The morning air was crisp as Ethan parked his car in front of Olivia’s apartment. He checked the time. It was 7:30 AM. He was running slightly early, but given Olivia’s strict punctuality, he doubted she would mind. He knocked on her door, adjusting the strap of his bag. The plan was simple: he would pick her up so they could go together to Lily’s school event. It was just another step in their ongoing charade. When Olivia opened the door, she looked surprised. "You’re early."
Ethan smirked. "And you’re already ready. Impressive."
She rolled her eyes. "I hate being late. You should know that by now."
He followed her inside as she grabbed her bag. The apartment was neat, almost too neat, except for a single coffee cup on the counter.
"You don’t have to drive me every time, you know," Olivia said, adjusting her cardigan in the hallway mirror.
Ethan shrugged. "It’s part of the deal. Plus, Lily would be suspicious if we arrived separately."
"Right, because we’re supposed to be a happy family," she said, the sarcasm clear in her tone.
Ethan chuckled. "Exactly. Ready to fool a bunch of kindergartners?"
Olivia sighed, picking up her purse. "I suppose so."
At the School Event.
Lily ran towards them the moment they arrived. "Mommy! Daddy! You’re here!" She grabbed both their hands and pulled them toward her classroom, her face glowing with excitement. Ethan smiled, gently squeezing her tiny hand. He glanced at Olivia, who gave a small, hesitant smile in return. The kindergarten was lively, filled with parents chatting and children running around. Olivia took a deep breath, reminding herself that she was just playing a role. But as Lily tugged on her hand, pointing out drawings on the wall, she found herself enjoying the moment more than she expected. The teacher clapped her hands.
"Alright, parents! Thank you for coming! Today, we’re going to start with a small family craft session. Please take a seat with your child."
Ethan and Olivia sat down at a small table with Lily, who excitedly handed them colored paper and glue. "We’re making a family tree!"
Ethan raised an eyebrow at Olivia. "Didn’t expect arts and crafts, did you?"
"I work with medical charts, not glitter glue," Olivia muttered, staring at the supplies.
Lily giggled. "Mommy, you can do it! I’ll help!"
The words ‘Mommy’ still made Olivia pause, but she forced a smile and nodded. "Alright, let’s do this."
As they worked on the project, Ethan stole a glance at Olivia. She was focused, carefully cutting out leaves, her expression softer than usual. There was something about watching her with Lily that made his chest tighten.
When their tree was finished, Lily clapped her hands. "It’s perfect!"
Olivia laughed. "I wouldn’t call it perfect, but it’s something."
Ethan leaned in. "It’s missing something."
She raised an eyebrow. "What?"
He took a marker and wrote ‘The Best Fake Family’ at the bottom.
Olivia nudged him. "You’re impossible."
"And you love it," he teased.
She rolled her eyes but smiled, shaking her head.
A Surprise Visitor.
Just as the activity ended, a familiar voice cut through the cheerful atmosphere.
"Ethan."
He froze. Olivia turned her head slightly, her eyes landing on Jessica, standing by the door, arms crossed, looking less than pleased.
Ethan sighed. "Jessica, what are you doing here?"
Jessica’s eyes flickered towards Olivia before settling back on Ethan. "I wanted to see Lily. I didn’t realize you’d already made yourself a new family."
Olivia stiffened, feeling a sudden discomfort in the pit of her stomach.
Ethan’s jaw tightened. "Jessica, now is not the time for this. We’re here for Lily."
Lily looked between them, her smile fading. "Mommy?"
Jessica crouched down, brushing Lily’s cheek. "I just wanted to see you, sweetheart. Mommy misses you."
Lily hesitated. "Then why don’t you come to my events? Daddy and Mommy Olivia always come."
Jessica’s face hardened. She stood up, directing her gaze at Ethan. "We need to talk. Alone."
Ethan sighed, glancing at Olivia. "Take Lily for a bit?"
Olivia hesitated before nodding. "Of course."
As she led Lily away, she could feel Jessica’s gaze on her, sharp and unyielding. She knew this wasn’t going to be an easy conversation.
Confrontation.
Ethan and Jessica stood outside the school, tension thick in the air.
"So, this is what you’ve been doing? "Playing house with some woman?" Jessica scoffed.
Ethan’s expression darkened. "This isn’t about us. It’s about Lily. You left, Jess. You made that choice."
"I didn’t think you’d replace me so quickly."
"I didn’t replace you. Lily needed someone to be there for her, and you refused. Olivia stepped up."
Jessica folded her arms. "And what happens when this little charade of yours ends? When she walks away? What will you tell Lily then?"
Ethan clenched his jaw. "Olivia isn’t like that. She cares about Lily."
Jessica scoffed. "Right. And you don’t have feelings for her?"
Ethan hesitated. The answer wasn’t as simple as he wanted it to be.
Jessica sighed. "I just… I don’t want Lily to get hurt. If this is just pretend, be careful."
Ethan rubbed the back of his neck. "I appreciate the concern, but I think you lost the right to dictate what’s best for Lily when you walk away."
Jessica exhaled sharply, looking away. "Fine. Just… take care of her."
She turned and walked away without another word, leaving Ethan standing there, staring at the ground.
A New Realization.
When he walked back inside, Olivia and Lily were sitting together, laughing over something. Seeing them like that made something shift inside him.
Maybe Jessica was right. Maybe this was dangerous.
Because this fake family? It was starting to feel way too real.
Continuing the Evening.
That evening, as Ethan dropped Olivia off at her apartment, he hesitated before she could step out.
"Hey," he said, his voice lower than usual. "Thank you for today. I know it’s not easy dealing with Jessica."
Olivia sighed. "I agree with this, Ethan. I can handle it."
"I know. But still… I appreciate it."
She studied him for a moment before nodding. "Good night, Ethan."
As she shut the door and walked inside, Ethan sat in his car for a long moment, gripping the steering wheel.
This was supposed to be simple. A temporary arrangement.
So why did it feel like something much more?
Back in her apartment, Olivia paced the living room. The events of the day were replayed in her mind: Jessica’s sudden appearance, Lily’s innocent words, and the way Ethan had defended their ‘fake’ arrangement. Her heart ached in ways she couldn’t quite understand. She had agreed to this as a temporary solution, but today, standing beside Ethan and Lily, hearing Lily call her ‘Mommy’ so naturally, she realized something terrifying. She was getting attached. To Lily. To this routine. To Ethan. And that was dangerous.
She let out a slow breath, rubbing her temples. "This isn’t real, Olivia. Remember that."
But no matter how many times she told herself that, the truth was undeniable. It was starting to feel real. And she had no idea how to stop it.
As Ethan drove away from Olivia’s apartment, he couldn’t shake the image of her sitting with Lily, laughing and bonding over the craft project. It was supposed to be simple. A fake family. A temporary arrangement until they figured out what to do with the mess that was his life. But as the moments passed, he realized that something had shifted. His thoughts kept returning to Olivia, to the way she had so easily slipped into the role of mother to Lily, as though she had always been there, as though it came naturally. He thought back to their conversation with Jessica. The look in Jessica’s eyes. Hurt, confused, maybe even a little bitter, that made Ethan question everything. He’d told Jessica that this wasn’t about them, but was it really just about Lily? Or had something deeper started to stir? The way Olivia had looked at Lily was so gentle, patient, so much more than what he had expected. The way she had smiled when Lily showed her the family tree, the subtle warmth she tried to mask with sarcasm. It was the way she had stood by him. Not because she had to, but because she genuinely cared. He felt a mix of gratitude and... something else. Something he couldn’t quite name. And then there was that moment outside the school when Jessica had confronted him.
"What happens when this little charade of yours ends?" she had asked, and it lingered in his mind. What if this wasn’t just pretend? What if this... feeling was becoming more than a game? He couldn’t ignore it anymore. The growing connection he felt for Olivia, the way his heart sped up when she smiled at him, the warmth in his chest when she laughed at his stupid jokes. He’d dismissed it at first. He told himself it was nothing. It's just part of the arrangement. But now, in the quiet of the car, as he made his way home, he had to admit it: He was starting to want more. More than a fake family. More than pretending for Lily’s sake. He gripped the steering wheel tightly, the realization settling heavily on his shoulders. This wasn’t going to be simple anymore. As he turned onto his street, he found himself wondering if he was ready to deal with what came next or if it would change everything he thought he knew about love, family, and what it meant to be a father. The night stretched ahead of him, but all he could think about was the woman who had suddenly, without warning, become a very real part of his life.
The front door slammed behind Jessica as she entered her apartment, the sound reverberating through the empty space. She didn’t care. She was too frustrated to care about anything right now. Her apartment was quiet, cold even, with only the dim light from the streetlamp filtering through the blinds to illuminate the space. She walked into the living room, tossing her purse onto the couch and letting out a deep, irritated sigh. It had been a long day. A day full of unresolved tension, with Ethan at the center of it all. Her thoughts drifted back to the school event, to the way Olivia and Ethan had looked so... natural together. She hated the way Olivia looked at him, with that soft smile on her face, the one she reserved for people she actually cared about. Jessica had seen it before, years ago, when they were still together. The way Ethan’s eyes softened when Olivia laughed, the way he responded to her in a way that made it seem like they’d known each other for much longer than just a few weeks. She couldn’t help it. Her stomach twisted at the thought of them. Ethan was hers, or at least, he had been. But now... now, it felt like he was slipping away, like someone else was taking his place in his life and in their daughter’s life. The image of Ethan and Olivia together was hard to shake. They looked like a real family. A family that didn’t need her. Jessica paced back and forth in her living room, her fingers running through her hair. She had never wanted this. She had never wanted to be the one to walk away. But she had made that choice. It had been her decision, and now, she was living with the consequences. But did Ethan have to make it look so easy? Did he have to move on so quickly? The bitter taste of jealousy rose in her throat, and she grabbed the first glass she could find, pouring herself a generous amount of wine. She leaned against the counter, her thoughts swirling. She had wanted to be the one to tell Lily that she loved her. She had wanted to be the one at those events, to be the one holding her hand, guiding her through those milestones. But here she was, the outsider. The woman who had abandoned her daughter. Was that what this felt like? Was she really the villain in this story? Jessica closed her eyes for a moment, taking a slow sip of wine. She wanted to hate Olivia. She really did. It would make it easier. It would make the reality of what was happening easier to accept. But as much as she tried to push it away, there was a part of her that couldn’t help but see Olivia’s sincerity. Olivia wasn’t trying to replace her, wasn’t trying to make things more complicated. She was just trying to help. But why did it have to be him? Her mind replayed the conversation outside the school. She had asked Ethan if he had feelings for Olivia. She had needed to hear him deny it, to tell her that it was all just pretend. But instead, he had hesitated. The silence between them had said everything. That hesitation? It wasn’t nothing. It meant something. Jessica set the glass down on the counter, a sharp pang of sadness gripping her chest. She wasn’t sure if she was more hurt by the fact that Ethan might be falling for Olivia, or by the fact that she had been so quick to walk away from him in the first place. Would he ever forgive her for leaving? Would he ever understand why she did it? Or was this what their life had come to about? Her fighting for scraps of a relationship with him while he moved on with someone else? Jessica’s thoughts wandered again to Lily. Her daughter was so small, so innocent. She didn’t deserve any of this confusion. Jessica had failed her. But was there still a way back? Could she still fix the pieces of her life she had broken?
For the first time in a long while, Jessica felt the weight of what she had done the real consequences of her choices. She wasn’t sure where to go from here. She wasn’t sure if she even had the right to try and reclaim what was slipping through her fingers. Her heart clenched as she thought of Lily, and for the first time, Jessica allowed herself to admit something she hadn’t fully realized until now.
She missed them.
