A new beginning

Standing outside the university administration office Mia breathed a deep breath. She had just finished her registration input and application for a student loan. Now she just had one important errand left on her to-do list the job hunt. Since she had a limited experience and being from a foreign country it was a tough journey that awaited her.

In the late afternoon Mia flopped down on the nearest seat and let out a frustrated huff. After another day of 'no sorry' she was close to tears. It has been a week of endless job hunting to no avail."Again! " Sophie's exasperated voice came from the luxurious couch opposite her. With a tired nod Mia confirmed her friend's exclamation. The stress was evident on Mia's face and body. Mia has had little to eat this whole week and it was showing on her.

Emma who was busy in the kitchen looked over at her thinning friend and could not help but feeling pained for her. Finishing dinner she couldn't stop her mind from wondering how she would help in her friend's mission. To offer her money wouldn't help since she already heard Mia wouldn't except any more charity from her. Setting the table the idea struck her, she'll ask her ex lover and good friend Jason to see if he could find her friend a decent job.

Sitting down against her will Mia started to eat. Though not much hungry she ate and engaged in conversation trying to get her mind of her troubles. Sophie told her about her day and the hilarious customers she had. Mia laughed at Sophie 's expressions and gestures while she told her endless tales and jokes.Emma looked as if she enjoyed these tales too and would shortly let out gasps and giggles. When her phone rang and she excused herself. "Well that seems serious. She never answers her phone at dinner."Sophie said as she finished stacking the dishes and began to carry them to the kitchen. Taking the cups Mia followed her friend.

In the kitchen Sophie packed the dirty dishes in the dishwasher and Mia started the coffeemaker and lined up their cups. Turning to her friend she couldn't conceal the tremble in her voice as she asked if she had any ideas as to where to start the next days job search. "I'm not sure Mia. I didn't have to struggle as you do. First place I put in my application offered me the job. I guess I was lucky." Sophie said with a shaking head. Leaning against the countertop Mia sighed and prayed for her luck to change.

With a skip in her step Emma walked back to the living area where her friends was in light conversation and enjoy their coffee. Smiling at them as she entered and sat down and excepting her coffee from Mia. Jason had just contacted her with news that he might be able to help Mia with a job. "Mia you know I love you right?" She asked acting dramatic.

Looking at her friend's serious face Mia nodded slowly at the odd question. "And you know that whenever I do something over the top for you it's to show you how much I appreciate your friendship. Right?"Emma's words came again making Mia's smile fall to a grim line. She had obviously done something to make her say that and whatever it was it seemed Emma apologizing for it. A shiver ran through her like she was struck by lightening. She was really to tired for another big Emma-surprise."What did you do? " Came her and Sophie's query at once as they looked at one another with white faces.

Emma's giggles came right after thier question left thier mouths making them look at her in confusion. "Why do always assume I did something bad?"Emma said trying to control her giggles. Even Emma had to admit she could be outlandish sometimes and even surprised herself at how normal her gift to Mia actually is. It wasn't over the top or could push her family closer to bankruptcy , it was just a case of asking for a favor." Well what did you do?" Mia ask impatient to know what was in store for her.

With a smile Emma couldn't keep the dramatic silence anymore. "Okay , I'll tell you. I know you're struggling with the job finding so I kind of rented you a hand." Emma declared and Mia got another chill." What did you do?" It came for Sophie this time." Well I wanted to help and I know you would bite me if I gave you the money you'll need. So I made a call to a friend and you got a job interview tomorrow. I'm pretty sure you'll get it." Emma revealed excitedly.

Mia's face lit up at her friend's announcement , but had to wander what her friend had to do to ensure her a job. "What did it cost you?" Mia couldn't stop herself from asking. Another smile appeared on Emma's face at it." You're quite cynical aren't you. It cost a date with a guy I really like. Don't worry I won't do anything over the top without telling you first." She told them and they both let out a obviously fake exasperated and asked if she was sick.

Relieved that she might have a job from tomorrow, Mia felt the air become easy.The three girls filled the night fall with excited chatter about Mia's could-be job or as Emma so confidently put it Mia's permanent employment for her better future.
