THE GREAT PENTHOUSE JAILBREAK

Chapter 13: The Great Penthouse Jailbreak The atmosphere in the Thorne penthouse had shifted from "Romantic Gala" to "High-Security Prison" in under sixty minutes. Julian had locked himself in his office, the sound of his angry typing echoing through the hallway like a machine gun. Meanwhile, Aries was pacing her room so much she was worried she would wear a hole in the expensive Italian rug. But the real star of the morning was Ethan. Ethan did not do "brooding." He did "action." He sat in the living room, staring at the closed door of Julian’s office. "He thinks he’s the warden?" Ethan muttered, taking a massive bite of a leftover party croissant. "I built skyscrapers. I can get past a billionaire with a bad attitude." The "Strategic" Meeting Ethan marched to Aries’ room and knocked with his secret rhythm. When she opened the door, she looked like she had been crying, but Ethan shoved a plate of bacon under her nose. "Eat," he commanded. "We can’t plot a revolution on an empty stomach." "Ethan, I can't eat," Aries sighed, leaning against the doorframe. "Julian thinks my father is a criminal. He thinks I’m part of some grand conspiracy to ruin his family. If he finds the records from London, he’ll never look at me again." "First of all," Ethan said, pointing a piece of bacon at her. "Dad isn't a criminal. He’s just bad at math and too trusting of people with British accents. Second, Julian isn't mad because he thinks you're a spy. He's mad because he's a giant baby who has finally realized he has a heart, and now he’s scared it’s going to get stepped on." Aries blinked. "You think so?" "I know so. Now, put on your sneakers. We’re going to the office." "The office? Julian told us to stay here!" Ethan gave her a wicked grin. "Julian told the front door security to keep us in. He forgot that I knew the service elevator codes because I delivered the pizza last night when the regular guy couldn't get past the gate. We’re going to get the real files before his lawyers do." The Service Elevator Adventure Five minutes later, Aries and Ethan were squeezed into a tiny, metallic service elevator used for trash and laundry. It smelled faintly of bleach and old lobster shells from the party. "This is not how a 'Shield Bride' is supposed to travel," Aries whispered, trying to avoid touching the grimy walls in her silk loungewear. "It’s called 'Stealth,' Re-Re," Ethan whispered back, looking at his reflection in the dull metal. "I look like a secret agent. You look like you’re going to a very fancy nap." The elevator creaked and groaned. Suddenly, it jolted to a stop between floors. The lights flickered and went out. "Ethan?" Aries gasped in the dark. "Don't worry! I’ve got this!" Ethan fumbled with his phone flashlight. "I’ve seen this in movies. You just have to... hit the panel." CLANG! Ethan punched the control board. Instead of moving, a loud, pre-recorded alarm began to blare. “SECURITY BREACH. SERVICE ELEVATOR 4. PLEASE REMAIN CALM.” "Great job, Agent Ethan," Aries groaned, sliding down to sit on the floor. "Now we’re trapped in a trash elevator, and Julian is going to find us smelling like yesterday’s seafood." The Warden Returns Back in the penthouse, Julian’s phone buzzed. He looked at the security alert: Unauthorized use of Service Elevator 4. He groaned, rubbing his temples. He knew exactly who it was. He walked over to the service hall and pried open the outer doors. Looking down the shaft, he saw the light from Ethan’s phone. "Are you two finished being ridiculous?" Julian’s voice boomed down the shaft, echoing with a mix of anger and suppressed amusement. Aries looked up, seeing Julian’s silhouette against the bright hallway lights above. "We were just... checking the structural integrity of the lift!" she shouted back. "Yeah!" Ethan added. "It’s a safety hazard, Thorne! I should sue you for emotional distress!" Julian sighed. He reached down, his strong arms grabbing the edge of the elevator roof. With a grunt of effort that made his biceps bulge against his black T-shirt, he pulled the manual release. The elevator rose slowly until it leveled with the floor. He opened the gate and stood there, arms crossed. Aries stepped out, looking small and guilty. Ethan stepped out, looking ready to fight. "My office," Julian said. "Now." The Truth in the Dark They sat in Julian’s office. The framed photo of Aries’ father was still on the desk. "I didn't try to leave to run away," Aries said, her voice steady now. "I wanted to go to my father’s old storage unit. I have the current contracts from London. My father didn't shake hands with a criminal to help him. He was being blackmailed—just like I was." Julian stayed silent for a long time. He looked at the photo, then at Aries. The "Ice" was still there, but it was cracking. "My mother told me that your father was the one who gave the criminals the codes to our London branch," Julian said quietly. "If that’s true, Aries... it cost my family hundreds of millions. It’s the reason my grandfather became so cold. It’s the reason he doesn't trust anyone." "It’s not true," Ethan snapped. "Our dad can barely remember his own email password. You think he can hack a Thorne security system? Your mom is playing you, man. She’s using the one thing she knows will hurt you: your fear of being betrayed again." Julian looked at Ethan, then back to Aries. He saw the honesty in her eyes. He realized that if he chose to believe his mother, he would be safe and lonely. If he chose to believe Aries, he might get hurt, but he wouldn't be alone. "Fine," Julian said, standing up. "We go to the storage unit. Together. But Ethan?" "Yeah?" "If you punch me again today, I’m actually calling the police." Ethan laughed, slapping Julian on the back hard enough to make him stumble. "Deal, brother-in-law! Now let’s go. I’ll drive the truck. You guys can sit in the back and talk about your 'feelings' or whatever." The Thought Dive: Julian’s Realization As they headed to the garage, Julian watched Aries. She was talking to Ethan about which storage key it might be, her face full of determination. She isn't a spy, Julian realized. She’s a fighter. She’s fighting for her family just like I am. Maybe we aren't two different worlds. Maybe we’re just two people who were told we had to be alone to be strong. He reached out and caught her hand for a split second. "Aries," he whispered. She looked at him, surprised. "We’ll fix this," he said. It wasn't a kiss, and it wasn't a contract. It was a promise.
