Charlotte had waited only until she saw the orderly hurrying toward them after phoning to say she had to leave urgently. Once he was close enough, she sprinted away. Her mother called after her but she had to run. Find her car. Drive away. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears as she wound her way back to the carpark.
She couldn’t remember which part of the key opened the hire car. Her handbag fell to the ground spewing the contents everywhere and she threw herself onto her knees to collect everything. The key fell under the car and she reached beneath, grasping for it as tears flooded her eyes. Her fingertips touched metal and she sank further, dropping her forehead onto the tarmac and letting the tears turn to sobs.
