CHAPTER 35 – MATTY LONDONHe left the tube at Upton Park Station and made his way slowly down the road between the market stalls and the old council estate. As he neared the West Ham football stadium, a sudden memory came to him of buying football shirts with Dan from a garden vendor. They were still there – the funny, rickety stalls set up in people’s front gardens. He wondered whether these businesses were legal or whether the seemingly relaxed men manning the stands had a plan of action in place in case the police came snooping. He recalled watching a TV documentary in which an illegal street seller of ripped DVDs suddenly covered his stand with a thick plastic sheet onto which he’d pinned old clothes pretending that he was setting up an impromptu jumble sale.
