THE MORNING AFTER THE WAR

chapter 9: The Morning After the War The sun rose over the city in shades of pink and gold, but inside the Thorne penthouse, the atmosphere was as thick as honey. Aries sat at the marble kitchen island, her hands wrapped around a mug of tea that had long since gone cold. She hadn't slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Julian standing in that dark office, telling Marcus that she was the only thing that mattered. He chose me, she thought, her mind spinning. He had the chance to let the video leak and stay as the CEO with no scandal. But he risked everything. Does that mean the contract is dead? Does that mean he actually… loves me? The word "love" felt heavy and frightening. She was a woman who liked plans and marketing strategies. Love was messy. Love was the reason her father’s business almost failed. But looking at the empty spot where Julian usually sat for breakfast, she felt a strange ache in her chest. The Grumpy Protector The silence was broken by the heavy thud of boots. Ethan walked into the kitchen, looking like he had been hit by a truck. His hair was a mess, and he was still wearing the same shirt from the night before, now wrinkled from his "victory sleep." "Tell me we have bacon," Ethan groaned, sliding into the seat next to her. "Saving sisters from billionaire snakes really works up an appetite." Aries smiled, reaching out to pat her brother’s hand. "Thank you, Ethan. For coming last night. And for not actually using that wrench on Marcus’s head." "I was tempted," Ethan admitted with a grin. He looked at her closely, his protective "big brother" eyes searching her face. "So. Are you okay? Really? That video… Thorne handled it, but seeing your past dragged out like that is a lot." Aries sighed, looking into her tea. "I’m okay. I just feel like a fool for trying to hide it. I thought I was protecting Julian, but I almost made things worse." "Thorne is a lot of things," Ethan said, his voice turning uncharacteristically serious. "He’s a shark, he’s stiff, and he spends too much on rugs. But last night? He didn't hesitate. I saw his face when we were driving over there. He looked like someone was trying to steal his lungs. I think the guy is far gone for you, Re-Re." Aries felt her face get hot. "Don't be ridiculous, Ethan. It’s the contract. He’s just protecting his investment." "Investments don't look at you like you’re the only source of oxygen in the room," Ethan muttered, standing up to search the fridge. The CEO’s Heart Just as Ethan started cracking eggs, Julian walked into the kitchen. The transition was instant. The air seemed to vibrate with tension. He was dressed in a charcoal-grey suit, looking every bit the powerful CEO, but his eyes were tired. When he saw Aries, he stopped. For a long moment, nobody said anything. Even Ethan stopped humming. "Good morning," Julian said. His voice was raspy, a low vibration that made the hair on Aries’ arms stand up. "Morning," Aries whispered. Julian walked to the coffee machine, but his movements were stiff. He felt like he was walking on a tightrope. Last night, he had let the walls down. He had admitted she was the only thing that mattered. Now, in the bright light of day, he was terrified. What if she thinks I was just being a hero? Julian thought. What if she still wants to go back to Theo? I saved her reputation, but I don't know if I can save her heart. He turned around, leaning against the counter. "I spoke to my grandfather this morning. He knows Marcus tried something, but he doesn't know the details. The board is quiet for now. The scandal is officially dead." "And Natasha?" Aries asked. Julian’s eyes turned cold for a split second. "She is being dealt with. She will never be allowed near a Thorne property or event again. Her 'friendship' with this family is over." He took a step toward Aries. "Are you… are you alright? You didn't say much in the car last night." Aries stood up, her heart racing. "I didn't know what to say, Julian. You saved me. You chose me over the company. I didn't think you would do that." Julian looked away, his jaw tightening. "I told you. The company is just glass. I realized that if I had all the money in the world but I had to watch you cry every day because of a lie, then I would be the poorest man on earth." Ethan made a loud, fake gagging noise from the stove. "Ugh! Too much sugar! My eggs are going to taste like syrup if you keep talking like that." Aries laughed, the tension breaking just a little. Julian glared at Ethan, but there was no real anger in it. The three of them had a strange bond now—the Billionaire, the Shield, and the Brother. The "Fated Love" Party Plan "We still have a problem," Julian said, regaining his professional tone. "Marcus is down, but the public still thinks our marriage is shaky because of the old photos Natasha leaked earlier this week. We need to prove them wrong. Permanently." Aries nodded. "The 'Fated Love' party. We planned it yesterday before everything went crazy." "We’re doing it tonight," Julian said. "A grand gala here in the penthouse. We invite the board, the press, and the elite. We show them that the Thorne marriage is stronger than ever. No more wings. No more separate lives." Aries felt a spark of excitement mixed with nervousness. "Tonight? That’s not much time." "I have the best event planners in the city on standby," Julian said. "You just need to do one thing for me, Aries." "What’s that?" Julian stepped closer, so close she could smell his expensive cologne—sandalwood and success. He reached out and gently tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. His touch was like a spark of electricity. "Wear the yellow dress," he whispered. "The one from the brunch. You looked like the sun. I want everyone to see what I see." Aries couldn't breathe. His eyes were so intense, so full of a deep, hidden longing that she felt like she was melting. "Okay," she whispered. "The yellow dress." The Thought Dive: Aries’ Internal Struggle As Julian walked out to handle the "business" of the party, Aries sat back down. Her mind was a whirlwind. He wants me to look like the sun, she thought. But I feel like I’m in the middle of a thunderstorm. If we go through with this party, if we show the world we are 'real,' then the lie becomes the truth. Can I handle being Mrs. Julian Thorne for real? Can I handle loving a man who spent his whole life being cold? She looked at her wedding ring. It was a beautiful, giant diamond. It was a symbol of a contract, but now, it felt like a promise. I'm falling for him, she admitted to herself for the first time. And I’m terrified that when the year is over, I won't be able to walk away. The Comedy of Preparation By noon, the penthouse was a disaster zone. Florists were carrying in thousands of white lilies (Aries’ favorite), caterers were arguing about the temperature of the champagne, and Ethan was trying to "help" by tasting every single appetizer that came through the door. "Ethan! Stop eating the truffle puffs!" Aries shouted as she ran past him with a garment bag. "I’m the quality control officer!" Ethan shouted back, his mouth full of pastry. "What if Julian’s fancy friends get poisoned? I’m doing them a favor!" In the middle of the chaos, Julian was in his office, but he wasn't working. He was staring at a small velvet box on his desk. Inside was a necklace—not a business gift, not something for the cameras. It was something he had bought weeks ago, back when he first realized that Aries was more than just a shield. Tonight, he thought. Tonight, I tell her the truth. No more contracts. But as the guests began to arrive and the music began to play, a mysterious figure stood in the lobby of the building, checking their watch. It wasn't Natasha. It wasn't Marcus. It was someone from Julian’s past that he had forgotten about—someone who held the key to why he was so cold in the first place.
