THE SHADOW OF THE PAST

Chapter 7: The Shadows of the Past The silence in Aries' bedroom felt heavy, like the air right before a giant storm breaks. She sat on the edge of her bed, her eyes fixed on the phone screen that lay face-up on the silk covers. The video was still there, a digital ghost waiting to tear her life apart. In the video, she and Theo were laughing under a tree, his arm around her as he leaned in to whisper something that made her blush. It was a sweet, innocent memory from a time when her biggest worry was a final exam. But in the hands of Marcus and Natasha, that sweetness was now poison. “If you want this video to stay private, tell Julian to step down,” the email had said. Aries felt a cold shiver run down her spine. Her mind was racing, spinning like a wheel that wouldn't stop. They don't want to just hurt me, she thought. They want to cut the head off the Thorne Group. They are using me as the knife to stab Julian in the back. She felt a wave of guilt wash over her. She had spent so much time being angry at Julian for his past with Natasha, but now her own past was the thing putting him in danger. The Weight of a Secret Aries looked at her bedroom door. It was a thick, expensive piece of wood, but right now it felt like a thin sheet of glass. On the other side of that door was a world she was finally starting to understand. Julian was there, probably staring at his computer, trying to figure out how to be a "friend" instead of a boss. And Ethan was there, probably eating another giant sandwich and watching a sports game, ready to fight anyone who looked at her the wrong way. I can’t tell Ethan, she realized. He would go straight to Marcus’s office and end up in jail. And I can’t tell Julian. If I tell him, he’ll actually do it. He’ll step down just to protect my name. The thought made her heart ache. A few weeks ago, she would have said Julian only cared about power. But after the spaghetti dinner, and after the way he looked at her when he apologized, she knew better. He was starting to care. And that made him vulnerable. She walked over to the window and pressed her forehead against the cool glass. The city lights below looked like thousands of tiny diamonds, but she felt like she was trapped in a dark cave. I have to handle this alone, she whispered to her reflection. I am the "Shield Bride." I was brought into this family to protect his reputation. I won't be the reason he loses everything. A Breakfast of Lies The next morning, the sun was bright, mocking Aries with its cheerfulness. She walked into the kitchen, wearing a bright smile that felt like a heavy mask. Julian was already there, sipping his black coffee. He looked up when she entered, his eyes scanning her face with that sharp, CEO intensity. "You're up early," he said. His voice was less cold than usual, almost gentle. "Did you sleep well?" "Like a baby," Aries lied. The word felt like a stone in her mouth. Ethan walked in, yawning loudly and scratching his head. He was wearing an old t-shirt with a mustard stain on it, a sharp contrast to Julian’s perfectly tailored shirt. "Morning, Re-Re. You want some eggs? I’m making a 'Thorne-Slayer' omelet. It’s got everything in it." "No thanks, Ethan. I’m not really hungry," Aries said, reaching for a piece of dry toast. Julian put his coffee cup down. "Aries, you didn't eat dinner last night either. Is something wrong? Is it the project with Theo?" At the mention of Theo’s name, Aries’ hand shook, and a crumb of toast fell onto the counter. She felt both men looking at her. "I'm just stressed about the deadline," she said quickly. "Theo is coming over later to help with the data. We have a lot to do before the weekend." Julian’s face darkened slightly. The jealousy she had seen before was still there, simmering under the surface. "He seems to be spending a lot of time here lately." "He's a professional, Julian," Ethan interrupted, flipping an egg with a flourish. "And he’s a good guy. Not like some people who only think about stock prices." Julian ignored the jab, his eyes never leaving Aries. "If you need more resources, Aries, I can hire a whole team for you. You don't have to rely on... old friends." "I don't need a team, Julian. I need to do this my way," Aries replied. She felt a surge of frustration. She was trying to save his career in secret, and here he was, worried about a man who was now a threat to her safety. The Clumsy Detective As the day went on, Aries felt like she was walking on eggshells. She kept her phone in her pocket, clutching it every time it buzzed. She felt like she was carrying a live grenade. Julian, meanwhile, was having a hard time focusing. He sat in his glass office, but instead of looking at his spreadsheets, he was watching the hallway. He saw Aries walking back and forth, looking at her phone every ten seconds. She looked like she was waiting for a bomb to go off. She's hiding something, Julian thought. Is it Theo? Is she planning to leave with him? The thought made his stomach twist in a way he had never felt before. He had always been the one in control. He was the one who made the deals. He was the one who decided when things ended. But with Aries, he felt like he was constantly losing his balance. He decided to try something new. He had read an article once about "emotional intelligence"—mostly because his grandfather had sent it to him with a note that said "READ THIS, YOU ROBOT." He walked out of his office and found Aries in the living room, staring blankly at her laptop. "Aries," he said, clearing his throat. She jumped, nearly dropping her computer. "Julian! You scared me." "Sorry," he said, sitting down on the sofa across from her. He tried to make his face look "inviting," though it mostly just looked like he was confused. "I realized we haven't talked about... us. In a while." Aries blinked. "Us? Julian, we have a contract. We have a wall of glass between our rooms. What is there to talk about?" "The contract is just paper," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave. "But we are living in the same house. We are sharing meals. And... I don't want you to feel like you have to hide things from me." Aries felt a lump in her throat. He was being so kind, so open. It was the perfect moment to tell him. Julian, Marcus is blackmailing me. Help me. The words were right there, on the tip of her tongue. But then she pictured the headline: CEO RESIGNS AFTER WIFE’S SCANDALOUS VIDEO LEAKS. She couldn't do it. "I’m not hiding anything, Julian," she said, her voice trembling. "I’m just tired. Please, let’s not do this right now." Julian’s expression hardened. The "inviting" look disappeared, replaced by the cold mask of the CEO. "Fine. If that’s how you want it." He stood up and walked away, leaving Aries feeling more alone than ever. The Ghost Returns That afternoon, Theo arrived. Ethan let him in with a big smile, but the air changed the moment Theo saw Aries’ face. "Aries? What's wrong?" Theo asked as soon as they were alone in her office area. Without a word, Aries showed him the email. Theo’s face went pale. He sank into a chair, his head in his hands. "Oh no. Aries, I’m so sorry. This is my fault. If I hadn't come back, if I hadn't reached out..." "It’s not your fault, Theo," Aries whispered, sitting across from him. "Marcus and Natasha were looking for a weapon. They just happened to find us." "You have to tell Julian," Theo said firmly. "He has the power to stop this. He has the best security in the world." "No!" Aries said. "If I tell him, he’ll step down. I know him, Theo. He’s starting to feel responsible for me. I can’t let him ruin his life because of a mistake I made years ago." "Then what are you going to do?" "I’m going to meet Marcus," Aries said, her voice growing stronger. "He wants to play a game? Fine. I’ll play. But I’m going to do it on my terms." The Silent Watcher Across the hallway, Julian was standing behind his glass door. He couldn't hear what they were saying, but he saw the way Theo was holding his head. He saw the way Aries was leaning toward him, her face full of intense emotion. To anyone else, it looked like two lovers sharing a tragic secret. Julian’s hand gripped the doorframe so hard the wood creaked. He felt a fire in his veins that he couldn't control. It wasn't just pride. It wasn't just the contract. It was love. Real, terrifying, fated love. And it was hurting him more than any business loss ever could. "I won't let him take you," Julian whispered to the empty room. As the sun began to set over the city, Aries grabbed her coat and her phone. She looked at Julian’s closed door one last time, a tear slipping down her cheek. She walked out of the penthouse, leaving a trail of secrets behind her. She didn't know that Julian was already grabbing his keys to follow her. And she didn't know that Ethan was watching them both from the kitchen, his eyes narrowed as he realized that the "war" had finally moved inside their home. The clock was ticking. Three days. One video. And a love that was about to be tested by fire.
