Dusk painted the sky in bruised purples as Ella and Jax approached the forest's darker edge, trees twisting into forbidding shapes. The air grew cooler, heavy with the scent of rotting leaves and something metallic—blood? Ella's thigh wound pulsed, a reminder of the feral's claws, but Mara's herbs kept the pain at bay. Her wolf, still weak from the curse, perked up slightly, sensing change.
Jax stopped at a line of ancient stones, moss-covered and etched with faded warnings. "This is the threshold. Clan forbids crossing. Stories say it's where the visitors' curse started—ferals, madness, worse."
Ella touched one stone, fingers tracing a cracked moon symbol like her artifact. "That's why we're going. Answers beyond."
Jax eyed her, blue eyes reflecting the dying light. "You sure? Once in, no easy out. Ferals swarm, and... other things."
She met his gaze, defiance mixing with fear. "Rayne exiled me. Curse eating my wolf. No choice but forward. You?"
He hesitated, hand on knife. "Got my reasons. Family mess, like Mara hinted. But if we're doing this, team up. Watch each other's backs."
Ella nodded, a spark of trust igniting. "Deal. Lead on, rogue."
They stepped over the stones, the air shifting—thicker, charged. Birds stopped singing, replaced by eerie silence broken by distant snaps. Vines dangled like snares, roots tripped like traps. Jax moved silent, tracking skills sharp, pointing out pitfalls.
"Tell me about your family," Ella said, voice low to not attract attention.
Jax glanced back. "Not much. Brother in power, bad blood. Left years ago. You? Digging old stuff—why?"
"Curious. Dad taught me. Found bones twisted weird, carvings of stars falling. Rayne wanted details, then dumped me."
Jax's jaw clenched. "Sounds like he fears it spreading."
A growl rumbled ahead. Jax signaled stop. "Feral. Or more."
From bushes emerged three beasts—matted fur, red eyes glowing, veins bulging blue under skin. Virus-twisted, bigger than before.
"s**t," Jax whispered. "Circle us."
Ella's heart pounded. Wolf stirred, faint but angry. "Fight together."
Beasts charged. Jax knife out, slashing first's throat. Blood sprayed dark. Ella grabbed branch, swinging at second's legs. It stumbled, she stabbed trowel into eye. Beast howled, thrashing.
Third leaped at Jax, claws raking arm. He grunted, rolling, stabbing gut. Ella helped, kicking head. Together, downed it.
Panting, bloodied, they stood. Jax's arm bled, but he grinned. "Not bad, cursed one."
"You too." Adrenaline faded, bond formed in fight. "Thanks for staying."
"Team, remember?" But his eyes hid pain—arm? Or secrets?
Deeper in, ruins loomed closer. But growls echoed more. First attack, or warning?
Night fell, threshold crossed, dangers begun.
