THE MORNING AFTER THE MASK

Chapter 12: The Morning After the Mask The silence of the penthouse at 3:00 AM was no longer the cold, empty silence of a contract. It was a heavy, vibrating quiet that felt like the air right after a lightning strike. Julian stood alone on the balcony long after Aries had retreated to her room. The city of New York stretched out before him, a sea of lights that usually made him feel like the king of the world. But tonight, he felt just like a man who had finally stepped off a cliff and realized he didn't want to fly—he just wanted to land somewhere safe. He touched his lips, the phantom heat of Aries’ kiss still burning there. He had kissed many women in his life—usually women like Natasha, who treated a kiss like a transaction or a way to get closer to his bank account. But Aries… Aries had kissed him like she was trying to save his soul. And for the first time in thirty years, Julian Thorne didn't want to be a CEO. He wanted to be the man she thought he was. “I wasn't performing,” he had told her. The words had felt like a confession. Now, the fear was setting in. What happens to a "Golden Handcuffs" marriage when the keys are thrown away? The Kitchen Stand-off The next morning, the sun was far too bright for the level of emotional chaos inside the apartment. Aries emerged from her wing dressed in an oversized sweater and leggings, her hair in a messy bun. She was trying to look "normal," but her heart was hammering against her ribs so hard she was sure the neighbors could hear it. She walked into the kitchen and froze. Julian was there. He wasn't in his suit yet. He was wearing a simple black T-shirt and grey lounge pants, his hair slightly tousled. He was staring at the coffee machine as if it held the secrets to the universe. "Good morning," he said, his voice deeper and raspier than usual. "Morning," Aries replied, her voice barely a whisper. She moved toward the fridge, carefully keeping a five-foot "safety zone" between them. The air was so thick with awkwardness you could have cut it with a steak knife. Neither of them knew how to bridge the gap between the "Real Kiss" of last night and the "Contract Life" of this morning. "About last night—" Julian started, turning toward her. "Julian, please," Aries interrupted, clutching a carton of orange juice like a shield. "Last night was… a lot. My mother-in-law showed up, the board was watching, and we had to do what we had to do. Let’s just focus on the fact that she’s gone." Julian’s face tightened. He took a step toward her, closing the gap. "Aries, I told you on the balcony. I wasn't acting. Don't try to hide behind the contract again. You felt it too." Aries looked up at him, her eyes wide and honest. "I did feel it, Julian. That’s why I’m scared. If we lose our heads now, what happens when the next storm hits? I can’t be just another woman who fell for a billionaire because he was nice to her once." Julian opened his mouth to argue, but a loud, rhythmic thudding saved them—or ruined the moment, depending on how you looked at it. Ethan’s Detective Agency Ethan swung into the kitchen, wearing a neon-green gym shirt and carrying a gallon of water. He stopped, looking between Julian and Aries with a smirk that could only be described as "trouble." "Well, well, well," Ethan boomed, his voice echoing off the marble walls. "The lovebirds are awake. I’ve got to say, Thorne, for a guy who acts like a robot, you’ve got some serious 'main character' energy when it comes to the romance department. That kiss was a ten. My phone was blowing up all night with people asking if it was real." "Ethan, not now," Aries groaned, hiding her red face in her hands. "What? I'm just stating facts!" Ethan sat on the island and started peeling a banana. "But seriously, Julian. Your mom? She’s a piece of work. She stayed at the hotel down the street, by the way. My buddy who works security there saw her checking in with a guy who looked like a lawyer. A mean one." The romantic tension vanished, replaced by the cold reality of the Thorne family war. Julian’s expression shifted back into CEO mode. "She’s going to contest the trust. She wants to prove the marriage is a sham so she can claim the 20% of the company that my grandfather locked away for 'the heir and his spouse'." "So," Ethan said, pointing his banana at Julian. "If you guys don't look like the happiest couple in the history of happy couples, she takes a billion dollars and walks away. Sounds like you two need a real hobby. Like... a honeymoon?" Julian and Aries spoke at the exact same time: "No." "Absolutely not." The Surprise in the Mail The conversation was interrupted by the chime of the penthouse elevator. A courier in a crisp uniform stepped out, holding a large, flat box wrapped in silver paper. "Delivery for Mrs. Thorne," the courier said. Julian frowned, stepping forward to take the package. He checked it for a return address. "There isn't one. Just a note." Aries walked over and opened the small envelope attached to the silver ribbon. Her face went pale as she read the words. “A kiss is a beautiful lie, Aries. But a secret is a permanent truth. I hope you told your husband about the 'London Incident' before you played the part of the perfect wife. See you soon. – E.” Aries dropped the note. It fluttered onto the floor like a dead leaf. "The London Incident?" Julian asked, his voice low and dangerous. He picked up the note, his eyes scanning the elegant, sharp handwriting. He knew that script everywhere. It was his mother’s. Julian looked at Aries, his heart sinking. "Aries? What happened in London?" Aries felt the floor tilting beneath her. She had been so focused on Theo and the blackmail video that she had completely forgotten about the summer she spent in London three years ago. It wasn't a romance. It wasn't a crime. But it was a secret that could destroy her father’s company if it ever came out. "It’s not what you think," Aries whispered, her eyes darting to Ethan, who was looking confused and worried. "Then tell me what it is," Julian said. The warmth of the morning was gone. The "Ice CEO" was back, but this time, he wasn't just cold—he was hurt. "We just spent all night proving we trust each other. Was that a lie too?" "Julian, I—" The package on the table seemed to pulse with a dark energy. Aries reached out with shaking fingers and tore the silver paper. Inside was a framed photograph. It wasn't her and a man. It was a photo of her father, looking thin and desperate, shaking hands with a man the whole business world knew was a criminal—a man who had almost brought down the Thorne Group years ago. The note on the back of the photo read: “Your father didn't just need Julian’s money to save his business. He needed Julian’s protection to hide his crimes. Does the 'Hero' know he’s married to the daughter of a traitor?” The New Battlefield The silence in the kitchen was now deafening. Ethan stood up, his protective instincts flaring. "That’s a lie! My dad is a good man!" But Aries couldn't speak. She knew that her father had made a mistake in London. She knew he had been desperate. And she knew what would happen if Julian found out her family had a history with his greatest business enemies. Julian looked at the photo, then at Aries. His world was crumbling. He had just started to let her in, and now he found out that her father might be the reason his family had suffered a decade ago. "Aries," Julian said, his voice cold enough to freeze the air. "Is this why you agreed to the marriage? Not to save the company, but to hide your father’s tracks?" "No, Julian! I didn't even know about the photo until now!" "But you knew about London," Julian stated. It wasn't a question. Aries lowered her head. "Yes. I knew." Julian turned and walked toward his office, his footsteps echoing like thunder. "Ethan, take your sister to her wing. I need to call my lawyers. And don't either of you think about leaving this penthouse." The "Glass Cage" had just become a prison again. The Thought Dive: Aries’ Internal Pain Aries sat on the floor of her room, her back against the door. I finally kissed him, she sobbed silently. I finally felt like I belonged somewhere. And now, my past is the weapon my mother-in-law is using to kill the only good thing I have. "Fated Love" wasn't just about Julian learning to love. It was about her learning that she couldn't protect everyone by herself. But would Julian ever give her the chance to explain?
