*SAGE*
As the fog rolled in, the temperature dropped to a terrible chill.
A shiver rushed up my spine from the cold dark feeling that forced itself into our safe haven.
Wolfy’s big ears perked up immediately and he gave a viciously loud growl, warning me of the danger I felt in my bones.
I stood up quickly with Wolfy jumping up beside me.
My breath was visible now, and I could feel the hatred in waves moving towards us.
Wolfy gave another warning growl before he nudged me with his head, pushing me in the opposite direction.
I felt his need to protect me and keep me safe. His feelings let me know he had a problem with dying for me if necessary.
He wanted me to leave. Save me from the impending danger. I shook my head no.
“I don’t know what it is boy, but I know I don’t wanna leave you. I can’t explain it but… I already love you. I... I don’t wanna lose you.” I said while searching his eyes for understanding.
He whined and gave me another nudge as tears began to form in my eyes.
His love for me was pouring into my soul. I knew I would miss this feeling.
This may have been a dream but the emotions he emitted felt as real as the heart pounding my chest.
He growled again, turning to look behind him, and gave me a harder nudge until I staggered backward.
“OKAAAYYY.. okay. I’ll run... but promise me...”
I lowered my voice to a whisper as I pulled down his head to touch my forehead. My heart broke as I closed my eyes.
“Promise me that you’ll be OK.... you’ll come to find me again... Please.”
Wolfy gave a low groan and a lick to my face before nudging my bottom with his head one last time and turning to
crouch into a defensive stance.
I gave one last lingering look before I ran into the forest.
THIS is where all of my nightmares started.
THIS I remember.
THIS I was used to.
My heart raced fast as I pushed past all the branches and jumped over fallen logs.
I heard a loud roar in the distance and I could only hope that Wolfy escaped in time.
I didn’t want him to stay and fight whatever the hell was always after me. Wolfy was new to this.
I looked behind me only to see the same fog from the clearing coming after me.
This was new.
Usually, it was a dark cloaked entity with long claws reaching for me.
The shock almost made me lose my balance as I stumbled on a root that stuck out of the ground.
I caught myself quickly and continued after seeing it-what the hell! I had to do a double-take.
The damned fog had turned blood-red. Not only that, but it was forming into clawed hands reaching out for me.
I tried to keep going, but the harder I pushed myself, the more exhausted I became.
I had no choice but to duck behind a tree to catch my breath and get a look at my surroundings.
The moon was high and full tonight.
This nightmare was definitely different.
It was always complete darkness.
This time it was as if the brightness shining from the moon was trying to guide me.
However, before I could take one step on the newly lit path in front of me, the fog wrapped around my body like vines trapping me to the tree.
I struggled against it only for it to tighten its hold.
“AAAARRRGGGHHH!!!”
I screamed angrily,
“WHAT THE HELL IS THIS! LET ME GOOOO!”
I hate being weak and unable to defend myself!
“This isn’t real. Breathe Sage. It’s just a nightmare. Wake up.”
I rasped, trying to calm myself down. I squeezed my eyes shut and shook my head back and forth.
“Please wake up... WAKE UP, WAKE UP, WAKE UP!!!”
I screamed. Nothing worked and I was starting to lose it. So I started to throw my head back against the tree.
*thud*...*thud*....*thud.
“Arrrgggg”
Great, now I’m growling.
I start to feel a little light-headed, but I continue throwing my head back. I bite my bottom lip so hard, I can start to taste blood.
“It’s...just...a...stupid...dream.”
With every syllable, I throw my head back again.
My eyes widen as suddenly more red fog rushes angrily towards me as it forms into two hands.
One wraps around my throat, causing me to stop my efforts to cause myself pain. The other holds a finger to my lips.
“Shhh..sh. Sh.sh...shhh. Stop this nonsense, my love.”
A voice says.
It sounds as if it was right next to my left ear. I stilled immediately.
This is the first time it's a voice in any of my nightmares.
The voice has only ever snarled or hissed at me.
While momentarily distracted, the finger moved to caress my cheek as if we were intimate lovers.
All the while, I can’t move my head away because the fog's other hand is holding me still.
“I’ll be with you soon. Unfortunately, I have to deal with this MUTT you seem to have invited into our playground.”
The fog hissed angrily. I shut my eyes in refusal. He was definitely pissed if I had to guess from his tone.
“Killing him for your honor will be my pleasure. No one claims what’s MINE!!!”
Just then, I heard a pained whine in the distance.
My eyes snapped open angrily.
I felt heat start to rise in my chest with the unbridled anger I felt.
It spread throughout my body, and in my anger, I didn’t notice my veins glowing blue through my skin or the fog sizzling that was wrapped around me.
“Don’t you dare hurt my Wolfy! Leave... US...ALOOOOOONNNNEEEE!”
I screamed as I felt a force flow through me and then out of me.
“IMPOSSIBLE!”
It spat angrily as all the fog disintegrated and light burst out of me.
The last thing I heard was a howl, and I felt the earth quaking all around me.
Something was approaching fast.
Too bad it won’t make it to me before I take my last breath, I thought as my body crumbled to the ground and gave in to
total....
Darkness.
