Chapter 4: Betrayal in the Dark

1009 Words
The howl lingered in Emma’s ears, a chilling promise that tightened the locket’s pulse against her chest. Ethan’s hand lingered on her shoulder, his warmth a stark contrast to the cold dread pooling in her gut. The note—“The human dies. The pack falls. Give her to us, or we take everything”—lay crumpled on the training room floor, its words burning into her mind. “We can’t stay here,” Ethan said, his voice steady but edged with urgency. His shoulder, still streaked with dried blood, tensed as he scanned the window. “They’re testing our defenses.” Emma pulled free, her defiance flaring. “And you think I’m the weak link? I didn’t ask for this war.” The locket’s warmth surged, a reminder of the power she’d unleashed—accidental, unstable, and terrifying. “You’re not weak,” he said, meeting her gaze. “You’re the key. That’s why they want you.” His green eyes softened, the bond humming between them, pulling at her resolve. She hated how it steadied her, how his presence made her want to trust him. Lila stormed in, her leather jacket smeared with dirt. “Perimeter’s holding, but they’re circling. Smells like a diversion.” Her eyes flicked to Emma, narrow and accusing. “If she’s the target, why not hand her over and be done?” “Enough, Lila,” Ethan snapped, but the tension between them crackled. Emma stepped back, the air thick with unspoken rivalry. A crash shattered the silence—glass exploding from the east window. Two rogues leapt through, claws raking the floor, their amber eyes fixed on Emma. The pack surged forward, but Ethan shoved her behind him, shifting into his midnight wolf form. His roar shook the room as he met the first rogue, teeth clashing in a blur of fur and fury. Emma’s heart raced, the locket burning. She stumbled, hand brushing a fallen knife from the training rack. Instinct took over—she thrust it forward, and the same shimmering energy erupted, knocking a rogue into the wall. It yelped, stunned, and Lila finished it with a swift bite. Ethan reverted, breathing hard, blood trickling from a new gash on his arm. “You’re learning,” he said, a rare grin breaking through. But his eyes darted to the window—more shadows moved. “I didn’t sign up for this,” Emma muttered, dropping the knife. Her hands shook, the power leaving her drained. “You don’t have to,” a new voice cut in—soft, hesitant. The scarred man from before, his shirt still stained, lingered near the door. “Maybe Lila’s right. Giving her up could save us.” Ethan’s growl silenced the room. “Traitor talk ends now, Jace. Get out.” Jace paled but retreated, his glance at Emma lingering too long. She frowned, unease settling deeper. Was he the leak? “We need to move,” Ethan said, pulling her toward a back exit. “The pack house isn’t safe.” They slipped into the night, the estate’s grounds a maze of trees and shadows. The pack followed, silent as ghosts, but Emma felt eyes on her—more than the rogues. Ethan led her to a hidden bunker, its steel door creaking open. Inside, the air was cool, the walls lined with maps and weapons. “Training starts for real,” he said, handing her a staff. “You need control.” “I don’t even know what I’m doing,” she protested, but he moved, testing her. She blocked, awkward but determined, the locket’s warmth guiding her swings. Sweat beaded her brow, and after a dozen strikes, she held her own—barely. “You’re stronger than you think,” he said, stepping close. His breath brushed her cheek, the bond flaring. Her pulse quickened, and she hated how his nearness unraveled her defenses. “Don’t,” she whispered, stepping back. “This bond—it’s not me choosing.” “It will be,” he said, voice low. “When you’re ready.” Before she could retort, a shout echoed outside. The bunker door rattled, and Jace burst in, panic-stricken. “They’re here—ten of them! The east gate’s down!” Ethan cursed, grabbing a sword. “Stay behind me,” he ordered, but Emma gripped the staff, her resolve hardening. “Not this time.” They emerged to chaos. Rogues swarmed the grounds, clashing with the pack. Lila led a counterattack, her wolf form a blur, but a rogue broke through, aiming for Emma. She swung the staff, energy flaring, and sent it sprawling. Ethan fought beside her, their movements syncing in a rhythm she couldn’t explain. Then she saw it—Jace, slipping toward the trees, a small device in his hand. A signal? Her stomach dropped. “Ethan, he’s—” A rogue tackled her, knocking the staff free. Claws raked her arm, pain searing, but Ethan’s roar saved her, pinning the beast. Blood dripped from her wound, the locket pulsing wildly. She staggered up, energy surging—she pushed it out, a wave that scattered the nearest rogues. The pack rallied, driving the invaders back, but Jace was gone. Ethan pulled her close, checking her arm. “You’re hurt,” he said, voice rough with worry. “I’m fine,” she lied, the bond’s pull overwhelming. His touch soothed the pain, and she cursed herself for leaning into it. Lila approached, bloodied but triumphant. “They’re retreating. But Jace—he ran east. Traitor’s confirmed.” Ethan’s face darkened. “We’ll deal with him. But you—” he turned to Emma, “—you’re one of us now.” “I’m not,” she said, pulling away, but the locket’s glow intensified, and a figure emerged from the shadows—a rival alpha, tall and scarred, his eyes locked on her. “The human’s mine,” he growled, and the night erupted with howls. Emma’s breath caught. The fight wasn’t over.
