35 PHARMAKON, PHARMAKON The man blinked out of existence again. He appeared sticking sideways out of a col-lapsed checkout counter. Then disappeared again and appeared upside-down, embedded in a ceiling light fixture. Then he appeared in front of Luis and rushed him. Luis stumbled back and pushed a crushed shopping cart in Bloomquist’s path. Taking two steps towards the door, he stepped on a can of beans. The can flew at the wall and he fell flat on his back. Bloomquist tossed the cart and loomed over Luis. Luis, anticipating a lunge, hoped his jiu-jitsu was not too rusty, or too terrestrial, for this attack. Then the look in Bloomquist’s eyes changed. Bloomquist suddenly registered fear, surprise, and confusion, which was quickly replaced by those beams of light Luis was told about.
