Watch Me!

731 Words
Aria's POV Damien’s eyebrows shot up involuntarily, his nose flaring open as he held his breath. I could tell that he felt deeply insulted by the words I had just allowed to roll out of my tongue. His eyes bore into mine with an intensity that had me in a choke hold. “I’m not in any way surprised by your shitty attitude,” I continued, keeping my voice dense and steady, “I was forewarned about it all, but what disappoints me is that you couldn’t prove them wrong for even a minute.” Damien glanced around the room, checking the expression on the faces of the bodyguards and Mrs. Thompson, probably wanting to know if they were also seeing the madness I had on display to dare challenge him. Their faces were tense and frozen. He darted his eyes back at me, his gaze colder than ever. “So you believe I’m arrogant?” Without wasting a response from me, twitching his nose in disdain, “Who the hell do you think you are to judge or dare challenge me?” he asked. Before I could respond again, Mrs. Thompson swiftly swung in to intervene, pulling me back. “Sorry Mr. Smith, ignore her defiant words, I haven't fully enlightened Aria about office ethics yet”. She chipped in. “That is no excuse for her rudeness,” he retorted sharply. “She ought to be more sensible.” He took a step closer to me and halted just an inch away from me. His hit breath grazed my skin, making my heart double the pace at which it rose. “Mrs. Thompson," he called. “Yes,” Mrs. Thompson answered with a voice tinged with panic. “I want to see you in my office now!” he barked without breaking eye contact with me, which had allowed me to get lost in his blue, fiery eyes. With that being said, he walked away with Mrs. Thompson trailing behind him, my heart pounded vehemently behind my chest as I watched them leave. I began pacing restlessly around once they had both disappeared into his office, face dripping down my face and soaking the fabric underneath my armpits. I knew they were discussing my fate, and the uncertainty of what was being said terrified me. After what felt like an eternity, Mrs. Thompson emerged from Damien’s office with him coming right after her. Fixing a steely gaze on me, “I’ll be patient to wait and see how long you will be able to keep up with this tough act of yours before you break and flee after I snap your bones,” he said sternly. His words were meant to intimidate me, but I refused to back down. The drama was just starting, and I was fully ready at this point to see it to the end. “Watch me!” I retorted sarcastically, holding his gaze with so much confidence. With a final glare at me, Damien turned and went back into his office without saying any more words to me. Mrs. Thompson went on to help me settle into the work for the day before she left, taking the bodyguards along with her. More than ever, I was determined to prove myself to not just my little angel and my mum, but now to my d**k-headed boss, who would probably not think twice before he fires me at the slightest of it. I was so engrossed in the work, Mrs. Thompson had laid out for me for the day that I did not notice someone entering the office until I heard a deep, masculine voice. “Hello, you must be the new assistant, right?” I looked up from the screen on my computer to see who it was, and my heart nearly stopped. It was Nate. Again. I pushed my chair backward forcefully with the shock that instantly surged through me, and banged my head against the wall behind me. With the way, my heart had been stopping and racing these past few hours. I could tell I was not far from getting a cardiac arrest. “Are you okay?” Nate rushed over, concern etched on his face. Before I could answer, Damien’s office door flew open, “Brother!” Damien called out, his voice surprisingly warm. “Brother?” My head echoed.
