Chapter 5 — “Beyond the Recording

Chapter 5 — “Beyond the Recording” The cold dampness spreading through the Haveli’s basement felt like an unfinished grave. Every drop of water dripping onto the stones felt as if a clock were running in reverse—as if time was turning back. Asha gently paused the recording device. Sonia’s voice was still echoing in her ears. “If I disappear, remember—this necklace was not a gift of love; it is the key to this secret…” Ranveer remained silent. He stood holding the amulet—the very same amulet that had opened the door to this maze. “She knew,” Asha whispered. “Sonia knew she was going to be killed.” The old portraits hanging on the basement walls seemed to be listening to them—pale faces, faded smiles, and eyes… that knew everything. Ranveer spoke softly, “If she was truly carrying evidence against a high-ranking official… then this matter is far bigger than just this village.” Asha nodded. “And that is exactly why this has been buried for years.” They approached a long register placed on a stone stand in the middle of the gallery. It contained hundreds of names—some crossed out, others marked with red ink. “Who are these people?” Ranveer asked. Asha turned the pages slowly. “The village’s old landlords, businessmen, police officers, panchayat members…” Ranveer’s face hardened. “It means Sonia wasn’t alone. She had become part of a massive conspiracy.” Suddenly, the sound of footsteps came from above. Both of them froze instantly. The Haveli… was not empty. Chapter 6 — “Those Who Knew” The sounds were coming from the upper floor. Heavy footsteps, as if the person knew someone was downstairs. Ranveer whispered, “Someone is following us.” Asha’s heart was pounding loudly. “Or someone wants to see what we have found.” They quietly moved into another corridor of the basement. There was a small wooden door there—locked with a rusty padlock. Suddenly, the amulet in Ranveer’s hand began to heat up. “This opens with the amulet too…” Asha said. As soon as the lock opened, they found another room inside—small, but the walls were covered in papers. Old government documents, case files, and newspaper cuttings. Asha’s eyes fixed on one cutting: “Young Social Worker Sonia Sharma Missing — Police Investigation Underway” The date… was that very night. Below it, a small handwritten note read: “If these papers are found, know that the truth is still alive.” Ranveer’s voice became heavy. “She was gathering evidence. Against every man involved in that dirty deal.” Asha picked up a file. One name appeared repeatedly: State Development Officer — K. S. Rathore She said, trembling, “This man is still in office.” At that exact moment, a voice came from above: “Found you… I knew you would come here.” Chapter 7 — “The Man” A long shadow descended the stairs. In the torchlight, a familiar face emerged. The village’s most respected man—Harishankar Chaudhary. “You two are very curious,” he said with a smile. “Sonia was just like that.” Ranveer’s blood ran cold. “So, you knew?” Harishankar slowly entered the room. “Knew? No, son… we decided it.” Tears welled up in Asha’s eyes. “You people killed her?” Harishankar looked at the photos on the wall. “Sometimes, it is necessary to silence certain voices… for the peace of the village.” Ranveer clenched his teeth. “And that officer?” Harishankar’s eyes were cold. “Everything was fixed from the top.” Suddenly, someone slammed the door shut from behind. They were trapped. Chapter 8 — “Sonia’s Last Night” Harishankar played another recording. Sonia’s voice: “I am going to the Haveli tonight. If this is my last message… remember, the truth is in this register…” Then a scream. Then… silence. Asha broke down. Ranveer’s fists were trembling. Harishankar said, “Now, you two are on the same path.” Just then, a strong wind blew outside. The windows of the Haveli burst open. And somewhere in the distance… police sirens echoed. Harishankar was startled. “How is this—?” Ranveer smiled and said, “Sonia wasn’t alone. And neither are we.” But the r eal danger was yet to come. Because Rathore… was still free.
