Chapter 10: The Uninvited Ghost
The penthouse was transformed. Thousands of white lilies filled the air with a sweet, heavy scent that masked the smell of the city below. Crystal chandeliers caught the light, casting diamond patterns across the floor where Julian and Aries had shared their first clumsy spaghetti dinner only nights before.
Aries stood in front of her full-length mirror, her breath hitching as she looked at her reflection. She was wearing the yellow silk dress Julian had requested. It flowed around her like liquid gold, cinching at her waist and falling to her feet. Her hair was swept up in an elegant, loose bun, and her skin seemed to glow under the warm lights.
I don’t feel like a "Shield" tonight, she thought, her fingers tracing the simple gold band on her finger. I feel like a woman who is waiting for her husband to tell her she’s beautiful.
She felt a flutter in her stomach that had nothing to do with the guest list of billionaires and socialites. It was the way Julian had looked at her this morning—with a softness that made her believe, just for a second, that the "one-year contract" was a lifetime sentence she actually wanted to serve.
The Brother’s Approval
A knock came at her door. "Aries? You ready? The vultures are starting to circle in the living room."
It was Ethan. He stepped inside, and for once, he wasn't wearing his muddy work boots. He was in a navy blue suit that Julian’s personal tailor had rushed over that afternoon. He looked uncomfortable, tugging at his tie like it was a noose, but when he saw his sister, he stopped moving entirely.
"Wow," Ethan whispered. He walked over and stood behind her, looking at her in the mirror. "Re-Re... you look... you look like Mom. She would have loved to see you tonight."
Aries felt tears prick her eyes. "Thanks, Ethan. You don't look too bad yourself. Just try not to punch any more CEOs tonight, okay?"
Ethan laughed, but his expression stayed warm. "I’ll try. But I’ve got my eye on Thorne. He’s been pacing his office for an hour like a nervous teenager. I think he’s finally realizing what he has."
The Gift of Truth
Aries walked out into the main hall just as Julian emerged from his wing. He stopped at the end of the corridor. His black tuxedo was perfect, his dark hair neatly styled, but his eyes were wide. He didn't say a word. He just stared at her as she walked toward him.
"You're wearing it," Julian said, his voice a low, rough vibration.
"I promised I would," Aries replied, her heart beating so fast she felt dizzy.
Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out the small velvet box she had seen on his desk earlier. He opened it to reveal a necklace made of a single, flawless yellow diamond. It was simple, elegant, and clearly cost more than most people's houses.
"This isn't for the cameras, Aries," Julian said, his voice serious. "I didn't buy this to show the board. I bought this because it reminded me of you. Because you’re the only thing in my life that isn't cold or grey."
He stepped behind her, his fingers brushing the back of her neck as he fastened the clasp. His touch sent a jolt of electricity through her body. He leaned down, his lips inches from her ear. "Tonight, we aren't actors. Let’s just be us."
Aries turned around in his arms, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. "Who is 'us', Julian?"
Before he could answer, the elevator doors at the end of the hall opened with a sharp ding.
The Shadow from the Past
The guests were already filling the main room, their laughter and the clinking of glasses echoing through the penthouse. But as Julian and Aries stepped out to greet them, the crowd parted.
A woman was standing near the entrance. She wasn't wearing a gown like the other guests. She was wearing a simple, expensive trench coat, her dark hair cut into a sharp bob. She looked remarkably like Julian—the same high cheekbones, the same cold, calculating eyes.
Julian froze. His hand, which had been resting protectively on Aries’ waist, turned ice cold. Aries felt him go rigid beside her.
"Mother?" Julian whispered.
The room went silent. Aries felt the air leave her lungs. Julian had never talked about his mother. She had heard rumors that Eleanor Thorne had left the family when Julian was a teenager, disappearing to Europe and never looking back. She was the reason Julian’s grandfather was so strict, and the reason Julian didn't believe in "fated love."
Eleanor walked forward, her heels clicking like a countdown on the marble floor. She didn't look at the flowers or the guests. She looked straight at Julian.
"Hello, Julian," she said, her voice like velvet and ice. "I heard you were playing house with a 'Shield Bride.' I thought I should come and see if the Thorne family had finally learned how to lie properly."
The Comedy of Chaos
Ethan, who was standing by the bar with a plate of appetizers, squinted at the newcomer. "Wait... is that the woman from the old paintings? The one who ran away?"
Julian didn't answer. He looked like he was thirteen years old again, standing in the middle of a storm.
"What are you doing here, Eleanor?" Arthur Thorne’s voice boomed from the back of the room. The grandfather walked forward, his cane thumping heavily. He looked furious. "You have no place in this home. You gave up that right twenty years ago."
"I have a right to see my son’s 'Fated Love,'" Eleanor said, her eyes finally landing on Aries. She scanned Aries from head to toe, a small, cruel smile touching her lips. "So, this is the one. Tell me, dear... how much did they pay you to stay with a man who has no heart?"
Aries felt Julian’s hand tremble. He was usually so strong, so untouchable, but right now he looked shattered.
The "Shield" in Aries woke up. She didn't think about the cameras or the contract. She only thought about the man standing next to her who was hurting.
Aries stepped forward, placing herself between Julian and his mother. She took Julian’s hand and laced her fingers through his, squeezing tight.
"Actually, Eleanor," Aries said, her voice clear and firm, "Julian has a bigger heart than anyone I know. And I wasn't paid to stay. I’m here because I want to be. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have a party to host. You’re welcome to stay for a drink, but if you’re only here to cause pain, I’ll have my brother show you to the door."
Ethan stepped up behind Aries, crossing his arms and looking like a mountain. "And I’ve been looking for an excuse to use my 'hospitality' skills," he added with a grin.
The Internal Shift
Julian looked down at Aries. He saw the fire in her eyes, the way she was standing up to the woman who had broken his spirit years ago. He felt a wave of gratitude so strong it nearly brought him to his knees.
She's protecting me, he thought. She doesn't even know the whole story, but she’s standing in the fire for me.
Eleanor’s smile faltered. She hadn't expected the "contract bride" to have teeth. She looked at Julian, then back at Aries, and let out a cold laugh. "Well. This might be more interesting than I thought."
The Cliffhanger
As the party continued, the tension was at an all-time high. Julian’s mother stayed, moving through the crowd like a ghost, whispering to the board members.
But Aries noticed something. Every time Eleanor whispered to someone, they looked at Julian with pity or doubt.
"Julian," Aries whispered, pulling him into a quiet corner near the balcony. "Why is she really here? It’s not just to see us, is it?"
Julian looked out at the city, his face pale. "She wants her share of the company, Aries. She knows about the contract. She’s here to prove our marriage is a lie so she can sue my grandfather for the inheritance."
Aries felt a chill. "How does she know about the contract?"
Julian looked at her, his eyes full of pain. "Because Natasha called her."
The "Fated Love" party was no longer just a celebration. It was a courtroom, and the trial of their lives was just beginning.
