitement. “Are you gonna tell me the princess story again? Olivia smiled warmly, crossing the room to sit next to her. “Of course. I’m your personal princess story teller, remember?” Lily beamed at her. “I love when you tell it. You make the princess sound so brave!” Olivia laughed softly. “Well, she’s a very brave princess. Are you ready for another adventure?” Lily nodded eagerly. “Yes, please!” As Olivia began the story, her voice taking on the melodic rhythm that seemed to captivate Lily, she allowed herself to lose herself in the simple joy of the moment. She didn’t have to pretend to be anyone else here. She was just Olivia, telling a bedtime story to a little girl who loved her for it. Meanwhile, downstairs, Ethan sat in the living room, his mind racing. It wasn’t just the ice cream outing or the moments with Lily that had thrown him off balance it was the growing realization that he was starting to look at Olivia in a different way. She wasn’t just the woman helping him with his daughter anymore. She was someone he was genuinely enjoying spending time with, someone who made him feel like he wasn’t carrying the weight of his world on his shoulders alone. His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps coming down the stairs. Olivia appeared in the doorway, her face soft and peaceful after the bedtime ritual. Ethan looked up, his gaze lingering on her a little too long. “How’s she doing?” Ethan asked, his voice low. Olivia gave a slight nod, her eyes still on him. “She’s asleep. The princess is safe for tonight.” Ethan chuckled, but there was a quiet gratitude in his smile. “Thanks for that. You’re really good with her.” Olivia smiled, though her heart tightened a little at his words. “She’s easy to be good with. She’s a sweetheart.” There was an awkward silence that settled between them. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it was filled with the weight of unsaid things. The way their eyes met, how close they were standing, it made Olivia’s heart beat a little faster. She cleared her throat and stepped back, trying to regain some composure. “I should probably get going,” she said, her voice steady but tinged with a faint trace of uncertainty. Ethan nodded slowly, though there was a trace of reluctance in his expression. “Yeah, of course. I appreciate everything you’ve been doing, Olivia. I really do.” Olivia smiled, her heart doing a little flip at the sincerity in his words. “It’s no problem. I told you, I’m happy to help.” Before she could head to the door, Ethan took a few steps forward. “I don’t want you to think that this... arrangement... is only about Lily. I’ve been thinking, and I don’t want to make things awkward between us. I’m really glad you’ve been here for us.” Olivia blinked in surprise, her breath catching in her throat. “What do you mean by that?” Ethan hesitated, looking down at his hands before meeting her gaze again. “I mean… I don’t know if you’re feeling what I’m feeling, but... I don’t want you to think that I’m just asking for your help for Lily’s sake.” Olivia’s heart skipped a beat. The sincerity in his voice made her feel like she was standing on the edge of something bigger than she had ever intended. She opened her mouth, unsure of what to say, but before she could respond, Ethan added, his voice lower than before: “I think I’m starting to care about you, Olivia.” The words hung in the air between them, thick with emotion. Olivia’s breath caught in her chest, her mind racing as she tried to process what he had just said. She had known something was changing, but hearing him say it out loud made everything feel more real, more dangerous. “I... I care about you too, Ethan,” she said softly, her voice barely a whisper. “But...” Ethan took a step closer, his expression earnest and gentle. “But what?” Olivia took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “I wasn’t expecting any of this,” she said, her voice a little shaky. “I came here to help you with Lily, and now… I don’t know what this is. I don’t know if I’m ready for something more.” Ethan nodded, his gaze soft but understanding. “I get it. I really do. I don’t want to rush anything either. But I want you to know that I’m not just grateful for your help. I’m grateful for you.” The sincerity in his words made Olivia’s chest tighten, a mixture of emotions swirling inside her. She had come into this with clear boundaries just helping out, no strings attached. But now, standing here with Ethan, she couldn’t deny the connection she was starting to feel. She took a step back, not because she wanted to distance herself, but because she didn’t know how to handle the pull she felt toward him. “I’m not sure where this is going, Ethan. I don’t know if we can just... pretend to be a family.” Ethan gave her a small, understanding smile. “Neither do I. But I’d like to find out.” Olivia looked at him, her heart racing with uncertainty but also something warmer, something that had begun to grow quietly in her chest. “I guess we’ll see, then.” Later that Night As Olivia drove home, her mind kept replaying her conversation with Ethan. His words echoed in her head, and the way he had looked at her so honest, so open, made her heart race. She had agreed to help him, but somewhere along the way, her feelings had become tangled up in the mix. She wasn’t sure what was next, but for the first time in a long time, she felt like maybe, just maybe, she was starting to believe in something more.
