“I was born to two lowly witches who left their coven in fear. They had just found out they were pregnant. What should have been a joyous time was filled with horror. My mother found out she was pregnant with twins. Now, normally twins would have been a celebration. Not this time. A Full Blood Moon was awaiting in the near future, all the witches were dreading this occasion due to a prophecy that befell the Supreme witch.
“She awoke one night in a cold sweat and warned the coven that a great evil would be born to a witch on the night of this Blood Moon. The greatest evil would also be born with the greatest good. My mother found out she was blessed with twins. The coven heard of this news and tried to force an abortion upon my mother. Her and my father fled in fear that their babies would be taken from them.” She looked off in the distance as a tear escaped her eye and fell to her lap. She took a deep breath and continued on.
“They escaped and hid from the coven until the night of the Blood Moon. My mother passed in childbirth. My father raised me and my sister alone.”
“Wait, you are a twin? We have an aunt we don’t know about?!” Marsi yelled at her tear stricken mother. “Why didn’t you tell us?”
“With good reason, you ungrateful child! If you’d been listening, you’d know that one of us is the greatest evil. Does that look like me?” Nina asked in anger.
“Right now, yea,” Marsi whispered to herself. Nina just glared and went on.
“Anyway! As the years went on, evil and darkness seemed to follow my sister. She was always in trouble, always making the wrong decisions. She radiated power, but she couldn’t harness it for anything good. She grew jealous that my life was becoming so great. I met your father, Forrest. He told me I was his mate and showed me his wolf. I begged him to turn me so we could spend eternity together. He refused until I found out I was pregnant.
“I ended up losing that child. Only a wolf is strong enough to carry a wolf pup.”
Marsi interrupted again, “We have a sibling? Do you know if it was a boy or a girl?”
“My wolf, Starr, told me it was a girl,” Nina was sobbing at this point. I stepped over to her and wrapped her in a hug. No one deserves to lose a child. Especially because you’re just the wrong species. She patted my back and pulled away.
“Wow, we have a sister,” Marsi smiled at Nick. His lips turned up in a half smile as if he wasn’t as moved by this as she was, but I could feel his sadness for his lost sister.
“That’s when your father decided it was time to turn me. He didn’t want us to suffer through that ever again. The next full moon, he changed me. I was sick for three days. He thought my body was rejecting the change. Then, on the third day, I changed into a full wolf. Starr emerged. She felt my pain and sorrow. She took off into the woods and howled all our pain into the night sky. Your father’s wolf, Asher, followed. We ended up making love in the forest that night. That’s when we conceived you two, my miracle twins.”
“Okay, mom, way too much detail,” Nick fake gagged and made the room laugh. “What does all this have to do with Clara?”
“I’m getting there, kid. You need to know the full story to understand the importance of you two mating. All was well throughout my pregnancy. You guys were growing great, I was fully coming into my Luna position, life was perfect. Until my sister found out about my pregnancy.
“I hadn’t heard from her in years until then. She visited and begged for me to give her one of my pups. I refused, called her crazy, but she just kept begging. I had no idea why she would want one of you. Now, keep in mind I am not a divination witch, I’m a sigil witch, a spell caster. One night, I woke up in a cold sweat. I had the same dream I believe our Supreme witch had.
“My sister and I were born under a red moon, she was born dark, me born light. She was covered in an evil shadow commanding an army of corpses. She conquered the supernatural world until the next Blood Moon, when I was shown in all my light glory giving birth to two beautiful pups.”
“Hold on, we were born under a Blood Moon too?”
“Yes, Marsi. You and your brother were the greatest good I was supposed to bring into the world. It had nothing to do with me, and everything to do with you. However, I have no idea how that is supposed to play out. All I know is that Marsi, you are the Dark, and Nick is the light.”
“Great,” Marsi threw her hands up in frustration. “I’m the bad, Nick is the good. As always!”
“Marsi, get over yourself. Darkness does not mean evil and light does not mean good. I hope you’re both on the good side. You need both to be whole.”
“So we have an aunt and a sister we never knew about, we were born under a Blood Moon, and we somehow fit into a prophecy about taking this witch down? Is there anything else you’re leaving out?” Nick asked.
Nina squirmed in her seat and looked away guiltily. “Mother!”
“Oh alright! That brand you have, the one I said we gave you when you were a small pup? That was given to you by my sister.”
“What?!” He growled. He stood so fast his chair flipped backwards. He bent over his
desk, pressing his palms flat against the hard surface. “What. Does. It. Mean?” He asked between clenched teeth. Nina squirmed in her seat again. She almost looked terrified of her own son.
“It’s a prophetic seal. It basically suppresses your power. My sister believes you’re the one who can get rid of her, so she put that on you to prevent you from coming into your full power.”
Before Nick could lash out like I felt he wanted to do, I spoke up. “I’ve seen it before, too.”
“What?” Nina asked. “Where?!”
“My mother had one on her left breast. In the same spot Nick has one. I never knew what it was, or what it meant.”
“Oh no. . .” Nina trailed off.
“Let me guess, this is why Clara is so important?” Marsi sneered at me. Does this b***h want to fight? Because I will fight.
Calm yourself, Clara. You may have a flame burning inside you but that is no excuse for your counterproductive anger, said the voice that wasn’t Lynna.
Who are you? I asked feverishly.
I am Salana, daughter of the Sun.
When she spoke her name I felt my eyes burn. The whole room went from glaring at Marsi to gazing at me. “Your eyes!” Nick shouted. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine, why?” I looked around into all their faces. Nick was worried, Nina was unphased, Maverick and Galvin were scared, Harmon was eerily interested, and Marsi looked pissed.
“You should learn to show your Luna respect.” Salana demanded in her ashy voice. Marsi’s jaw dropped. She straightened her shoulders and looked me straight in the eyes.
“My apologies, Luna. I meant no disrespect.”
“Whoa, Clara’s wolf is mighty powerful,” admired Galvin. I shook my head and the burning in my eyes stopped.
“That wasn’t Lynna, that was Salana,” I informed them.
“Who? Are you saying you have more than one other spirit inside you?”
“Yes, Marsi. Lynna is my wolf, Salana is my phoenix, Daughter of the Sun.”
“This could not get any weirder, can it?” Maverick quired.
“It’s about to,” Nina spoke up. “Her eyes are not the only thing that burn when Salana is awakened.”
I pinched my nose in frustration. Although I didn’t know the reason behind it, this is exactly what I was trying to keep secret last night.
