Heresy and rebellion everywhere I look. Is there no end to the treachery of those subjects who favour the new English church? I have to look over my shoulder everywhere I move, even in the parliament house or talking to members of the privy council. It is a cold day for this time of year, although sunshine occasionally breaks through. What am I to do with so few people I may truly trust? I may spend time with my ladies but not long. Their conversation is, for the most part, bright and chirpy and I am unable to join in. If I am listless, as I usually am, I may go to my presence chamber and sit there alone, secure in the knowledge that none will come in to disturb me.
