“Rue,” Nick waved over the nurse standing in the corner. “I want you to keep watch over her body. Something tells me she’s no ordinary wolf and I intend to find out what she is.” Rue nodded and took a seat near the bed, although not close enough to be burned by the heat radiating off of her.
Nick left the room reluctantly. He gave her one last lingering look before closing the door. He headed down the hallway and ran right into the man he was looking for. “Harmon, thank the Goddess. I need you to research what she is. Find out whatever you can about wolves with high body heat, or whatever the f**k that was. Come to me as soon as you find anything helpful. Get any omega you can to help you research.” He nodded and walked away toward the library.
Harmon was always a good student. He carried that into his adult life. Although the pack Beta is supposed to oversee administrative duties and pack training with the Gamma, Harmon wasn’t cut for that. His mate, Marsi, took on those Beta duties. She was more fit to fight. Harmon took on the education of the pack. He planned the school curriculum and taught a few classes.
Nick needed to speak to his mother about what happened only a few hours ago. He left the keep and strolled around the castle ward looking for a very dominant woman in black.
He spotted her near the south tower helping to clear the damages. He hadn’t realized before how bad it was. A vast majority of the tower was gone. The entire middle section on the right was blown to bits. A few warriors were pulling bodies from the wreckage. A pile was already being made. He looked away in horror.
“Nina.” He nodded at his mother. She glared at him.
“You know very well that I refuse to speak to you when you call me that. I am your mother, address me as such,” she demanded.
He smiled at her. “Hello mother, what happened? Why did the witch attack us now?”
“I haven’t the slightest idea,” she replied too fast. Her eyes darkened like she was keeping a secret.
“Mother?”
She only sneered at him and ordered another warrior to set up the funeral pyre. “I will handle the funeral arrangements. We will mourn our dead at dusk. Give the families plenty of time to say goodbye,” she paused sadly. “Then we will plan for the witch's capture.”
Nick nodded in agreement and looked down sorrowfully. His mother noticed his depressed demeanor. Of course the death of pack members would sadden the Alpha, but there was more to his sorrow. “Are you okay, my sweet boy?”
He shook his head as the tears started to fall freely. He turned from her and looked towards the skyline, watching as it began to brighten in preparation for the rising sun.
“She’s going to die unless I figure out what she is,” he cried. She grabbed his arm and dragged him to an alcove in the castle wall.
“What do you mean she’s going to die? You just found her! What happened?”
“The second we stepped through the threshold, she passed out. McCoy couldn’t find a pulse, then her body began heating up. She was hotter than a fireplace when I left Rue in charge of keeping an eye on her. Flint told me she isn’t just a wolf? What does that mean?” he cried in frustration.
“Son, I believe Flint is telling you she’s like us. Just like I am a witch turned werewolf, and you and Marsi are werewolves with light and dark magic inside you, she is something mixed with a wolf,” she paused in thought. “You said she was burning up?” He nodded while wiping tears from his eyes.
“I know what she is.” Nina looked to the skyline as the sun was just beginning to show. The storm had temporarily subsided, leaving the air clear of snow and ice.
Nina grew up in a witch family. Her father had always wanted her to be uber aware of all things supernatural. She had read thousands of books on different species. She knew even the most rare of creatures.
“Go back to the hospital room, your mate is waiting for you.” He shot up and ran as fast as he could to the hospital room. He bumped into Harmon on the way but just shoved him to the side.
When he arrived at her room, he threw the door open and met the most beautiful oceanic eyes he has ever seen.
