Sam POV
After finishing our meeting, we head out the back of the pack house to start our search. I am able to steal a glance at our SUV and see Cooper standing there alone. Disappointment seeping into my bones. He didn’t find her. Why? Something must be off.
‘You worry too much you know that?’ Tate my wolf chuckles, ‘Cass said moon goddess is up to something, so calm down.’
I exhale slowly. I have got to focus on this farce of a search for my alpha. I keep Jeremy under my watchful eye, I want to see his reaction when we arrive at the place Cooper described. I mind link Charlie telling him take the lead on picking up the scent. He and his wolf Thesus, excel in tracking. Many packs have tried to get him to join up with their own, fortunately for us, Charlie is extremely loyal. He can be a bit bull headed at times as well.
In unison everyone starts shifting. Charlie’s chocolate and tan wolf howling, taking the lead. In a short time, we are at the place described by Coop. His old dried-up blood caked all across the once green grass. Not far from the puddle sits a rock, covered in the same blood. Allowing Charlie a moment to assess the scents, I shift back into human form. The others follow suit.
Nobody seemed to realize Jeremy isn’t with us. I noticed when everyone else shifted, Jeremy snuck behind some shrubs back at the pack house. Waiting for everyone else to become aware of his absence has been trying on my nerves.
Finally alpha Jonathan seems to have caught on. Running a hand through his salt and pepper hair he asks aloud, “Has anyone seen that nephew of mine?”A few murmurs of confusion and no’s erupt from the crowd. A sigh leaves his lips. “Gary?” He says turning to the man on his right with expresso brown hair and beard, “Can you go see what he is up to? Please be discreet.”
His blue eyes looking at his alpha with knowing, “Yes alpha. As you wish.” Upon noticing me watching Jonathan pulls me aside. “I hope we find your alpha soon. There is much I would like to discuss with your ranking members. Not here and not now.” A lop sided smile spreads across my face. Something is up and he might need our help.
Before I can probe further, Charlie is back in human form ready to give his report. “Well?” I ask sounding hopeful. Pointing a long tanned finger towards the blood pile, “That definietly belongs to alpha Cooper.” A few gasps emerge from some of the search party members. Charlie’s green eyes meeting my grey ones. “Go on.”
“I’m sure you all have figured out by now, our alpha was hit from beind.”
“How can you be sure it was from behind?” A younger man with dirty blonde hair pipes up.
“Because our alpha is a smart fighter. He would have to be taken by surprise. As I was saying, he got hit from behind by an unknown female. If I’m not mistaken, the scent over there”, his long finger pointing not far way from the blood pile, “belongs to none other than future alpha Jeremy.”
A few growls can be heard. Everyone rushing to the scent to see for themselves. More growls and confused babbling amongst the men begin. “SILENCE!” Jonathan bellows. Instant quiet. Gesturing back to Charlie, “Continue young man.” Bowing his head respectfully before he continues. “Thank you alpha Jonathan. There are three more scents. Female. Two are ranked wolves, and the third is a young woman who does not carry the scent of a wolf.” Charlie makes his way over to some nearby brush. “They hid here. The wolfless female came to the group. I was able to scent her going over the cliff’s edge. I don’t see a body or blood so what happened to her is unknown. The other two females took off North. I can track them if you wish.”
His question hanging in the air. Jonathan and I exchanging looks, both wanting answers we nod in unison. The rando blonde guy pipes up again, “Should we send someone with this dude? He isn’t from our pack. Do you really want him wandering alone Alpha?”
‘Who is this prick?’ Charlie mind links.
‘Not sure, but I will be finding out.’
“I think it best he goes alone Daniel. We wish to not startle these women. They were hiding for a reason. I believe they won’t be so trusting with one man, let alone two.” An annoyed look splashes across Daniel’s face before he quickly covers it. “Yes alpha.” With a nod from Jonathan, Charlie is shifted and on his way.
We get back to the packhouse and Coop is still standing by the car looking stoic. After dressing we all agree we should wait a day to hear from Charlie. He may find the answers we seek. Either way Jonathan and I will promise to keep in touch. After we’re all loaded in the SUV and safely on our way, I give Coop a recap of the events and why Charlie is missing. I mention Jeremy sneaking away during our shift. He in turn mentions seeing him lurking around the packhouse before taking off in the direction of his own pack.
I pass along alpha Jonathan’s want to meet up, how something seems off. Jonathan seems aware of that as well. He seems almost untrusting of some of his men. “We need to meet him tonight.” Coop has a determined look in his eyes.
