DUST DOCUMENTS AND DARK CORNERS

Chapter 14: Dust, Documents, and Dark Corners The ride to the "Safe-Keep Storage" facility was anything but smooth. Instead of a sleek Thorne limousine, the trio was piled into Ethan’s old, rumbling pickup truck. Ethan insisted on driving, claiming he knew the "back alleys" to avoid any of Eleanor’s spies. Julian sat in the passenger seat, his knees almost hitting the dashboard, looking like a king forced to sit on a plastic throne. Aries was squeezed in the middle, feeling the warmth of Julian’s shoulder on one side and Ethan’s energetic gear-shifting on the other. "Can this vehicle go any faster?" Julian asked, gripping the door handle as the truck bounced over a pothole. "I feel like I’m in a blender." "Relax, Princess," Ethan chuckled, swerving slightly. "This truck has character. It doesn't need fancy sensors to tell me I’m hitting a curb—I can feel it in my teeth!" Aries looked at Julian, expecting him to snap, but she caught a flicker of a smile on his face. He was frustrated, yes, but for the first time in his life, he wasn't in control, and a small part of him seemed to find it... liberating. The Rusted Gates They arrived at a desolate part of the industrial district. The storage facility looked like it hadn't been painted since the 1990s. The gate was a heavy, rusted iron beast that required a physical key and a lot of muscle. "Stay in the truck," Julian commanded, his CEO instincts returning. "I’ll check the perimeter." "Oh, please," Ethan said, jumping out with a flashlight. "I’m the one with the boots, Thorne. You’ll ruin those five-thousand-dollar shoes in the mud." Aries followed them out, the cold night air biting at her neck. They reached Unit 402. As Aries turned the key, the heavy metal door groaned open, revealing a mountain of cardboard boxes, old furniture, and a thick layer of history. The Search Begins "We’re looking for a blue folder," Aries whispered, her voice echoing in the small space. "My father said he kept the London receipts in a folder marked 'Blueberry Pie' so no one would think it was important." For the next hour, the three of them tore through the unit. It was a comedy of errors. * Ethan found an old box of Aries’ childhood toys and spent ten minutes trying to make a broken robot talk. * Julian found a box of old tax returns and started criticizing the filing system. * Aries found a photo of her father from the London trip, looking tired but honest. Suddenly, Ethan let out a shout. "Found it! 'Blueberry Pie'!" He pulled a dusty blue folder from the bottom of a heavy crate. But as he pulled, the stack of boxes above him shifted. "Look out!" Julian yelled, lunging forward. Julian pushed Aries out of the way, but in the chaos, the boxes tumbled down. Ethan, trying to save the folder, tripped backward into a large, empty wooden wardrobe that was standing open. The door slammed shut behind him, and a heavy shelf fell across the front of it, locking him inside. "Hey! Let me out! It smells like mothballs in here!" Ethan’s muffled voice yelled from inside the wardrobe. The Forced Honesty Julian and Aries rushed to the wardrobe, but the shelf was wedged tight against the door. "I can’t move it alone," Julian panted, his face flushed from the effort. "The angle is wrong. I need to find a crowbar or something heavy to lever it off." "Julian, hurry! He’s claustrophobic!" Aries cried. "I’m fine!" Ethan yelled from inside. "Just... take your time! Actually, don't take your time! But hey, while I’m stuck, you two should probably talk! I can’t hear anything over the sound of my own heart beating!" (He was lying—he was definitely listening). Julian stopped and looked at Aries. The storage unit was dim, lit only by a single hanging bulb. The silence between them, underscored by Ethan’s occasional thumping, grew heavy. "Aries," Julian said softly. "Last night... and the photo today... I realized something." Aries looked up, her eyes shimmering. "What?" "I’ve spent my whole life looking for 'traitors' because that’s what my mother taught me to do," Julian admitted, stepping closer. "But when I saw that photo, my first instinct wasn't to protect the company. It was to protect you. I didn't want you to be the daughter of a man like that because I knew it would break your heart. I wasn't thinking about the money." Aries felt a tear slip down her cheek. "My father isn't a traitor, Julian. He was just a man who loved his family too much to let them see him fail." Julian reached out, his thumb catching the tear. "I know that now. Because I’m starting to understand what it feels like... to want to protect someone more than your own reputation." The Discovery Just as the moment turned truly romantic, a loud CRACK came from the blue folder, which had fallen to the floor. A small, encrypted USB drive had been taped to the inside cover. Aries picked it up. "This is it. The digital logs. This will prove who actually authorized the London codes." At that exact moment, the sound of a car engine idling outside reached their ears. A set of headlights swept across the unit door. "We aren't alone," Julian whispered, his eyes narrowing. "Is it the security guard?" Aries asked. "No," Julian replied, pulling her behind him. "The security guard doesn't drive a black Mercedes." From inside the wardrobe, Ethan stopped thumping. "Guys? Is the 'scary music' starting? Because I’m ready to burst out of this thing like a superhero if you can just move that shelf!" The Cliffhanger A figure stepped into the light of the storage unit door. It wasn't Marcus, and it wasn't Eleanor. It was a man Aries recognized immediately—her father’s former business partner from London, the man everyone thought had disappeared years ago. "I'll take that drive, Aries," the man said, holding a very expensive-looking silenced pistol. "Some secrets are better left buried in the dust."
