There was absolute silence in the car, as the driver kept on driving and glancing at his re view mirror each time he wants to make a turn, He was making sure there was no car following behind, in a way of being security conscious, he does these check only when he’s picking up Melissa from school, because anyone could attack them knowing that she is a rich man’s child, and would want to use that as a means of extorting money from her parents, by k********g her thereby putting him and his job at risk.
“Hey, are you okay?” Melissa asked looking at Leo whom she felt was a bit tensed.
Leo was startled by the question as he quickly nods his head in responses, letting Melissa know he was fine.
Melissa moved her hand and held Leo’s hand which was beside her, as she gave him a gentle pet.
“You have nothing to worry about, everything would be fine,” she assured him, and tries to cheer him up.
“I think this is a bad idea,” Leo voiced out, trying not to sound rude.
“What do you mean? Melissa asked surprised.
“Everything, you coming to my school and insisting I join you back home, what if you dad get’s to know about this, where do that leave me?” he asked not expecting an answer from Melissa.
Melissa was silent; she didn’t know what to say.
“I thought as much, now you’re seeing reasons with me,” Leo attests.
After a minutes of staying silent, Leo realized that he shouldn’t have talked to Melissa in that way, on seeing that she was moody and quite, he looked up and saw that the driver staring at them from the re view mirror.
“Hey, I am sorry,” Leo said.
“I just don’t want you to get into trouble because of me, this isn’t about me, you know I can take any punishment, but I wouldn’t want that for you,” Leo explained and draw Melissa closer to him, as she rest her head over his shoulder.
The car stopped as Leo raised her head from the position it was on Leo’s shoulder as she looked around and saw that they were some distances away from the main gate, she looked up to look at Leo who was by this time getting ready to come down from the car.
“We are here already?” Melissa said surprised, As though she never wanted the ride to end.
“Yeah,” Leo said taking a deep breath.
He saw how disappointed Melissa looked that he had to drop at that point
“Hey, you don’t have to look that sad, I will see you later this evening,” he assured her, and opened the car door as he came down.
The car moved as Melissa turned back to looked at Leo who was now walking down to the main gate from the point where they dropped him.
“You really like him?” Melissa attention was drawn back, when she had the driver’s voice.
“I love him,” she said immediately, not thinking about her answer twice.
“But you are just sixteen.”
“Seventeen, in a week’s time,” Melissa snapped.
“Okay, seventeen, and you’re not and adult still,” that driver said calmly.
“And even if you are, you know your parent won’t want you to be with Leo, judging from his back ground.
“I don’t care,” Melissa muttered.
“It will be a tough one,” the driver turned his head sharply and gave Melissa a quick glance as she focused his attention back on the road.
Melissa didn’t say a word, as she was eluded by her own thoughts, pondering over what the driver just said.
The car came to a stop, Melissa looked up and saw she was home already, she opened the car door, grabbed her school bag and came down, as she shut the door, she turned around and walked to the driver’s side.
“Thank you so much for taking me to Leo’s school,” she said to the driver who was still seated in the car.
“It’s nothing,” he smiled at her.
And watch Melissa walk into the house, before driving off to go park the car at the garage.
At the door one of the maids came over to help Melissa with her school bag, when she stopped her, and walked straight to her room.
Melissa was up stairs in her room all through that afternoon and didn’t come down for lunch; she only came down stairs to study when her home teacher came by for her lessons after which she crept back inside to her room.
It was by four that evening that Catherine noticed that Melissa haven’t been to the kitchen, she’s been so busy, with work at the kitchen throughout that afternoon.
“Have you seen Melissa all afternoon?” she asked one of the maids who was with her at the kitchen.
“Yes, I saw her while she came in from school, and served lunch for her, but she didn’t come down stairs to eat,” she explained.
“What! Why didn’t you let me know about this?” she asked, flashing the maid a worried look.
“I am sorry,” the maid apologized and continued with what she was doing.
“I will go check on her now, please keep an eye on the bread in the oven for me,” she instructed and left the kitchen.
Catherine walked up to Melissa’s room at tapped at her door.
“Hey, Melissa it’s me open up.”
Catherine waited for a second before the door opened.
“Hello Melissa,” she greets her.
“Good afternoon second mum, come on in,” Melissa said.
Catherine walked inside and watched Melissa as she took her sit on the bed.
“Please have your seat,” Melissa said to her pointing towards the couching.
“No, I am all sweaty and dirty from the work at the kitchen,” Catherine said.
“It doesn’t matter, please seat,” Melissa insisted.
“Okay,” Catherine shrugged and took her seat.
“Are you okay?” she asked Melissa.
“Yes, I am fine,” Melissa faked a smile.
“Why do you ask?”
“Because I was told you didn’t come downstairs for lunch,” Catherine points out.
“Yeah, I wasn’t feeling hungry,” Melissa said.
But Catherine saw the worried look on her face and knew all wasn’t fine.
“What is going on with you?” she asked Melissa.
“Is it about Leo, don’t worry he will be fine.”
“I will talk to him when I get home this evening,” she assured Melissa.
“Okay, please do, he is my best friend and I don’t want him to distance himself from me,” Melissa told Catherine.
“Just be fine, I need to go check on the bread at the oven, I just came to know how you are doing,” Catherine stood up and went over to Melissa who was still seating on the bed.
“Take care of yourself, and do come downstairs for dinner later,” she pets Melissa’s hair, smiled at her before leaving the room.
Melissa watched as she left the room, she lay down back on her bed, and took a deep breath, she can’t wait to see Leo later that evening, although she’s been thinking on how to go about it, knowing that a father would keep an eye on her, since he had discovered that she do sneak out at night.
With all that in Melissa’s mind, she decided to go home with Catherine later that evening and talk to Leo, rather than sneaking out of the house later that night, since her parents won’t be home early, she would just see Leo briefly and get back home before they return from work.
Melissa got up from her bed and grabbed her phone and tapped at the screen to check at the time, it was, it was five thirty in the evening, and Catherine will be going back home in less and forty five minutes.
With that Melissa quickly went to her wardrobe, took out a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt, since the weather was a bit cold outside, she put on the dress went to her mirror brushed her hair and left the room to go meet Catherine in the kitchen.
When she got to the kitchen Catherine was not there, she saw one maid doing the dishes, who didn’t notice her presences.
“Hello what about Mrs Catherine?” she asked.
“She stepped out,” the maid said, turning around quickly, on hearing Melissa’s voice.
Melissa knew that the maid was startled.
“I am sorry, if I startled you,” Melissa apologized.
“No, you didn’t,” the maid said, and gave her a smile.
Melissa knew she was lying, as she smiled back at her.
“Do you want me to get you anything?” the maid asked her.
“No, I am good,” she said and walked out the kitchen to go in search of Catherine.
On getting to the door at led outside, she saw Catherine entering the house.
“There you are, I was looking for you,” she smiled.
“Hey, you are down already, let me go get your food ready,” Catherine said, as they both walked back inside the house.
“I am almost done with my chores, will be leaving soon,” Catherine said still walking, with Melissa following behind her.
“That is the reason I came down, not to eat but to follow you home,” Melissa said sharply.
“What!” Catherine stopped and turned around immediately to look at her.
“But,” Catherine stuttered.
“There is no but,” Melissa cut her short, not wanting her to finish her statement.
“I know you’re scared about my parents, and I promise I won’t spend much time there, I will head back home before they get home,” Melissa promised.
Catherine was still trying to consider it, when Melissa held her hands.
“Please, second mum, please,” she made a crying face.
Catherine saw that Melissa was anxious, and wouldn’t want anything that would hurt her feelings, said okay.
“But you will spend just an hour,” she said to her.
“Yes, an hour,” Melissa repeated excitedly.
“Go get ready and meet me in that kitchen, I am almost ready,” Catherine told her.
“I am ready, we can leave already,” Melissa replied.
“What!” Catherine chuckled as she walked back to the kitchen to get the rest of her stuff and let the maid know that she was leaving.
Melissa waited for her at the entrance of the house so they can go together without anyone noticing.
“I guess I am done for today, so I am leaving,” Catherine said to the maid who was still in the kitchen washing the dishes.
“Oh, okay,” the maid said.
As Catherine grabbed her bag, and took off the apron on her body, she was about walking of the kitchen, when the maid told her that Melissa was looking for her.
“Yeah, I have seen her, thanks for letting me know,” she said.
“Okay, have a lovely evening,” the maid said as Catherine left.
“You too,” Catherine said ahead of her.
She met Melissa at the entrance of the back door, and they both walked out of the house and strolled down to her own apartment.
Leo after getting home that afternoon from school, did his home assignment and went to the garden at the back of the house to water his mothers crops, after which he prepared dinner, knowing that his mum would be so tried coming back home to fix dinner after working at the mansion.
He did all these to keep his mind busy in order not to think about Melissa or what happened between her dad and him the other night.
There was no doubt that he doesn’t so kind of strong feelings for Melissa, but he wouldn’t want to ruin his mother’s working relationship with Melissa’s family, she has worked for their family over twenty years now, long before he was born. Leo also leant that his late father was Melissa’s father’s personal driver before he died, so getting involved with his daughter would be a disaster which would cost his mum losing her job, and he wouldn’t want that to happen, so the best thing to do was to try as much as possible to avoid her.
