Episode 6: Two Cages, One Key

"My lady! It’s him! The rogue from the village!" a Kuze soldier shouted. Hotaru raised her hand, signaling her men to hold their positions. She dismounted her horse with effortless grace, her crimson-and-white robes rustling in the breeze. She gripped the long scabbard of Frost-Bite. "Stay back. This one is mine." She walked forward alone, stopping ten paces from Shinnosuke. The wind blew through the clearing, carrying cherry blossom petals from a wild tree nearby. "They say you call yourself Shinnosuke Asuka," Hotaru said. "A dangerous name to carry in these lands. The Asuka were completely eradicated." Shinnosuke slowly raised his head, his intense amber eyes meeting her deep, icy blue eyes. For a brief moment, time seemed to stop entirely. A strange, inexplicable spark of recognition flashed between them—a shared burden of weight, grief, and duty. "Names don’t die easily when they are written in blood, Lady Kuze," Shinnosuke replied. "I know who you are. The princess of the house of murderers." "My father brought order to this province," Hotaru countered. "The Asuka were weak, divided by old traditions. War chose its victor." "Order?" Shinnosuke scoffed. "Go look at the starvation in Ouka. Go look at the mass graves in the valley. If that is your father’s order, I will gladly bring chaos." Hotaru drew a deep breath, her stance shifting into the Shattered Glass iaijutsu opening. Her left hand held the scabbard at a precise angle, her right hand resting on the long hilt of Frost-Bite. "Then let us see if your blade matches the weight of your words, Ghost of Asuka." "Come," Shinnosuke said. Hotaru moved first. She struck with the speed of lightning—a classic draw-and-s***h iaido technique. Frost-Bite flashed out of its scabbard, a silver crescent aiming directly for Shinnosuke’s neck. Shinnosuke anticipated the blinding speed. He dropped low, his blade ringing against hers as he parried upwards. The sheer force of Hotaru’s strike pushed him back two steps into the dirt, his sandals digging deep trenches. Hotaru didn't give him room to breathe. She used the incredible length of her odachi to unleash a flurry of devastating vertical cuts. CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! Shinnosuke blocked desperately, the notches on his sword sparking violently against her pristine blade. He realized her strength was immense despite her slender frame. Shinnosuke changed tactics. He barked a fierce kiai yell and changed to his unorthodox inverted grip. He stepped inside her guard, swinging his blade like a dagger, aiming for her armored shoulder. Hotaru’s eyes widened. She used the long wooden scabbard in her left hand to block his blade while pivoting her body out of harm's way. They found themselves locked chest-to-chest, blades crossed between them, staring directly into each other’s eyes. Their breath escaped in hot white puffs in the cool forest air. "Your style... it’s not just the Asuka school," Hotaru breathed. "It’s wild... feral. Where did you learn to fight like this?"
