Chapter 6: Shadows of Command The carved message—“Next time, she dies. The pack with her”—haunted Emma as she stood by the fire, the locket’s pulse a steady drum against her chest. Ethan’s sword gleamed in the dim light, his jaw set with grim determination as the pack rallied around him. Outside, Kade’s glowing eyes and the towering shadow beside him promised a fight unlike any before. Ethan turned to her, his voice low but firm. “Stay close this time. Your power’s our edge.” His hand brushed her arm, the bond flaring, and she nodded despite the dread coiling in her gut. The attack came at dawn, a cacophony of howls splitting the silence. Rogues poured through the east gate, led by Kade and the new figure—a woman, tall and regal, her silver hair cascading like moonlight, her eyes a piercing violet. She moved with an otherworldly grace, her presence commanding the rogues with a mere gesture, and Emma’s locket burned hotter than ever. “Stay back!” Ethan shouted, shifting into his midnight wolf form as he charged Kade. The pack followed, claws and teeth meeting fur, but the silver-haired woman raised a hand, and the air thickened with an unseen force, halting the pack mid-stride. Emma gripped her staff, the energy surging within her. She stepped forward, ignoring Ethan’s growl, and thrust her hands out—the wave of power shattered the woman’s hold, freeing the pack. The woman’s violet eyes narrowed, a smirk playing on her lips. “Interesting,” she murmured, her voice like velvet over steel. The battle raged, a chaotic dance of fur and blood. Ethan clashed with Kade, their alpha strength shaking the ground, while Lila tore through rogues with relentless fury. Emma swung her staff, her energy flaring with each strike, knocking back attackers with growing precision. The locket guided her, its warmth a steady pulse, and she felt the power deepen, a connection to something ancient. The silver-haired woman glided toward her, unaffected by the chaos. “You’re the key,” she said, circling Emma like a predator. “Your blood will break the packs—or unite them. Choose wisely.” “I don’t choose anything,” Emma snapped, swinging the staff. The woman deflected it with a flick of her wrist, her power a cold counter to Emma’s heat. Ethan broke free, lunging at the woman, but she vanished, reappearing behind him, her hand grazing his neck with a dark energy that made him stagger. “Ethan!” Emma cried, her fear fueling a brighter surge. She pushed the energy out, a blinding light that forced the woman back, giving Ethan time to recover. He reverted, panting, blood streaking his side. “Who is she?” Emma demanded. “The seer,” he gasped. “Kade’s ally. She sees the prophecy—and twists it.” The fight shifted as the pack gained ground, driving the rogues back. Emma’s arms ached, her power waning, but she held her stance, the locket’s glow a beacon. Jace, bound in the corner, watched with wide eyes, his betrayal now a silent confession. The seer’s violet gaze flicked to him, and a smirk curled her lips. “You’ve served well, Jace,” she called, her voice carrying over the din. “Your signal brought us here. The pack’s end is near.” Emma’s stomach dropped. She turned to Ethan, who glared at Jace with a fury that could kill. “You signaled them?” he roared, striding toward the traitor. Jace shrank back, trembling. “She promised me freedom! Power! I didn’t know she’d—” His words cut off as Ethan’s fist connected, knocking him out cold. The pack murmured, their trust shattered. The seer laughed, a sound that chilled Emma’s bones. “Your pack crumbles from within, Blackwood. Give me the girl, and I’ll spare the rest.” Her hand extended, dark energy coiling around her fingers. “Never,” Ethan snarled, stepping in front. Emma’s heart pounded, the bond pulling her closer to him. She couldn’t let him die for her—not like this. Emma acted, her power flaring as she joined Ethan. Together, they faced the seer, their energies clashing in a brilliant display. The locket burned, its wolf etching pulsing, and Emma felt Ethan’s strength bolster her own—the bond amplifying her power. The seer staggered, her dark energy faltering, but she smiled, unperturbed. “You can’t win,” the seer said, vanishing in a swirl of shadow. The rogues retreated, Kade limping after her, but the damage was done—wounded pack members groaned, and Jace lay unconscious, his treachery exposed. Ethan pulled Emma into his arms, his breath ragged. “You’re incredible,” he murmured, his hand cupping her face. The bond surged, warm and undeniable, and she leaned into him, her defenses crumbling. His lips brushed her forehead, a tentative claim, and she didn’t pull away. “We need to talk,” she whispered, her voice shaky. He nodded, leading her inside as the pack tended the fallen. In the study, the fire crackled, casting shadows on the wolf carvings. Ethan cleaned his wounds, his shirt discarded, revealing scars that told stories of past battles. Emma sat across, the staff in her lap, her mind racing. “The seer—she knows the prophecy,” she said. “What does it say?” Ethan sighed, meeting her gaze. “A human mate will unite the packs—or destroy them. Your bloodline, tied to that locket, holds the balance. The seer wants to twist it for her gain.” Emma twirled the locket, its warmth fading. “And you think I’m that mate?” “I know you are,” he said, stepping closer. “The bond proves it. But it’s your choice, Emma. I won’t force you.” Her heart thudded, the pull irresistible. She wanted to trust him, to let the bond guide her, but fear held her back. Before she could respond, a crash sounded outside—glass shattering, followed by a scream. Ethan grabbed his sword, pulling her up. They rushed to the window, and Emma’s breath caught. The seer stood in the courtyard, Kade beside her, and a dozen new rogues at their heels. But it was the figure behind them—a towering man, his presence darker than the seer’s, his eyes a void—that froze her. He raised a hand, and the pack house trembled, stones cracking. “The true alpha comes,” the seer intoned, her voice echoing. “Surrender her, or all falls.” Emma gripped Ethan’s arm, the locket pulsing wildly. The fight had just begun.
