CHAPTER 16 – JOANNA WARSAWIt was a quiet Sunday. Joanna imagined that few people bothered to go out into the drizzle, if they didn’t absolutely have to. The start of summer had brought with it an unseasonable amount of rain and the capital’s inhabitants were desperate for a bit of sunshine. She’d decided to take the tram to Ochota – it was quicker than driving and it gave her the opportunity to scribble down some notes for the article. As she descended the steps at her stop, a glimmer of blue sky greeted her. The rain had stopped and she had a sudden urge to walk past her old flat. She’d deliberately avoided this part of the city since her mother had moved out, as it had always generated intense emotions, a mixture of nerves, sadness and loss.
