chapter three:eyes in the shadow

429 Words
The following Monday, Emma returned to Halston Academy a private prep school where her last name held weight and her future was practically pre-written. Her heels echoed through the marble halls, and though her face was calm, her heart raced with the weight of secrets she couldn’t share. No one could know about Noah. Not here. Not with the cameras, the whispers, the daughters of CEOs and sons of governors watching her every move. But someone was watching. Not someone... appropriate.” Emma’s hands trembled slightly, but she held her mother’s gaze. “His name is Noah. And I love him.” Silence. Then her father entered, face like stone. “End it. Tonight.” Emma stood. “No.” “You don’t get to say no,” her mother snapped. “You want to throw away your future for a boy who changes tires?” “He listens. He sees me. He doesn’t *use* me.” Her father’s voice cut in cold and final: “If you walk out that door to see him again... don’t come back.” Emma’s breath caught. Noah’s words echoed in her mind: *Then we fall together.* And for the first time, she realized—she might really have to. ---
