Chapter 9: Buried Beneath the Sand
The door didn’t simply swing open. It seemed to pause, as if listening.
Asha had the distinct feeling that someone—or something—was standing right behind that old wooden panel, holding its breath, debating whether to grant them entry or not.
Ranveer’s fingers grazed the iron latch. It wasn’t cold to the touch—it was damp.
“This moisture...” Ranveer murmured, “it isn't water.”
Realization washed over Asha. A chilling line from the diary flashed in her mind:
“The Haveli doesn’t absorb blood... it preserves it.”
With a sudden shove, Ranveer pushed the door open.
The Chamber Within
It wasn’t really a room. It looked more like a subterranean labyrinth—crooked walls and a ceiling so low they had to hunch over to walk.
Covering every surface were handprints.
Small ones, like a child’s. Slender ones, like a woman’s. Marks left by people who had frantically clawed at the stone in their final moments.
Asha couldn't make a sound; her throat felt constricted.
“Here...” Ranveer whispered, looking around, “people were imprisoned here.”
“No,” Asha breathed out, “people were chosen here.”
The First Sound
Suddenly, the sound of shifting sand broke the silence behind them. Ranveer swept his flashlight across the room.
In the corner, something was stirring beneath the dunes.
“Is anyone there?” he called out.
No answer—just the soft hiss of sliding sand.
Asha stepped forward and began digging frantically with her hands.
“Asha, wait—” Ranveer warned, but it was too late.
A face emerged from the grit.
The eyes were wide open but devoid of life. The mouth hung half-open, as if the last breath was still struggling to escape.
Asha stumbled back in horror.
“It... it's dead,” Ranveer said grimly.
“No,” Asha’s voice trembled, “it is unfinished.”
The Law of Sacrifice
Words were etched into the wall—carved deeply by fingernails.
To save one, three must be given.
Ranveer ran his hand over the carving. “What kind of rule is this?”
Asha pulled out the diary, her hands shaking uncontrollably.
“This Haveli doesn't belong to a person,” she said. “It stands on a pact.”
Ranveer looked at her, confused.
“With the sand,” Asha explained. “Decades ago, when the great drought hit... when people were dying... someone asked for help.”
“From whom?”
Asha looked up. “From the earth itself.”
The Haveli’s Hunger
Above them, the wind began to howl violently. Below, the walls started to vibrate.
“The Haveli knows,” Ranveer said.
“Knows what?”
“That we understand the truth.”
Asha’s eyes darted across the walls, recognizing a pattern in the scrawls—pictures, names, ages.
Every ten to twelve years.
And every time... a woman.
“Ranveer...” Asha’s voice was barely audible, “The next name...”
Ranveer didn't need to ask. He knew the answer.
“It's mine.”
The Door Closes
Suddenly, the entrance they had come through slammed shut on its own.
Absolute darkness followed.
Then came the sound of footsteps. Not just one pair, but many. Yet, the beam of the flashlight revealed nothing.
“What... what is happening?” Ranveer stammered.
The sounds drew closer. Asha squeezed her eyes shut. The whispers began:
“Don't stop...”
“We stopped...”
“The sand did not spare us...”
Ranveer grabbed her hand tight.
“If we want to survive,” he declared, “we have to break the rules.”
“Breaking the rule,” Asha realized, “means we cannot let another person die.”
The First Revelation
In the darkness, a section of the wall suddenly slid open.
Behind it lay a hidden, narrow chamber. And inside that chamber... a living person.
Withered, frail, but breathing.
His eyes locked onto Asha.
“You...” he rasped, his voice dry, “I have been waiting for you.”
“Who are you?” Asha demanded.
He offered a weak, exhausted smile.
“The one who survived the last time,” he replied. “And the one who will now... tell you the truth.”
End of Chapter 9 (The Dark Cliffhanger)
Above, the Haveli groaned in protest. Below, the sands shifted restlessly.
A truth lay exposed—one that, if revealed, wouldn't just destroy the mansion, but could swallow the entire village.
But the haunting question remained:
Should the truth be brought to light... or are some secrets meant to stay buried beneath the sand?
