Chapter 29: Second Encounter

The cold weather made Russell tuck his hands inside his pocket. It’s already winter when he came to Denver, Colorado yesterday. Within the month of waiting, the renovation of the building they acquired is still not ready. It still needs two weeks for him to fully occupy the building and announce the ribbon cutting. That’s why he decided to roam around the city while he waits. He obviously just can’t stay in his condo the entire week. Russell went inside a local department store to sightsee but ended up buying his necessities. He was already on the cashier when a man currently in a call lined up behind him. He doesn’t want to listen to the conversation but he can’t cover his ears, can’t he? “I’m pretty sure it’s not the local police. Those fat assess doesn’t have such refined work. They always come late, always.” The man paused, probably listening to the person from the other line. “Tsk. Fine. I just even reached back home. Book me the flight tonight then. I’ll go to-” Russell was not able to hear more from that man as he was already finished. He went straight to his condo. After organizing his newly bought things, he sat on the living room and turned on the television. The news showed a replay of the Philippines’ local news yesterday. ‘Human trafficking exchange was stopped by the local police of Manila.’   ----- Tanya’s I received an invitation for investment companies gathering. I was staring at the invitation letter in front of me while I am giving it a thought. I am pretty sure that Samantha will be there, too. Can I manage to look at her after everything that happened? Wait. When was the last time I talked to her, actually? Right. It was that very first day I woke up in this world. I don’t even remember how Samantha was, even from our previous world. I just despise her now. That’s all I know. “You can choose on not going Miss, only if Mr. Collins is still around.” Gilbert spoke when he noticed me at daze. “But I’m pretty sure it will cause a discussion between the people if no one from the leading company will attend. You know. They might think we’re…” “Arrogant.” I finished the sentence in his behalf. I sighed. “I know. I know. Can you call Opal inside then? I’ll make her prepare my outfit for that annoying gathering. I’m not really good for such things.” Gilbert bowed and went out. When he came back, Opal is already with him. I told Opal my references and after picking clothes online, we finally decided on what to buy. Two days later, I am now in front of the venue greeting the medias that are flocking me in the entrance. Thanks to Monty and Morty’s help, me and Gilbert finally able to step into the insides of the venue without a scratch. Geez. I am still not used to this even though this is not my first time. The medias are crazy! I have been in contact with people like them back in my old world but that’s only when I catch thief, pushers, or hold uppers. Not like this! It’s like I’m some famous celebrity. “Are you okay Miss?” Gilbert asked when she saw how my face grimaced. I’m pretty annoyed and it shows in my expression. I sighed then forced myself to smile. “I’m now fine. Let’s go.” I ordered and all of them followed me inside. The night almost ripped my lips open. I smiled here and there like I’m some politician. How can Russell managed gatherings like this? Damn! I should’ve not let him transfer to US. “You were so lucky to sign with Hong Sua, Tanya. My husband here always brags on how amazing you are on handling your companies as well as choosing your subordinates. Especially the Collins siblings. Those two surely are dependable, right? I’m jealous.” One old lady along with her husband suddenly came to our table while I was resting for a while and talked like that after introducing themselves. I looked at Gilbert to ask for help. I already spent hours of dealing with a number of fake people. I am now at my limit. Gilbert understood my stare and immediately butt in. “I’m sorry Mr. and Mrs. Santos but the night is already old and the Miss is now a bit tired. If you would excuse us, we wish to go home now. I’m really sorry.” “Oh! Really? Oh no. Sure. Sure. Thanks for your time Tanya.” The old lady said. I stood slowly and bid goodbye to both her and her husband. When I turned around, I clearly heard her scoff at me. The feeling is mutual old lady, okay? How can you call me by my name just like that? I don’t even know you for P’s sake! “Going home already?” I heard that voice on the side said. Without looking, I can clearly recognize that voice. My hands clenched. I really wished that I will not bump into her until I went home but I guess that wish was blown by the wind. I turned on my right and faced the person I once missed but now loathes to the bone. Just like me, she has three people behind her. One woman and two men. “Ms. De Dios.” I called her formally. “Nice seeing you. And about your question, yes. I am now going home. I suddenly don’t feel okay so I will take my leave ahead. I believe that is not prohibited, right?” I spoke as calmly as possible. I tried my best to show that the tension between us is just about business and nothing else. “Oh! You’re calling me Ms. De Dios now? I remember you calling me something else though, almost 5 years ago. Hmmm, if I remember correctly. Was it…Manty?” She asked. I was taken aback for a moment. How can she still remember that day? Damn it. I gritted my teeth. It took me a few seconds before giving her a reply. I faked a chuckle first. “Yeah. I did call you that. But it was just a mistake. I was still having a hang over that day and mistook you for someone else.” I lied. I noticed that we are currently gaining attention so I bowed my head a bit to her. “I know that it’s already a long time ago, but let me apologize for such mistake. I don’t even remember that day vividly. I’m glad you reminded me about it.” I said and smiled “apologetically”. Before she could extend the tensed conversation, I took the initiative and bid goodbye at her. “I really wish to chat further more with SD Ventures’ CEO but I am really not feeling well. I wish you good night then, Ms. De Dios. I will not take my leave.” I said and without waiting for her response, I walked my way out. When I reached my car, that was when I cursed badly.
