Joanna Malicka speaks to the families of some of the highest profile cases of missing people in Poland.
“All that remained of him were the photos and the spreading emptiness in our little flat,” says Marta Gierska, the mother of Roman, who went missing at the Legia stadium aged 11. She considers herself one of the lucky minority of parents whose children were found, despite being registered as missing for more than 18 months.
Every year, there are over 15,000 cases of missing people across Poland. Common reasons for disappearance are physical or mental illness, reactions to domestic or work-related pressures and a*******n. Around a third of cases are linked to some form of criminal activity.
