The sight of Cardinal Reginald Pole is pleasant to my eyes. He has done much to present a truly English form of Catholicism in our land, not ideally viewed by the Bishop of Rome but then, as I point out, we are not in Rome. He has held masses in St Paul’s, instructed the clergy to educate and explain the ways and paths of God and helped me so much in my bills still going through parliament to restore our country fully to true Catholicism. As the cardinal who came closest to being appointed as the next pope, he was the only true candidate to become our Archbishop of Canterbury, although he did not accept the offer lightly and had to be persuaded.
“I hope that I will fulfil that high office with due reverence and humility,” he says.
“We are sure that you will,” I assure him.
