It was as if it were a home base, or a mother to them. The thing approached Luis, paused, and stared at him. Around its face, Luis saw rainbow halos. Alnalah-nee-nahnahnah, the thing said into his mind. Luis stumbled back. Lemnah-gah-nahnah? It asked. Its bizarre resonance filled Luis with nausea. He recognized what he was facing. This was madness. This was intelligence without intelligence. Something had expanded the neurologi-cal capabilities of this creature.
