Chapter 5 – The Beginning of Control

410 Words
Back in the present, Elena woke up to the sound of the rain tapping softly against the windows. She hadn’t slept well. Her dreams had been filled with him — Dante, as always, like a shadow looming over her every thought. The weight of his presence was still in the room, and when she looked at the empty side of the bed, she knew he had been there. Even if just for a moment. A knock on the door broke her from her thoughts. “Elena,” his voice called from the other side. “We need to talk.” The command in his tone made her body tense. She didn’t want to face him, didn’t want to deal with the mess he’d dragged her back into, but she knew she had no choice. She opened the door, and there he was, standing tall in his usual suit, like a man who owned the world. “You should eat,” he said simply, stepping inside. “We have a long day ahead of us.” “I’m not here to play your games, Dante,” she said, her voice betraying more emotion than she intended. “I’m here to figure out who’s after you and why my name is involved.” He smirked, that damn smirk that made her stomach tighten. “You’ll find out soon enough.” He led her to the dining room, where an elaborate breakfast was laid out on the table. The golden cutlery, the crystal glasses — it was all so extravagant, a stark contrast to the tension in the air between them. Elena took a seat at the far end of the table, deliberately keeping distance between them. But Dante didn’t sit at the other end. He moved closer, his eyes never leaving hers. “I don’t need your help, Dante,” she said firmly. “I’ve been away from your world long enough.” “Oh, but you never really left,” he replied, his voice low and almost affectionate. “You may have walked away from me, Elena, but you’ve never truly escaped.” She felt the familiar pull inside her, the one she hated. “You’re wrong,” she said, trying to hide the crack in her voice. “I’m free.” He laughed softly, standing up and walking around the table, his gaze always on her. “I’ll be the judge of that,” he said. “You’ll see.”
