CHAPTER 20 – MATTY
LONDONThey surfaced from the subterranean depths onto a busy road in Hackney and Matty surveyed his surroundings with no recognition. He hadn’t even an inkling of an idea about which way they should turn. Sweat broke out on the palms of his hands, and he wiped them quickly on the backs of his jeans.
Ellie had come with him, as he’d asked her to, and he felt suddenly awful for bestowing his burden on her. She hadn’t deserved it, particularly considering the way he’d behaved over the past few days. He’d openly avoided her by spending every waking moment in the office, even after everybody had left and he genuinely had no more work left to do. Then he’d hurriedly muttered a few sentences to her before bed, mainly about how tired he was, and turned around to face the wall,
